toxicitizen
So, this somehow doesn't have a thread yet! Feel free to discuss anything: the original, the PSP sequels or the anime series. If you're into SRPGs, this is one of the best PS3 exclusives, imho. The cell-shaded graphics look pretty great through the game's painting-style filter and the mix of turn-based and third-person make for some very addictive gameplay. I'm on the chapter 16 of the original right now, so I'm almost done with it. I plan on eventually picking up VCII, but I was wondering about something. If anyone has played VCII, did they address some of the balance issues of the original? Right now, I can beat pretty much any map in a turn or two by buffing up Alicia (or any Scout, really) with defense and evasion boosts and then just rushing the objective. It's very game-breaking, but once you're strong enough to do it, it feels kinda silly to even engage the enemy. What's worst is the ranking system is kinda broken and only takes into accounts how many turns it took you to win, so you're actually getting LESS XP by wasting turns fighting than you would if you just Scout rushed. :/ It's an amazing game, but that right there is a serious design flaw. Did they fix it in the sequel?
Mal
I take out the enemies anyways since that how I roll. Then after, I will come back to them to ace the mission with... you guessed it. Scouts with snipers support. I will try to take out whoever makes sense to bump up the money. So yeah, great great game. I haven't tried VCII since I don't have a PSP and because how it becomes so much more of a fan service fest. Besides... it doesn't have my bro Wilkins on the front seat. So yeah, its suffering from the same thing Disgaea sequels had me with... they don't have my bro!
toxicitizen
I know what you mean. When I found out that the Disgaea (and also VC) sequels weren't about the same characters, I was really disappointed. (Though from what I understand, VC3 is supposed to feature a bunch of the characters from the first one. I got a wallpaper of it for my laptop and the Edelweiss is on it.) Also, I have to say the characters in Disgaea 3 really grew on my over the course of the game. Well, except for Beryl. She can die in a fire, for all I care. Anyway, fan service doesn't bother me too much as long as the game remains good, I guess. I'll have to see if there's a demo for it on PSN. CorgiShinobi
I was thinking of this just this morning. I want to say first that VCII does have Welkin and Alicia and they do play more of a role than just a small cameo. It's not as great as the first, but it's a good sequel on a handheld that makes up for it's lack of large/epic missions with a lot of smaller side missions. I have yet to finish the sequel as I'm the type to try and explore. Spent too many hours, but I should get back to it and just gun it to the end. The first/original is a must for every PS3 owner. It is a strategy game that anyone can enjoy. As has been said, it's one broken element is the ranking system. It's something I fell was brought over by someone from Sonic Team because, like in Sonic, the amount of turns(time) determines that rank. So yes, all you need to do in most missions for an S rank is to buff up Alicia and have her gun-ho it. One mission requires you to have Welkin race to the tank, drive said tank through the enemy's gate, defeat the enemies guarding the post, and finally have a scout claim the post. It's the craziest and most nonstrategic plan, EVER! Alicia is still one of my favorite female leads.
Mal
Marina is best side character! <3 The love is sort of like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyWFe3UJIi0 She is one character that I will not allow to die. Speaking of dying... in this game it is rage quit worthy tier. However on some missions when you are playing for the first time, you just have to accept some loses because that Witch in Blue keeps on firing her beams of death after a hard fought battle to disable that damn tank. CorgiShinobi
Yes, I too have a fondness for Marina, a.k.a the best sniper in VC. And I kinda got a thing for chicks like her... but definitely not a preference.
MetalCaveman
Loved both games, they're awesome. \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ I've also heard a lot about scouts being overpowered but I never saw any of that, I always used all my units to complete missions because I thought scouts were really weak. Also, Marina is awesome! \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ I had a bit of a problem with VCII, don't know if it was the way I was playing or what, but I ran into a huge difficulty spike in a certain mission involving a dude who could kill pretty much everything in 1 hit. Still, it's a really fun game.
toxicitizen
I want to say first that VCII does have Welkin and Alicia and they do play more of a role than just a small cameo. It's not as great as the first, but it's a good sequel on a handheld that makes up for it's lack of large/epic missions with a lot of smaller side missions. Cool, thanks for clarifying that. One mission requires you to have Welkin race to the tank, drive said tank through the enemy's gate, defeat the enemies guarding the post, and finally have a scout claim the post. It's the craziest and most nonstrategic plan, EVER! I think I know which one you mean. I had a crazy hard time keeping my guys alive and fighting off the enemies because you start pretty much cornered in your base camp and have to wait until Welkin gets there before you can really do anything. But once I managed to break through and capture their secondary camp, I spent a few turns healing/re-supplying and calling back some of my fallen troops. Only to break through the huge gate and be greeted by.... a single fucking guy in the enemy camp >_< I swear, I wasted at least 5 turns only to face that one guy Oh and that Marina video pretty much sums up my experience with the character When I started playing again about a week ago, I was on Chapter 7 and I lost two lancers during that mission but ultimately finished it. That made me reluctant to restart, so I just cut my losses and moved on. But there are some characters that I will simply not allow to die. Marina, obviously, but also my back-up sniper Cezary, Edy and Homer, the only engineer I use. One time I lost a good hour of progress on a mission because a stupid move I did killed Marina. That sucked.
