TheMightyEthan
lol, "because it's Nintendo" is the reason I'm not buying it at launch. I'll get one eventually, but for the same two reasons I got a Wii: Mario and Zelda.
TCP
There was a lot more on the Wii than just Mario and Zelda (though, those games were fantastic). I've mentioned it before, but I think they did a much better job supporting the Wii than they did with the GCN or N64 (except for, you know, 2011 and 2012!).
TheMightyEthan
The only other game on the Wii that I am even remotely interested in is Monster Hunter Tri. Part of it is that there are some games I would have liked except for their shitty controller (NSMBWii, for example).
TCP
NSMBWii works fine with the Wii Remote. Don't really get how you can call it a "shitty controller" since, it changed the entire industry. If you don't like it, that's fine, but you're really missing out on a lot of fantastic games.
Yantelope V2
Because it's Nintendo and I have the money. I'll probably get suckered into getting one because I always end up getting every console because every console has at least one game that I have to play. I wonder if I can get a friend to sell me his WiiU for $100 like I did with the original Wii...
TheMightyEthan
NSMBWii works fine with the Wii Remote. It hurts my hands to hold that thing sideways for more than about half an hour at a stretch. I enjoy the game, but I just cannot play it with that thing. I shouldn't call the controller shitty, it works great for some things. I really liked Skyward Sword, and I liked Twilight Princess better on the Wii than the Gamecube (because the pointer made aiming so much easier). What's shitty is how they feel the need to shoehorn in motion to every goddamn title, regardless of whether or not it adds anything. Motion control added nothing to NSMBWii, there is no reason that they couldn't have made that game compatible with the Classic Controller or Gamecube controller. TCP
I'll agree to that. Some games, that didn't NEED the Wii Remote, like NSMBW, could have used Classic Controller support.
TheFlyingGerbil
It hurts my hands to hold that thing sideways for more than about half an hour at a stretch. Did you try with the Nintendo Silicon gripper, it makes it a bit more chunky and easier to hold for some people. The reason I will probably get the WiiU at launch is because Nintendo have a habit of giving cool free stuff to early adopters. Plus it tends to be that launch bundles are best as all the retailers are competing with each other. The decent offers then tail off and then you start wanting to wait for a price drop. I'll also be buying it to support "core games" turning up on it, e.g. AC3 and Darksiders 2. I wonder if they'll have a trophy system. It would be quite cool if they linked that to the club Nintendo account and its rewards.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, the Wiimote Condom did make it better. Still didn't completely fix it though.
Thursday Next
Gonna give Wii U a wide berth. I've played Zelda and Mario enough times and the 3DS line up is not showing me much to get excited about Ninty generally. Their biggest games are largely 3D remakes of old games. It's a habit they got into with GameCube --> Wii that they haven't shaken off, which is a pity.

Just plug it in and you can play NSMB Wii that way. Edited March 6, 2012 by excel_excel
TheMightyEthan
I don't want to use the Nunchuk, I want a d-pad.
TheFlyingGerbil
So, what launch game(s)/console features would you guys need to make the WiiU a day one purchase? (assuming the price is reasonable) FWIW, all I need for a day one purchase is a release date. Short of a serious manufacturing fault being announced I can't imagine anything that would make me not want to buy it.

deanb
"Buy one PS4, get one Wii U free"? Apart from Pokemon, and that's only minor, I've never had an affinity for their games, re-releases and rehashes. I'm also not too fussed for their controller gimmicks either. Constantly learning new control schemes gets in the way of enjoying the game. I guess they'd need to be the only console in existence for me.
TheMightyEthan
Oh yeah, a full-fledged console Pokemon at launch would do it too. By "full-fledged" I mean big ass open world RPG, like the handheld ones. *Edit* - That will never ever happen though. *Edit 2* - Though depending on what kind of motion sensing is in that tablet they could potentially do a pretty cool sequel to Pokemon Snap with that thing. That obviously wouldn't be even close to enough to sell me on the console though.

P4: Gritty Reboot
I will buy a Wii U, given the price is reasonable, near launch. Nintendo hasn't failed to make their home consoles worth the money for me yet. They tend to be the perfect little companions to my more "hardcore" PC gaming.
FMW
What console features do I need? I dunno... I guess I'm not too choosy. If it turns out multiple tablets can't be connected at once or extra tablets are prohibitively expensive then that could be a problem for me. I love me my local multiplayer. If Nintendo doesn't get that right then that's probably a deal breaker. What software do I need? I need something more than Mario. Mario is good. No, Mario is great. Mario platformers are consistently the best in class, Mario Sports manage to straddle the accessible/deep line brilliantly, Mario RPGs manage to keep thinking up awesome battle mechanics and are wonderfully tongue in cheek... but I want a game with some narrative on it. I want the Hero Journey across Hyrule, or perhaps an entry in the slowly expanding Metroid universe. I want an RPG from Mistwalker or from Monolith. Until the Wii U has a story to tell me then it probably doesn't need to be purchased. Edited March 8, 2012 by Frosted Mini-Wheats

Coming from just properly gaming on the PC the last year, I have to learn a new control scheme with some games and its not a problem. Ultimately you'll be using the Wii U controller. You learn the buttons, maybe the screen is used, and that's it. I don't see how that gets in the way of enjoying a title. deanb
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-04-02-wii-u-less-powerful-than-ps3-xbox-360-developers-say So "sources" say the Wii U sucks even by PS3/360 standards, never mind what PS4 n NeXtbox might bring. On top of that apparently it's simpler to code for the PS3/Vita combo than the Wii U and its tablet.
TheMightyEthan
Good, that means that PS4/X720 games won't be gimped by speccing them for the Wii U like they might have been if it were say 80% as powerful as them. With it being comparable to current consoles then it will just be like the Wii was with the PS360 this cycle.

TheFlyingGerbil
Jeez, that source sounds like he has a right downer on Nintendo. I'm reserving judgement as more rumours have it as surprisingly more powerful, and yet more saying as powerful. We'll have to wait until we actually see proper games running on it. As for the ease of coding for the tablet, Obviously it would be better if it were easier so people could concentrate on cool ideas rather than implementing them but the main thing is everyone with the console will have the tablet so developers will use it. It doesn't matter how easy it is to code for the vita on ps3 games because developers aren't going to waste a lot of resource on something that not many people will use.
