yeah, it seems like having chickens is either a love or hate thing. no one feels like it's just ok, people either adore having chickens or hate it. i had a friend who had chickens when i was little and i remember loving them, but if i finally get room to have some and i hate them / think they're a pain in the ass i'll make everyone who told me so some delicious cookies!

I have plans involving a farm too. No neighbours, a forest and river nearby, lots of animals and no people. My country subsidizes people who build self-sufficient homes, so I could probably make it work.

I'd grow my own food, use solar cells and a water turbine, bunch of cats, dogs, goats and chickens and a yard facing west so I can walk out of my house nakes each morning while the sun rises on D-K junior. Wife, a kid, fisherprice swingset, the whole 9 yards. Life as a hermit.. awesome.

Oh you'll never find a more convinced misanthrope than me, I'm even keeping the "Wife" slot optional. The kid is a given, because I'm a narcissist and I'd love a little me running around, insulting the intelligence of the local wildlife, questioning my authority when he feels he's got a point, psycho-analyzing the clueless kids at school.. Oh I'd be an awesome dad :D

Also I find the profession of farmer oddly noble and enlightened as opposed to a job based on, and supported by, mass consumerism. Mostly it's because I just hate people, though.

My grandparents have a mini farm along with a chicken coop and that shit is a headache to take care of. Sure you never have to pay for produce or eggs, but I think I'd rather spend ~$20 a week than go through the hassle.

Chicken coops are the worst. Fuckin chickens stink and they're a huge mess.

Thanks for shitting on their dreams guys. Real friendly 'round these parts

i too try to make it sound a bit more noble but i just hate people. and everyone who thinks chicken coops are too smelly are welcome to just avoid our houses.

I'd probably have free-range chickens anyway, maybe a little shed for them to sleep, but I wouldn't want to coop them only to have myself clean a confined space with panicking chickens in it.

Having said that, Brida.. if you're ever near my house and smelly chickens block your path, give a shout-out, we'll grab a motel. (Kanji's optional)

ha, yeah, i don't plan on my chickens staying in a coop except at night either. that just sounds inhumane, they come home every night anyway. they're better at finding home than dogs or cats, honestly, they'll just go and graze and come home ready for cuddling and water. anyone who thinks chickens are gross has never had a chicken come home looking for them. it melts your heart.

My grandmother likes to point out that chickens LIKE being in a coup all day and you have have to scare them out sometimes. She also said her father would play the radio for the chickens. What effect this had, I don't know.

usually when they're super warm in there. i don't plan on forcing them outside in the winter if they don't want to be.

I thought about making a, "What do you want for Christmas?" thread, but that seemed trivial so close to the holidays. So instead, what are some things you want? It can be big or small. Maybe you simply want a new graphics card, or maybe you want beach front real estate in the Caribbean. Lets try to keep it to tangible objects (no "I want a zombie apocalypse to happen") and grounded within the reality (no "I want a portal gun"). Other than that, let loose.

I'll start us off with a dream ride of my own. The Lotus Evora:

Feel free to add anything you'd wish.

Ugh, look at those graphics. The reflections are all wrong and the background is all fuzzy. And... are those jaggies? Yeah, I'm definitely seeing jaggies.

So my grandparents-in-law (to be) gave the fiancee and I each $50 with instructions that we are to buy something for ourselves with it. I'm thinking a fountain pen if I don't get one for Christmas.

Either that or the newest Mystery Science Theater DVD set. With a new one coming out I should probably buy the most current one soon.
