  1. 1. Buying a Wii U?

    • Pre-ordered/will buy before launch
    • I'm waiting for a specific franchise announcement
    • Will buy it when cheaper
    • Probably not buying
    • Definitely not buying
    • Flipping it

An apparently EU only 'feature' is that you can only download 18 rated titles between 11pm and 3am, this is regardless of any age restriction settings you have enabled/disabled, and even if you don't have a minor registered on your system.

This is pretty ridiculous - I generally game in the afternoon and if the mood takes me to buy a downloadable game (which is surely the point) I can't until night when the mood may have passed. Grrrr.

In other news, Nintendo only thinks your indie if you have an office. If you don't have an office then I guess they assume you don't exist. Like Introversion, those guys aren't indie cos they don't (last I checked) have an office. (Not that they'd ever want to work with a console manufacturer again). So yes, the Wii U will be awesome for indies....as long as you've an established business, contacts with their favoured publishers, or success with other consoles.

What the hell?

That...makes no sense...

I've never heard of anything like that on any console/download service...that's insane!

Apparently to do with Germany. As David Jaffe already proved earlier this year, why bother just limited German laws and stipulations to Germany, when you can fuck over the whole of Europe with their rules. Not like Europe has any other reasons to have an ingrained dislike of Germany already.

Wow I didn't realize how much of a nanny state Germany was.

Knew they hated game violence...but to that extent?

My understanding is that it's to do with the TV watershed time in Germany, which doesn't apply to videogames, but Nintendo is being overly cautious. And screwing over the rest of Europe in the process, like Dean said.

That's gonna really hurt their core game sales, I imagine.

If you are planning to download full games on the Wii U then you would know how to get that space to download games.

That's bollox blocking that content though, I assume it won't last long considering how it effects EA and Ubisoft games, which are the biggest 18+ rated titles.

Not false advertising. No matter how much ends up getting used in the formatting process, whether it be 0.9GB or a significant 4GB, the drive itself is designed to 8GB capacity.

Not like you could even download a majority of modern retail games with a full 8GB. There's an article somewhere out there, I think debating digital and disc, but all an 8GB model is good for is the Virtual Console where games range in the megabytes and not the gigabytes. Even a 32GB model wouldn't last you that long if you plan on going digital with your games. Software like Netflix though are a dozen or so megabytes, so if you want to keep your Wii U "casual," it's still possible to maintain relatively "free" disk space.

EDIT: Oh, but yeah, I got to try a Wii U demo kiosk, but the only game they had was Rayman Legends. It was a very good game still, just wanted to try the actual current titles. I was surprised at how light the Wii U Game Pad was, but I think I would need some time to get use to the width of the pad.

I love the width of the pad - I've always hated how close together my hands are on traditional gamepads. It's the natural distance you hold your hands apart, including for example at a keyboard.

Speaking of Rayman Legends, the demo is supposed to be available for download on the 13th of December. Kind of weird when the game isn't out until March but it's worth having a look come Thursday. Hopefully we'll get some more demos on there as at the moment the EU only has one, but never look a gift horse in the mouth - at least they're doing them.

EA doesn't have much push with Nintendo. Ubisoft do, but Ubisofts main Nintendo game is Just Dance, a game not really affected by the limitations.

Not to mention EA has Mass Effect, which was being advertised at the Wii U kiosk I was playing. I don't believe the trilogy set is available, but given that the PS3 now has the first Mass Effect, I wouldn't doubt the trilogy making its way within half a year or so.

I think that depends entirely on how well ME3 does on Wii U. And given the fact that I don't think it's going to do well because the majority of Wii U owners interested in playing it likely played it in the past 9 months on a different system. Still, I think games like ME3, AC3, and Arkham City were important for Nintendo to have, even if no one's playing them. Having those games says a lot about the system and what Nintendo fans can (hopefully) expect.

I had a gander into town to get a scarf

Hipster.

Is it the console or the TV they use that makes it look really fuzzy/out of focus? Almost like the kind of effect you get when you're looking at 3D film with the glasses off.

Must be the TV, mine looks great on my Samsung screen.

Wearing scarfs in winter is a hipster thing now? Does that make Tom Baker King of the Hipsters? The shop was being renovated anyway so I'll likely just get a neck tube tomorrow morning as planned since I liked my old one.

Also wouldn't it kind of make sense to pick a good TV for their display? btw I don't know what game it was, I'd have thought Rayman but looking up online to see if I could find that particular level (or see the sorta blurring effect in the videos I find out it makes extensive use of the gamepad, which in the store games case was just displaying 2 buttons). The game in particular had the player going along like a castle wall of sorts, 2D platformer (if thinking it was Rayman didn't give that away), and the enemies were lots of guys with shields above their heads. Lots as in they almost made a secondary floor. Ring any bells with people?

edit: So this is a common issue with their display? Seems very un-Nintendo to have such a blemish, especially if you're using it for promotional displays.

ZombiU and Assassin's Creed were being far more pushed than Just Dance 4 is on Wii U. In fact, Just Dance 4 is also out on the Wii, so its pretty much already going to be bought most on that, and its been out on that since October. If the store restrictions effect people buying those titles on Wii U then Ubisoft will have a problem, espically since those two titles would have cost a lot more money to bring to Wii U.
