Star Wars vs. Star Trek

I love Star Wars more. Hell look at my name. Star Wars had a major influence on my lack of social life in high school.

I like the original Star Trek movies, but I just can't get into the television shows for some reason.

Though I looove TNG.

Fuck Voyager, though. Really.

That one sucks.

Here's that classic video.

They are now locking LASERS on us.

What are your choices on this matter? Edited by Chewblaha

Star Wars has a place in my heart like no other. But, I actually watched ST more growing up than I did SW.

Kirk was a cowboy. Macho. Manly without a mustache.

And the women were hot.

SW was more of a superhero line to me because I only got to see the episodes 4 and 6. My parents didn't want me watching Empire, where all the meat was. When I finally saw Empire, I was in love. That movie is still the best.

But, as much as people compare them, they are two different movies. One is strictly SciFi (ST) while the other is about adventure and heros.

As you can tell by my gallery, I go to SW things (I hate the Celebration 6 is in Florida, so I will miss it). I know ST fans that speak Klingon and cosplay. Trekkies are cool for that shit. But they aren't the 501st!

I think Star Trek is a better series for people who want more out of their series without having to put all that time into reading the extended galaxy. You get more chances to see your characters and their personalities and all that.

I know you get to see them in the extended galaxy as well (Like when Chewie dies. Goddamn that's sad...), but it's a different experience in the reading category and the visual category.

Heroes don't die, Chewie.

The EU for SW is far more rich. Star Trek has more involved and convoluted timelines, where SW is quite a big range of time where shit can happen. Some of the most beloved SW characters are from the EU (Darth Bane, Thrawn).

Speaking of the books, did you ever check out the free series The Lost Tribe of The Sith? Worth reading once, but just for the last two released titles of that series. I mainly liked it because it was free. :)

I have not read it. Though I have heard about it.

I really loved the New Jedi order and the Yuuzhan Vong. Mainly because Borsk Fey'lya dies.

Though he was incredibly useful in Rebellion.

Great damn game.

I love each series for what they are.

I really enjoyed reading about the technology and aliens in Star Wars, but its been a while. I got more into the series when the special editions were released, since I had only watched a home recorded copy of episode IV before that. I had a shitload of toys and a subscription to a Scholastic Star Wars book club with monthly magazines and a book that was like a single-player tabletop RPG.

I've drifted more into Star Trek since then. I watched TNG and Voyager religiously until a summer job. During college I shared an apartment with a Trekkie, who was also a theatre/film student grad, so he pointed out a lot of subtleties in Star Trek that I never would have really noticed on my own.

I still watch Star Wars at least once a year, but I've seen very little of the Star Trek series and movies, so I'll be actively watching them sooner.

Well, that ST game looks pretty interesting. Kirk and Spock doing some cool double teams.

TNG was cool. The funny thing was how far advanced on the graphics things were between the original series and TNG. It you catch the original series, you'll notice that a lot of "stone" or "rock" structures were sheets or paper mâché. So damn hilarious!

I love both franchises for different reasons.

I wouldn't say either of them is my favourite franchise, but they're certainly among my favourites. I've had a load of toys from both and own a reasonable video game collection from both, as well as having every available aspect of two franchises on DVD. I actually have a model of the Consular Class Cruiser from SWTPM on my desk, a sand crawler next to my landline and the JJPrise on top of a DVD cabinet - plus a Voyager phaser on my TV stand. I did have little die-casts of the TOS Enterprise and the Enterprise-D on display as well, but sadly the weak stands for those broke.

I honestly find it quite hard to put into words why I do enjoy them equally. Star Trek is a Space Opera and Star Wars is a saga. They're both really rich science fiction experiences and they're both enjoyable.

I disagree there, Star Wars has the Expanded Universe and Star Trek has Soft-Canon. I've got quite a lot of Star Trek books and most of the time they are enjoyable (I could not get through Articles of the Federation, that one bored me to sleep) and add some really nice content to the soft-canon of Star Trek. You'll hate me for this though; My favourites are the series of books that follow on after Voyager ended. There are four of the fifteen Star Trek books written by Christie Golden that do an amazing job of sorting out the loose ends left by Endgame Pt I & Pt II.

I also really like the String Theory Voyager novels and the multi-era Gateway novels were excellent.

*Is pretty happy with the above post until Voyager was spotted*

What is it about Voyager that you dislike? While I do enjoy it to a lesser degree than the other series, my only beef with it is that they throw around a lot of fluffy starship words (especially the engineering crew) to the point where it feels like they're trying to remind you you're watching a sci-fi series. Also, as much as I like the look of Seven in that catsuit, there were times it aggravated me that it was such an obvious sexual pull.

I'm really hung up on what to define Star Wars as now. I came to see Star Trek as adhering to a more strict definition of science fiction and Star Wars as a space opera.

Science fiction is speculative innovations in technology and science, whereas I always thought of space opera akin to what I would describe as fantasy in space. Up until George Lucas decided to redefine some things in the new trilogy, Star Wars featured an unseen, unexplainable force manipulated by people using laser swords in an era of blasters and rifles. The focus was less on the possibilities that lay beyond our reach, and more on action and drama.

While Star Trek could also be defined as a space opera because it revolves around action and drama, I never thought of it as such because it is closer to the definition of science fiction. The tv series also deals with common science fiction subjects, like space exploration, first contact, and interspecies diplomacy.

Maybe it is easier to think of it as such because it deals with an Earth timeline? I never read too much of the Star Wars EU, but is there anything about the origin of humans in it?

Comparisons are inevitable, but, yes, are not really necessary. No one has really said they hate either one. They have all just stated a preference. It's like comparing chocolate cake to brownies. Anyone who hates either of those things, without some kind of food allergy, is just plain crazy.

WHATEVER STAR TREK SAID HIS DAD COULD KILL STAR WARS' DAD.

That's it! Me and my Yoda pen won't be writing you a Christmas card this year.

Can't beat, but I will match with my 3D puzzle of an Imperial Cruiser, which I bought to put together with my son whenever I had one and he'd old enough.

Since then, about a decade or two ago, my son will be turning 5 at the end of Sept, which he asked for a Star Wars themed party.

Another 3 to 5 years, and he'll be ready for the puzzle.

I don't buy SW memories, sir. I make them. :tophat:
