TCP
Being able to play console games without using the TV is really what I'm most excited about for the Wii U. If you live on your own, or with your parents (and have your own TV), it won't be a big issue, but I live with my girlfriend and we only have one TV. Even if we had two, it's still nice to sit together. This way instead of her being bored and watching me play Mass Effect, she can watch whateverthefuck she watches on TV and I can play my game. But where the Wii U fails is, I would never play a Mass Effect game on a Nintendo console.

I just have a difficult time believing that people who sit around and be bored while their significant others or family members do something they enjoy are a very large audience for this. But then again, it would fit pretty good with what Ethan said earlier about targeting groups.

CorgiShinobi
I'd like to hear your explanation too, unless something is massively flying over my head. (Other than all my ME saves being on one platform). As for the WiiU-TV thing, I would greatly enjoy playing my console while someone watches the television. Currently I'm staying with my parents over the summer. There are two televisions in the household, but most of the time my father will want to watch his shows on one while my mother will watch her shows on the other. This leaves me without a television to use for my consoles. Either I wait for the television hooked up to my consoles to become free or the folks agree on watching the same thing. #1 why I'm behind in Dragon's Dogma. If I was on my own again, sure, my little television is mine alone. Have a giant family-sized television that would be great for games, but isn't solely for that purpose? Leave your console there still because you can play on your WiiU controller!
deanb
Two of the TVs in my mums house don't have Scart ports which kinda makes them a tad useless if they're the "spare" ones around left for gaming on (thankfully I've got my own TV, incidentally the only one with Freeview built in and HD. So not a problem). The TVs become super useless in a few months time when they become big bang viewers n nothing more.
TCP
I'd like to hear your explanation too, unless something is massively flying over my head. (Other than all my ME saves being on one platform). Obviously, saves would be a big one for Mass Effect (though that wasn't big enough to stop me from play ME2 and ME3 on PS3). But for starters. Most of the multi-platform games (ME3, Arkham City) are coming out about a year too late. Lots of these games have multiplayer, and my friends list on PS3 features many of my real life friends, plus you dudes, and I don't see everyone switching to Wii U right away (not to mention: Friend Codes). Even though I believe the Wii U will be slightly more powerful than 360/PS3 I don't think we'll see games looking any better on it for awhile, this will be early in it's development cycle, and games always tend to look pretty crappy. But most importantly, and I know this doesn't matter for some people, Nintendo has said there still won't be an achievement system. I have a real hard time sitting through a game and not getting anything to show for it, unless there was no other option and it's a game I really want to play (Mario/Zelda/Metroid). When PS3/Steam/360 all have achievement systems, Nintendo's refusal to implement one of their own, just reeks of their usual attempts at trying to be "different". P4: Gritty Reboot
The achievement issue is a little muddy. They have said there are achievements but they are "developer-driven" for each game, though there is a Nintendo-made console achievement feature. I wonder if something isn't being lost in translation, because from all I've read it can be taken as either a "yes" on them, but not mandatory for games, or a "no" on them other than isolated in-game achievements as in Metroid Prime 3. We will see as release approaches (for the record, I don't care about achievements at all, even on Steam).
TCP
I interpretted it as games can have in-game achievements, but there wasn't an overall level, and no way to compare trophies with your friends.
TheFlyingGerbil
Wii U game box branding has been revealed (and confirmed as 'too legit to quit' by a ubisoft PR): What do you think? I don't like at as much as the Wii packaging, which is my favourite this gen. I think the blue with the green/yellow strip and the variable width curve with the general uglyness of the wiiU logo it's all just a bit messy for me. Strangelove
The colors are awful, but Ive always been a fan of the Wii logo's font. It's classy. Yellow and light blue are not. It looks like some sort of weird computer textbook or something now.
TheFlyingGerbil
I've always been a fan of the Wii logo's font. It's classy. I like the U logo, and the Wii font individually, but I don't think the two look connected at all. edit: strangely they seem even less connected in the single colour on the box, than the two colours of the actual logo: Edited August 9, 2012 by TheFlyingGerbil
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, at first I didn't mind it, but the more I look at it the more I think the colors were a retarded choice. The Wii has the best box labeling this gen, the WiiU has the worst.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I think the 2nd logo is okay, but maybe that's just because the one next to it looks terrible.
TheMightyEthan
This one's fine with me: It's the game box banner that's terribad.
TCP
Kind of reminds me of the GameCube cases, with worse colours. Seriously don't like those colours.
P4: Gritty Reboot
I like it. It's a little funky but it makes me remember the Gamecube and get all nostalgic and fuzzy feeling.
TheMightyEthan
The design is similar to the Gamecube cases, but like TCP said the colors are just terrible.
TCP
I liked the white and grey look of the Wii. It was sleek, and made the cases stand out in a good way. Why not, since the Wii U is a sequel to the Wii, keep that alive??
Faiblesse Des Sens
They're likely worried about consumer confusion. They damn well should be.

Faiblesse Des Sens
Somehow the Wii U has regressed several generations back in box design.
