TheFlyingGerbil
Shopto.net (a large, reputable online game retailer in the UK) has Wii U console and games up for pre-order. I know for the console they will be erring on the side of caution with a high price that they can bring down later if need be but I'm sure they didn't just pluck it out of the air either. Anyway, they've got it on there for £280 (which is $430). Do you think that's reasonable, and will you be tempted at that price? Possibly more interesting though is the price of the games which range from £33 ($50) to £40 ($61). so it looks like they aren't going to be any dearer than WIi games. What's best though is that ZombieU and Assassin's Creed III are two of the £33 ones. Gotta say I'm kinda tempted... I can always cancel them if I can get them in a bundle. TheMightyEthan
I personally doubt I'll be willing to pay more than $300 (£195) for the console itself. If they had a bundle though with games I actually wanted (read: not NintendoLand, or not only NintendoLand) that brought it down so the effective price of the console itself, without the games, was less than that I'd get it. TheFlyingGerbil
Here's a quote from Reggie: "We want to launch at a price that's going to represent an ongoing great value. If you look at the Wii, we stayed at $250 for a really long time, so we're going to give that same level of thought to Wii U. "How do we launch at a value that we're going to be able to sustain for a long time? I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised, if you will, about the way we're managing value equation." Now I know he's not saying it will be $250 dollars but I hope he's not dumb enough to mention the actual dollar price of the Wii if he knows the Wii U will be substantially higher.
Mister Jack
I got burned once with the 3DS. I can wait for the inevitable price drop/bundle deal.
P4: Gritty Reboot
I am betting on $249. $299 is the highest they will go. Or I will eat my Mario hat.
TheFlyingGerbil
I got burned once with the 3DS. I can wait for the inevitable price drop/bundle deal. I think they're hoping more for the Wii style pricing than 3DS. They learned their lesson with the overpricing on the handheld. It will be more reasonable to begin with and not be reduced for a long while as happened with the Wii. I'm sure that didn't get a drop for a couple of years. CorgiShinobi
Saw this on Reddit a few days ago, and I think it describes what I'm feeling now for the WiiU. Like, I do have interest and ZombiU is a big factor, but I also remember the hype behind Red Steel (another Ubisoft title) that didn't live anywhere near it's perceived capabilities.
TCP
Here we go again... no online multiplayer for Pikmin 3. I guess that will rule out New Super Mario Bros U as well.
FMW
Oh god, why would you want online multiplayer in New Super Mario Bros U? The playful friend/enemy relationship in games like NSMB, Zelda Four Swords, or Rayman Origins just completely falls apart online. Pikmin is a shame though, the competitive modes in Pikmin 2 were a blast and I would have loved to play those online.
P4: Gritty Reboot
I don't really care about online in Wii/console games anymore. I know a lot of people do, but I just use it for local and my PC for online games.

UnstableArk
Most of Pikmin's appeal lies in the singleplayer game. Disappointing that there isn't online multiplayer, but it's not a huge loss.

I was playing LittleBigPlanet online last weekend and it worked fine, especially when everyone had mics. I don't see how this would be any worst. Playing with friends on the same couch would be ideal, but having the option to play online would still be nice.
TheMightyEthan
Why does the fact that Pikmin doesn't have online mean NSMBU won't?
TCP
Just seems to me that Pikmin would be the more obvious choice for online multiplayer. So if they didn't do it for Pikmin, no way for NSMBU. But maybe I'm wrong. Nintendo is hard to predict.
TheMightyEthan
Miyamoto says that Pikmin 3 isn't online because there are too many individual units to keep track of. What he says makes sense, because RTS games have never been viable online.
CorgiShinobi
A part of me feels like Nintendo is simply hesitant now to add online where it won't be smooth enough. Remember Brawl? No one I know, myself included, could play a simple Random Match through the online multiplayer. Sure, you could possibly connect with another player after some minutes, but the thing ran like pond water. 99.99% of my multiplayer in Brawl was with my Friends List. Nintendo's online, infrastructure or whatever, is probably still behind where meeting someone for random co-op in a game like Pikmin would be a lagfest. Maybe your Friends List would work, but it would be this limited experience. Still, having local co-op is better than nothing and I'm still going to find myself with a copy of Pikmin 3, whether I can play with some kid hundreds of miles away or not. TheFlyingGerbil
maybe with the pikmin running around and actually being fairly fast paced during the fights it would be more like FPS levels of data volume and speed needed and that wouldn't be possible with the hundreds of individual pikmin running around? TheMightyEthan
Starcraft seems to do just fine with lots and lots of tiny, spastic units.
deanb
Yeah Starcraft is fine. It's not a problem with the game, it's a problem with Nintendo. Sure they're ahead of the pack in creating 1001 controllers for your console, but they're way behind in letting you play with someone more than a few feet from you. I don't get why while developing the Wii U they've not rectified that? Do they honestly believe online is something not worth bothering with in this day n age still? I stand behind my reckoning that they won't see 9th gen.
TheFlyingGerbil
from the actual quote it sounded like they tried to implement online for Pikmin, but it was unsatisfactory. Now maybe it's their fault they can't implement it in a satisfactory manner, but it is still the correct decision to not put out a game with a major broken aspect. And Dean, I'm sure you're not the only person to predict that, but you're only joining in a chorus that's been singing since the N64. THey've not got the tune right yet. Yea it would be kind of shitty to play with random people, but my brother and I live shy of 400 miles apart, and the only way we would be able to play that game together (like we did with the NSMBWii) would be to play online. P4: Gritty Reboot
How have they not rectified it? Launch titles like Pikmin aside, by all accounts Wii U will have better and more robust online play and features than the Wii did. I don't know where you get off saying they won't see a ninth gen when they've trounced both competitors soundly this generation and are dominating the handheld race. Slightly anemic online does not sound a death knell for Nintendo, especially with their target audience.
TheFlyingGerbil
While we're moaning, I'd like to say I'm kind of disappointed they didn't bite the bullet and drop support for the wiimote without motion plus. I'm guessing the wii u will come with a wiimote plus, and for that reason hope that it will only be shovelware party games that I'm not interested in that use the standard wiimote but it's hard to get annoyed as I'm not even sure how much the wiimote will be used in general play. They've not got the tune right yet. There wasn't any online system that was kinda expected to be in place back in the N64 days. And only mobile game to compete with was Snake. Nintendo has a problem unlike the other two in that they only sell video game systems, any losses there are losses for the whole company, but MS n Sony at least can subsidise any losses made on the gaming front (and expand into other areas) with their other depts, which also include mobile depts too.
