  1. 1. Buying a Wii U?

    • Pre-ordered/will buy before launch
    • I'm waiting for a specific franchise announcement
    • Will buy it when cheaper
    • Probably not buying
    • Definitely not buying
    • Flipping it

My finger is hovering over the Wii U Basic 'buy now' button on Amazon. I can't decide if i actually want one, or if i'm just being caught up in all the pre-release excitement. Also my spending in 2012 has been insane, and i really shouldn't be thinking about flashing another £300 on a games console right now.

However, Mario in HD. Damn that sounds good.

I'd be tempted if it was a 3D Mario rather than a NSMB game; NSMB has never really appealed to me much. Though I will admit that a significant part of that is because you have to use the Wiimote, so if they had just made it playable with the Wii U Pro Controller I would have been much more tempted.

Re: Bayonetta 2: My first reaction was "Wii U exclusive? How weird." Then I found out that SEGA had dropped the franchise and was like "oh, that makes sense then." People need to calm down.

Meant to respond to this earlier but phone acted up (well..more Chrome than the phone)

I'd say a good golden rule before getting a platform is to have 10 games you want for it first. That way you're not buying it and having only a couple title for a year or so to play which would drive you off the platform pretty sharpish before it's matured, and also means you get to buy it post launch when everything starts dropping in price and the hardware more refined and stable. About the only reason to get at launch is for the "FIRST!!1!!" factor, not like it's a cake that'll go off, it can only get better as time goes on. Also it's worth holding on to wait n see what PS4 n Xbox 3 news crops up next year. It'd suck if your console budget was blown on the Wii U then something in the PS4/Xbox 3 really enticed you.

As for the HD mario, as I mentioned to you on twitter:

That screenshot looks fantastic, we got a lot to look forward to for the Wii U. Metroid, Mario, and Zelda in HD is going to be fantastic.

Ethan, you are the opposite of me. Maybe it's because I somehow never played Super Mario 64 back in the day, I am totally a sucker for sidescrolling Mario games. If Nintendo released one a year (or two a year like in 2012) I'd be a very happy guy. I liked Galaxy 1 and 2, and 3D Land might be my favourite 3D Mario but I still probably found more enjoyment in NSMB on the DS and Wii in recent years.

New Super Mario Bros U looks different enough than New Super Mario Bros 2 that I shouldn't have a problem playing it right after the 3DS version, so I'll definitely pick it up on launch day.

You make good sense, however when it comes to new tech i for whatever reason, like getting on the bandwagon early. In hindsight, that phylsophue has probably cost me upwards of £100 on my Vita purchase however. So i'll probably hang fire until after Christmas. That GF has a Wii that she barely uses (as do i) and frankly the launch lineup isn't that impressive.

Thanks for the thoughts. My credit card lives to fight another day.

Funny thing is that right now the money I might have used for a Wii U is going to instead go toward the new iPod touch, which I have been wanting for a LONG time. Gotta wonder just how much the launch of a new iphone will affect Wii U sales. You'd think they're completely different markets, but here I am holding off an a console so I can buy an mp3 player.

I don't think I can stress enough how much the controller ruined it for me. I was actually quite excited for NSMBWii until I actually played it. I just can't stand holding the Wiimote sideways like that, and the shake-to-special-jump really irritated me as well.

*Edit* - Sorry, wrote that hours ago and apparently forgot to hit post.

I've never had much luck getting Dolphin to do well on my PC with all the prettiness of that screenshot, it always runs in slow motion for some reason even though I would think my computer should be able to handle it fine (even knowing that emulators are much harder on hardware than native games of the same quality).

Same here. Playing Super Smash Bros was just weird. The buttons to me were just all over the place. Luckily they're giving three different options for controllers this time XD. About the Slo-mo in Dolphin, It's partially your computer but it's also part of the emulation problem. Some games just don't work well. Slow Framerates make it slow and Fast Frame rates make the game incredibly fast.

"MCV understands the trade price for the Basic Pack is £205, the Premium Pack has a trade cost of £246 and the ZombiU version (which includes the Premium Pack, a Pro Controller and a copy of Ubisoft's horror shooter ZombiU) has a cost price of £270."

Sounds like the retailers are adding around £50 to the price they're paying. Sounds quite high to me though I've no idea what would be normal, just that I always read the retailers don't make much profit on consoles, wasn't that what all the hullabaloo was with the PSP GO?

I've got the $350 edition pre-ordered and paid off... I did that right away on the morning when pre-orders opened. Since that time, I have had an awful lot of second thoughts. I've never been an early adopter, why would I start now? Especially with the software price being $60, owning the console right away to play the games as they come out seems an extraordinarily expensive endeavor.

So rather than follow through with a costly mistake, I think I'm gonna pick mine up and flip it online. I'll turn this money losing decision into a quick $100, or even more maybe!

  • 2 weeks later...

Dean, could you add a poll, along the lines of:

-pre-ordered/will buy in launch window,

-will probably buy when a particular game comes, e.g. Zelda, 3D Mario,

-will probably buy after a price drop,

-probably won't buy.

Or if you can think of better options, add/change them. Thankies.
