  1. 1. Buying a Wii U?

    • Pre-ordered/will buy before launch
    • I'm waiting for a specific franchise announcement
    • Will buy it when cheaper
    • Probably not buying
    • Definitely not buying
    • Flipping it

Some people have noticed that it looks like the controller is being recharged. Not a big surprise since it would be absolutely and appallingly ridiculous to still rely on AA batteries.

I'll give it a shot. After all, the N64 controller looked like a complicated mess, but there was some method to its madness. What bothers me is how the right analog is above the buttons. That will take some getting use to as for years the "adjust camera" stick has been below.

I wish I could be more excited about the Wii U, but its big selling point seems to be 'will actually get go ports of games you'll have already bought on the PC/360/PS3' in conjunction with 'awkward control scheme again!'.

Not to mention the first couple of years Nintendo most likely milking the whole "Look! Mario in HD!" "Look! Metroid in HD!" thing instead of actually working on new IPs.

Quite a bit of news from their Pre3 video feed.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/171695/Nintendo_reveals_Wii_Us_Miiverse_new_hardware_specifics.php

They made a quick explanation of the changes and redesigns of the tablet controller(officially called the Wii U GamePad), which has clickable buttons, a TV remote function, and an NFC read/write field(that blank square). They also revealed the Wii U Pro Controller, a wireless traditional controller that's pretty damn similar to the 360's controller shape, but keeps the layout of the GamePad.

And following a deliciously cheesy skit, they offered some details regarding their online infrastructure, which seems to adopt a lot of social networking features and player notes/comments (something slightly reminding me of Dark Souls' warning messages), among other features, in something they call The Miiverse.

Still a lot left to be said until Tuesday's press conference. This is only a taste.

An appetizer, if you will, to the 3-course meal that is e3.

So seeing that the WiiU offers a pro controller, I wonder in a few years how many multiplatform developers will ignore the tablet and just have games identical to the PS3/360 versions?

I find it interesting that the WiiU's most interesting feature is going to probably be ignored, but only time will tell I guess.

No different than getting used to the d-pad being down where the left analog pad had been when the Xbox was introduced.

I still maintain that every controller should have 4 modules, one each for the d-pad, each stick, and the face buttons, that you can rearrange however the hell you want.

That would increase both the cost of the controller, the complexity of the manuals and also lead to increased breakages. You get the bonus of selling replacement modules for $10 a pop, but the downside of being the4 ones with the controllers that can end up costing $100+ over it's lifetime.
