  1. 1. Buying a Wii U?

    • Pre-ordered/will buy before launch
    • I'm waiting for a specific franchise announcement
    • Will buy it when cheaper
    • Probably not buying
    • Definitely not buying
    • Flipping it

No guys, we're not thinking large enough here.

Iwata and Reggie will hold a death match to determine the Supreme Emperor of Nintendo of Earth, with Miyamoto and some random white guy filling the roles left behind. It doesn't matter who as those positions will become figurehead roles promoting the grace and authority of the Supreme Emperor.

Well. I think it's safe to say that today's Nintendo Direct saved Nintendo's butt. We have a new main-line Zelda game out for Christmas, tons of Wii U exclusives from third party publishers, a new Metroid in the vein of the GameCube Metroid games, and a great Studio Ghibli/Nintendo joint project!

Talking of third parties, to expand on the prior "Frostbite 2/3 doesn't run on Wii U*, likely many games not coming from EA", EA has dropped Wii U support entirely.

Which is pretty big and damning news for Nintendo. They've still Ubisoft who have been a pretty big partner, but to completely lose EA. They've a fair few casual IPs too, no BF4 isn't a biggy for Wii U audience, but Sims spin-offs, PvZ 2, EA Sports would be missed.

*which is bullshit because they're developing an iOS/Android version.

Today's Nintendo Direct was mostly stuff we already knew, and Nintendo locking down one more Japanese third party exclusive.  Sonic isn't gonna excite a lot of internet enthusiasts, but at least it'll sell.  It's the opposite of that Bayonetta 2 pickup.

Makes you wonder what's even left in Japan for Nintendo to lay claim to.  Castlevania?  I can totally see them locking down Castlevania once the Lords of Shadow trilogy wraps up.

And GOH!, it pains me deeply to admit this but... a return to Gamecube era Metroid isn't gonna save anything :(  Metroid Prime never had the sales to back up it's quality

I thought Generations was quite good, especially the 2D parts.  I'll at least have an eye on this one.

*Edit* - Of course, I already own the system.  If I didn't I really wouldn't care about this at all.

Speaking of EA (sort of):

The WiiU is crap.Less powerful than an XBOX360.Poor online/store.Weird tablet.Nintendo are walking dead at this point.

Sony, MS, Apple, Google all following the same playbook … standard, powerful, hardware, with focus on software and services.

Nintendo are still operating like it’s 1990.They should have “done a Sega” and offered Mario/Zelda as PS4/Durango exclusives.

Instead they make this awful console, and this … nintendo.com/wiiu/downloads….Just stop it!Just make great games!

It is an utterly intentional decision to focus our resources on markets which actually matter … like mobile, and Gen4.

One more  . Nintendo platforms have always been very poor revenue-wise for third parties.Only Mario and Zelda make money.

Yep, we’ve got plenty of problems, but WiiU isn’t where that family/casual market is.It’s on mobile/tablet now!

According to?

Anyways, it's pretty obvious they thought they could keep riding this Wii train all of the way to the money bank. They're just not doing enough now that they're in this situation. I say abort the Wii U and immediately come out with the Wii 2. And by immediately I mean 2-3 years or however long this sort of thing takes.

Man, been a while since I followed Scott Hanselman. I think I stopped when he started heavily pushing stuff for his seminars n what not. But threw out interesting tweets now n then. And kinda sucks that bad formatting of tweets posted in articles can make it seem like he gave the statements as opposed to receiving them.

Who the hell ever claimed the PS3 was underpowered? Exotic and overcomplicated, but if anything a complaint of being overpowered was the main one with the PS3.

And if anything I'd guess a senior software engineer at EA might have a fair bit of knowledge of the gubbins inside a Wii U, which is at best on-par with 7th gen consoles.
