TCP
How does using the Wii Remote work on the tablet for games that actually use the pointer? Have you tried that? I haven't yet but apparently the little camera on top of the tablet functions as as the IR reader. I did use the Wii remote to browse the menu, but i'd have to move the tablet back a couple feet to get it to read. The annoying thing, and I don't know if this is because it was my first time using Wii mode since updating, but I had to turn the TV on, point at the TV and confirm going into the Wii mode, which means I'd have been out of luck if I didn't have access to the TV. Hopefully you don't have to do that every time. I can understand not being able to use the tablet's buttons/thumbsticks for games like Skyward Sword, but there's no reason classic controller games or games like New Super Mario Bros where you play with the Wii remote sideways can't work. Same with Virtual Console games, clearly they just want us to "upgrade" to the Wii U versions, which I'd be interested in doing if they put more than crappy NES games on the store. CorgiShinobi
Had no idea about all that stuff, but the obvious perk to me last night was when the Friend List actually got an icon on the Wii GamePad without going into the Home Menu. Not a big deal, but it was weird how all the other software/features had an icon, but then you had to access the Home Menu to add, or view, your Friends.
TCP
Who was it requesting DS games on the Wii U VC? Ethan? Sounds like an Ethan thing. Well, they're coming, according to Kotaku. Now, keep in mind, they said like.. two years ago, that GBA and N64 games are coming.. and we have yet to see either of those.
Mister Jack
My refurbished Wii U arrived today. I have to say, if there wasn't a big sticker on the box saying it's refurbished you would never know by looking at it. Everything about the system appears brand new when you open the box, and nothing I saw inside had so much as a scratch on it. The gamepad makes a slight rattling noise when you shake it which concerned me at first, but apparently this is just a thing that Wii U gamepads do so it's nothing out of the ordinary. I won't get much time to actually play with it for a while, but I've hooked it up to do the basic system setup and the Wii transfer and so far everything seems to be running just fine. Considering that I still have a year warranty, I would ultimately recommend this refurbished deal over the brand new bundle at 300 dollars. Even if you don't want Nintendo Land, you could buy another game separately and still save more money than you would by getting the store bundles. TCP
Welcome to the Wii U brotherhood, Jack. PICK UP NES REMIX 2!
TheFlyingGerbil
Some refurbs are completely unused customer returns, so it can just be a matter of getting lucky, which it looks like you have. I had the same luck with a rowing machine - it was very obvious it had never been assembled and I saved around half of the new price. Yay us! Also, while I'm here I want to say how much I love the new quick start feature - so good for a short burst of Mario Kart, LttP or popping in to the eShop. I've definitely thought before now I couldn't be bothered waiting for a console to start up if I'm not going in for a decent gaming session and this seems literally instant. So glad they've managed to improve the OS, it's at a level I'm happy with now so any further improvements would just be icing on the cake. P4: Gritty Reboot
I didn't experience the OS or UI at all right out of the box since I just got mine but it's been fantastic. It's very well done.
TheFlyingGerbil
The hours long out-of-the-box mandatory update to add basic functionality didn't exactly endear you to it, and while it probably wasn't any slower than the PS3 OS, it should have been a lot quicker being 6 years more modern. I still think in general use it could be faster, but it doesn't cause frustration like it did.
Mister Jack
Doing all the updates and setups and data transfers took FOREVER, but at least it's out of the way now and I can finally actually play the thing when I get home tonight. TheFlyingGerbil
What's the first thing you're going to play? edit: woohoo! You mentioning the transfer process reminded me that LostWinds wouldn't transfer over when I did it ages ago, so while a little annoyed I wrote it off at the time as a casualty of progress. I just did a quick search now. They fixed the problem in April this year and since I am so disorganised I haven't got around to selling my Wii yet so I can transfer it over now. Landed! Mister Jack
Boy I'm not even sure what to play. I have Mario Kart, Mario 3D World, and Wind Waker to choose from right off the bat. I'm super tempted to start 3D World but part of me wants to save it for when I have my friend over for co-op. Decisions decisions...
danielpholt
I've heard the Co-op isn't all its cracked up to be. Fun no doubt, but not the way someone that's trawling a gaming message board would want to play the game. I played it solo and loved it. Playing it with a friend would just lead to frustration, not dissimilar to how i felt about Rayman Legends.
TheMightyEthan
Actually I played it all the way through both solo and with my wife, and I didn't find it frustrating. NSMBU was frustrating as hell because you would interfere with each other constantly, but in SM3DW there's enough open space that you don't bother each other much. I do think the game shines best in singelplayer, but coop is not a tearing-your-hair-out nightmare like in NSMBU.
TCP
Does anyone want Kirby's Adventure for the Wii U VC? I have Club Nintendo coins about to expire and nothing to purchase with it, so I can send you the code, if you'd like.

Mister Jack
I'm thinking about looking into a replacement battery for the gamepad, since the one it comes with is complete ass. Anyone have any recommendations?
TheFlyingGerbil
I bought the official Nintendo one and would definitely recommend it. Since I bought it I've never had the battery run out on me when before it was a regular annoyance. Can't say anything about third party ones other than general experience I've had with this party stuff and that is that they are not generally worth the saving. Mister Jack
How many hours are we talking about with the official one? How long do you use it between charges?
TheFlyingGerbil
For once the official estimates for battery life are accurate. Easily over 5 hours. E.g. yesterday I watched 2 movies and then played link to the past and the charge was still in the blue zone whereas with the old battery it would sometimes die in the middle of watching a second film. I can't say for definite how long it lasts but to me that is high praise for it. It's at the point now where I really don't think about it. E.g previously when I watched films I'd leave it on the charging stand now I leave it on the table next to me. When I was going to play a 'big' game I used to move the charge cable over to the sofa so it would be ready now I can leave it plugged in on the other side of the room where the cradle is. deanb
It's really handy that the Gamepad even has room to fit in a bigger* officially produced battery. Amazing coincidence the battery slot is just slightly bigger than the inbuilt battery requires. *I say bigger. Physically it's bigger sure, but by phone has a higher battery capacity.
Mr. GOH!
Nintendo is comprised of cynical motherfuckers.
TCP
Good news everyone! Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the Metroid Prime Trilogy are coming to the Wii U! Bad news everyone! Neither of those games are playable on the gamepad so prepare yourself for finding a sensor bar, some AA batteries, a Wii Remote, and Nunchuk. Yay! Want to see these games in HD? Ha! Good luck! Also, while you can boot them from the Wii U menu, it still loads them up in Wii mode. Nintendo in 2015!
CorgiShinobi
Good thing the Wii U came with a sensor bar that's still plugged into my console. Not to mention that if you've been relatively housing a Nintendo console the last eight years, there's a good chance you have at least a single Wiimote with Nunchuk laying around. Probably has some crusty batteries installed in it, or maybe you got fancy and have one of those recharging devices from Nyko or Energizer. Just having Metroid Prime Trilogy and Punch-Out!! soon to be available is goods news. Those games are ridiculously expensive used given they went out of printed so many years ago. I should know because I bought Punch-Out!! off eBay over a year ago for a, as I remember, fair amount.
Mr. GOH!
Upgrade to Wii U or 3DS and you'll finally be able to play all the games you played to death when you were 10! Plus, buy some tacky plastic figures, you idiots love that shit, right? Nintendo is truly innovative. Edited January 14, 2015 by Mr. GOH!
