Thursday Next
I thought everything that was wrong with Other M, gameplay and otherwise, was all the fault of Sakamoto. It's interesting, this isn't the first I've seen this mentality. There are those who would be THRILLED if Smash Brothers was taken away from it's progenitor so Sakurai would stop "ruining the franchise". And yes, a lot of the things that people didn't like in Metroid Other M came directly from Mr. Sakamoto, also known as the guy who made metroid. I tend to be unsympathetic to such views. Regardless of what product comes from it, I wish I lived in a world where games could be a reflection of individuals, and if those individuals change or were never happy with what everyone else thought of as a "masterpiece" then they should keep chasing that original muse. Better that these games release and are polarizing and reflect the auteurs who came up with them than that they get absorbed into the homogenized whole of Nintendo EAD. Sakamoto's only one third of Metroid though! There's still Satoru Okada (granted, he's stuck doing handheld stuff now) and Gunpei Yokoi (RIP!). I don't have a problem with the idea of a game being a reflection of an individual, but that also doesn't mean an individual should be immune to criticism or feedback from anyone else. If the rest of the team wanted to use the nunchaku in conjunction with the Wii remote while Sakamoto was needlessly adamant about 'the simplicity of only using the Wii remote', let the feedback from play testing speak for itself. Sometimes dumb ideas are just dumb and there's no excusing it. Based on the interviews floating around the interbutts, Sakamoto sounds like one of those guys who wants things his way and anyone who disagrees 'just doesn't understand his grand vision'. We all know how those guys tend to work out. One minor niggle, bit of a pet peeve but... It's called a Nunchuk™ not a nunchaku. http://www.nintendo.com/wii/what-is-wii/#/controls/nunchuk On topic. One of the problems with "artists" is that you have to take the bad with the good. They often have a unique vision now because they have been ignoring people telling them that X is wrong or Y won't work all their lives and every now and then they prove the critics wrong. It's a kind of gambler mentality. They remember the hits, they forget (or explain away) the flops and carry on with the same system till they get rich or go bankrupt. TCP
Interesting article courtesy of IGN. Or, Iwata, is the reason the deluxe sold better because people are not willing to buy a console with an 8 GB HD? Alternatively, because the only people who'd buy the Wii U at this point are hardcore Nintendo fans, they don't mind dropping the extra 50 dollars, but the reason no one else will buy either version is because they're both too expensive? You have next to no games in the horizon, and you're getting your butt handed to you buy 7 and 8 year old consoles. What are you going to do this time next year?
Thursday Next
It's crazy to launch hardware without a strong software line-up. If there is one thing that is true of all consoles it is that software sells hardware. Rehashing old games is not going to shift anything. The only people buying old ninty games are the hardcore, which happens to be the only people who are buying the Wii U. Lucky for nintendo margins on both hard and software for these are great. But that will only work for so long.
Mr. GOH!
Margins on unsold hardware and software are pretty shitty, even for Nintendo, though.
TheMightyEthan
Supposedly Nintendo is going to be releasing a Deluxe Wii U/Wind Waker HD bundle. Price is supposed to be $350, which is the same as the current Deluxe without a game, so that might actually help drive more sales than I initially thought Wind Waker would. Mr. GOH!
Tying the the sale of a currently struggling console to a game on a previous struggling console, eh? The Wii U will surely break all the sales records now!
TheMightyEthan
Including a game, any game, in with the console can only help its attractiveness.
Strangelove
I thought the Deluxe Bundle had Nintendoland...
TheMightyEthan
It does, I forgot. Still, while the Pikmin minigame is a lot of fun, Nintendoland's not something that's gonna hold your attention.
TCP
I played Nintendo Land for 20 minutes the day I got the Wii U. Has not been touched since. Not bad, just not great. ...KIND OF LIKE THE WII U! hahahaahhahahahahaaahahahaa
TheMightyEthan
Price cut for the Deluxe down to $299.
TCP
249 would be the sweet spot for this system. Wind Waker coming Sept 20 for eShop, October 4 retail. I'd be interested in getting the eShop version early but I'm way too hesitant to buy a 50 dollar game digitally from Nintendo.
Mr. GOH!
The Wind Waker remake is a $20 game Nintendo is selling for $50. The Wii U price drop is necessary. I expect Nintendo will focus on selling it to kids rather than adults, as that's its strongest audience.
TheMightyEthan
It's $50 on the eShop? It's $60 at retail.
TCP
It's 50 at retail. Edited August 28, 2013 by The Cowboy Poet
TheMightyEthan
Oh, huh, Amazon's still got it listed for $60 (it was originally $50 there, but everyone else had it at $60, and Amazon raised theirs to match).
UnstableArk
Gamestop also says $60, but both have their release dates for December 31. My guess is that they've yet to update.
Mister Jack
If they bundle the Wii U with a decent game at 299 at some point, I'll bite. I'd pay 299 for the console with a decent game or 250 for the console by itself. And Nintendoland does NOT count.
UnstableArk
Depends on if you find Wind Waker a decent game. That Zelda bundle is $300 as well. Also, both Amazon and Gamestop updated its page; Wind Waker is indeed $50...still hefty. Edited August 28, 2013 by UnstableArk
Mister Jack
Wind Waker is my least favorite Zelda game since the 3DO ones, so no, it doesn't convince me. But it does prove they're willing to do a 300 dollar bundle, so I'm hoping at some point they do another one with a game I would actually want. Like Smash Bros. Strangelove
Even $50 is a bit of a ripoff, though Im not counting the "Nintendo Premium". Since its first party, itll be full priced forever, so you might as well get it when it comes out since itll be years before you find it on sale anywhere. Though Ive noticed that pretty much doesnt exist on the Wii U. I was able to get a Mario game for $40 used. A game that came out last year. Thats fucking rough. TCP
A new Wii U update lets you play Wii games on your tablet controller. I tried it out last night... the good news is some of these Wii games look a lot better on the tablet screen than blown up on an HDTV. I tried out Xenoblade and actually didn't make me want to vomit. Though the unfortunate news is that even though games like Xenoblade use the classic controller, you can't play the game with the tablet controller. So if you're like me and you do your Vita/Wii U gaming in bed, you still have to have a Wii Remote, and in the case, a classic controller plugged into it. Virtual Console games also work, Majora's Mask looked pretty good, but again, I had the screen propped up so I could see it while laying down and had to use a separate controller. Oh Nintendo! TheMightyEthan
How does using the Wii Remote work on the tablet for games that actually use the pointer? Have you tried that?
