  1. 1. Buying a Wii U?

    • Pre-ordered/will buy before launch
    • I'm waiting for a specific franchise announcement
    • Will buy it when cheaper
    • Probably not buying
    • Definitely not buying
    • Flipping it

Here are the supposed specs:

CPU: “Espresso” CPU on the Wii U has three enhanced Broadway cores

GPU: “GPU7” AMD Radeon™-based High Definition GPU. Unique API = GX2, which supports Shader Model 4.0 (DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 3.3 equivalent functionality)

Memory: Mem1 = 32MB Mem2 = 1GB (that applications can use)

Storage: Internal 8 GB with support for SD Cards (SD Cards up to 2GB/ SDHC Cards up to 32GB) and External USB Connected Hard Drives

Networking: 802.11 b/g/n Wifi

Video Output: Supports 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i

Video Cables Supported: Compatible cables include HDMI, Wii D-Terminal, Wii Component Video, Wii RGB, Wii S-Video Stereo AV and Wii AV.

USB: Four USB 2.0 Ports

Three cores is just weird. Without knowing the performance of the CPU, the rest of the specs look like they would have been fairly impressive six years ago.

AMD Broadway is the chip on the Wii. That means the Wii U chip, if that's correct, is ...three Wii's ducktaped together. I would assume it's a bit better given the "enhanced" thrown in there. But still, pretty much same chip as the Wii. Which I guess helps with development. (I have said many times I think PS4 should stick with Cell architecture). The gig of RAM will help, but yeah it's a console that'd have come out 4 years back, but for Nintendo it's pretty much on par with expectations. They won't make a PS4/Xbox 3 comparable console.

This direct quote from Miyamoto in June sounds like they aren't very far along in the development of Zelda Wii U at all.

Yes, but Miyamoto always says weird things. Like, that the 3DS won't get a redesign, days before the 3DS XL was announced.

So.. Wii U = 6 Game Cubes ducktaped together?

Launching 8 Dec in Japan for £210 ($340) and £252 ($400) equivalent (so not the 3 models rumoured, at least in Japan). Basic model is white The Premium bundle is black and sounds interesting It comes 32GB flash memory instead of 8GB (hopefully built in cos with a 32GB SD, 64GB would be enough to put of getting an external HDD for a while) and Nintendo Network Premium which

"sounds like the Nintendo version of PlayStation Plus and includes free eShop points and 10 per cent off digital downloads – although you can only join it by buying the Premium console."

the last part makes it sound like it isn't a recurring subscription cost. If that's the case it would be a great deal. Can't wait to see what they announce for the EU.

Extra gamepads are £107 ($170) - half the cost of the system(!), pro controllers are £40 ($65)

I'm hoping 8 Dec is a worldwide release date else it would mean after Christmas in the US/EU which seems like a really bad move. Even 8 Dec is very late in my mind, and I bet it's not through choice.

edit: apparently it has 2GB of system memory. 1GB for OS and 1GB for games to access. I guess that means it's going to be able to load up the miiverse etc. without quitting out of games, as 1GB is massive amount to be reserved for a console OS. It is good that it mean that the 1GB for games won't be eaten up by the system though. It's 20 times more powerful than the Wii, whatever that may mean.

@Jack: That's the Japan price, and a lot of stuff is more expensive in Japan. The US price should be announced in the next couple hours.

@Excel: Even if that is what they meant, it would still apply to the above-ground sections of Skyward Sword.

I think we all know the price is going to be between 250 and 300 by now. And if thats the case, the pad will still be over 100 dollars. I doubt theyd be flexible with that. The fucking thing doesnt even come with a sensor bar in Japan. AND theyre also selling Nintendoland separately instead of packing it in. I can imagine that being packed in in the US though.

Cus honestly, who would buy that shit?

From IGN

During its Wii U preview event in New York City today, Nintendo revealed the release date for Wii U. The system will be available on November 18th in North America in two configurations:

Basic set (8GB) - $299.99: Wii U console, GamePad, HDMI cable, sensor bar, AC adapter

Deluxe set (32GB) - $349.99: Same as basic, plus GamePad charging cradle, stand for GamePad and console

November 30th is the European release date.

Anyway, I'd buy Nintendo Land, if its a great mini game collection and cheaper than other titles.

I guess this means the Europe price will be €300 and €350. I can't seem to find if Nintendo Network Premium will be in the Western Deluxe set though.

Only thing that looked remotely interesting was Nintendo TVii and I watch bollocks all TV, besides which it's NA only. Most games were the usual Wii cartoony stuff. Which is ok in small doses, but not really my thing. Activision's offerings looked like arse. Bond and CoD both look like the sort of games we saw on Xbox and PS3 at the start of the hardware generation. All in all for £300 quid, I'll just wait for PS4.

2/10 would not bang.

What about Rayman Legends and ZombiU and The Wonderful 101 and Lego City Undercover? They look pretty nice all things considered. Seems some stores are pegging the UK price for the premium model at about £250.

Its a better launch line up then I was expecting, and Bayonetta 2 and Monster Hunter 3G are pretty surprising releasing in the launch window.

It all feels a bit kiddy-console with a couple of bones thrown to the grown ups. I'm not going to look down my nose at anyone who enjoys playing these games, but they are not to my taste.

I wasn't a fan of Bayonetta either (I thought the enemy designs were a mess and lacked character) and Monster Hunter while ok on PSP was a bit of a sterile experience and never grabbed me like I hoped it would. Overall, I didn't see anything that excited me.

ah yeah I get you. It does seem a bit too focused on that side of things, but I don't mind, used to it being that way on a Nintendo console. The Lego City: Undercover trailer made me laugh, this looks awesome.

Loads of other trailers on that Nintendo channel too. Its a better launch line up then I was expecting but right now I can't say there's any complete and utter killer apps, like a 3D Mario or Metroid sequel. Some nice Eshop releases there.

Wii TVii coming to Canada was interesting. Since we don't have TiVo here it would be great if the service was compatible with my Shaw PVR.

I'm not much of a CoD fan, as you guys know. But IF I was to buy Blops 2 (and I didn't care about trophies), I think the Wii U version might be the way to go. Multiplayer with one player on the tablet and the other with a controller looks ideal for that sort of experience. I still prefer couch co-op, so hopefully this is implemented in some games I care about.

As for launch games, I would be so happy if Rayman Legends and New Super Mario Bros were launch games. Yes, I want the system for two side scrolling platformers.

Yeah, I'm sorry, Nintendo do not have their finger on my pulse. Coloring your console black doesn't make it hardcore. Trying to sell me on 2D platformers, 1st-party kiddie titles/30-year-old franchises, a tablet controller, and low storage capacity is like trying to bait a shark with a head of lettuce. If I'm supposed to look forward to all the multiplatform 3rd party stuff, I already have something(s) that can play those, and I'm pretty confident that MS and Sony's next offerings will outclass in terms of hardware. Confident enough that I'll at least wait to see what's on the table before shelling out for the Wii-U. As Thursday said, I get that some people enjoy those types of titles that Nintendo are offering, and I can enjoy them too, in small doses. I'm not making that the core of the part of the console experience that is supposed to be unique to the console I'm playing on. I'm definitely not getting excited for a new platform to play them on. Well, them and games that I will have beaten over a year ago when the system releases.

Certainly think there is a place in the market for this, it's a family friendly console all the way, from not hogging the TV to having "GTA Junior" as one of the lead titles. I'm just not the target market for this and the lip-service to the core provided by Activision was not that impressive.