CorgiShinobi
It's Chapter 8-2 In the comments, someone mentions you can complete this in one turn, which is possible. However, it requires you to have Lv. 14+ Scouts, and so you're still using the Scout method. The two turn method is a bit safer, but it's still crazy stupid. toxicitizen
Just finished Chapter 17. Man, that was a rough one! That first look at the map is pretty overwhelming. For at least half of it I was convinced I was going to fail but around turn 12 I managed to get a strong enough foothold and start really hurting them. The mission ended on turn 18, so it was a close one. I wasn't planning on finishing the game tonight, but when the page turned and it was all cutscenes I figured there wasn't going to be another mission, so I started watching the episodes. Then the page turned again and now there's a mission. Guess I might as well try and get it over with. Edited June 18, 2011 by FLD
indyit
Such an awesome game. I wish I had a PSP, or rather I wish the sequels had come out for PS3! I loved Marina too, she's the best sniper there is.
FredEffinChopin
The scouts certainly do become forces to be reckoned with after a certain point. Was any real explanation given as to why the sequels came out on PSP instead of PS3? I was beyond dismayed with those announcements, but took comfort in the fact that it would probably eventually work its way back to my big screen... I'm still waiting on that. But yeah, any time I hear about a new PS3 owner looking for games, this is always among the first I recommend. It gets so much right. Next to Metal Gear Solid 2 and (possibly) MLB the Show 09, this is probably the demo I wasted more time on than any other before I finally got myself a copy. And in the case of MLB, that was during a period of a few months where my PS3 wasn't reading discs and I was restricted to content on the HDD. SanaEquiesterer
I'm reviving this thread because I finally got a PSP last month. The first demo I downloaded was VCII, but I'm a little hesitant to purchase the game because of the impression I'm getting from the new cast. It looks like the new characters might really play into the stereotypical high school roles. I stopped watching a lot of anime for this reason and I'm wary of the VCII experience being a grating one if I'm seeing characters I've already seen a million times. Can anyone who's played it confirm or deny my suspicions?

「Advent Chaos」
I'm actually surprised some people have lost units! I only did once and it was mostly me testing how many turns it would take for a unit to die permanently. Freesia York and hot damn did I restart, I love her character design. I think it's the hair. I stopped using Snipers after The retaking of Bruhl , I mean I would still deploy at least one, but wouldn't really use them and since there are no Main Character Snipers that don't provide an extra Command Point (Alicia, Rosie, Largo) I opted for deploying an Engineer for their Healing and Ammo restocking capabilities. Claudia, Nadine and Dallas were my favorite Engineers, but my Squad was usually made up of Scouts and Vyse & Edy. I recommend you guys buy the Design Archive, it's absolutely lovely and worth the money. It's obvious that most creative energy went into Alicia, but all the content makes it amazing. Mister Jack
Shit, I just discovered that Valkyria Chronicles II isn't in the PSN store. Guess I won't be playing it, then, since I only have a vita now.
TheMightyEthan
Supposedly even though you can't see it in the Vita you can still buy it on PS3 and then transfer it to your Vita and it will work.
Mister Jack
How sure are you about that?
TheMightyEthan
I haven't done it myself, but I've read numerous other places that it works. http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/961429-valkyria-chronicles-ii/62190413 http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/29022407/e3.gamespot.com http://forums.gametrailers.com/Son-F183/Vit-F25/Val-T1280647/?p=36916839#p36916839 http://www.flickr.com/photos/snappy/6848454127/ http://cabbitwolf.wordpress.com/2012/05/06/vita-has-valkyria-chronicles-2/ Again, I haven't done it myself so I can't personally vouch for it, but the general consensus seems to be that you can transfer it from PS3 to Vita, you just can't download it on Vita directly. Strangelove
Ive never done it either, but there are tons of websites that verify it. US by the way. Im not sure about other regions. There are cases where one game works only in certain regions, so you might want to look that up before you buy it.
deanb
I was playing the mission against Maximillion and his tank, one Ethan seems to be having issue with, and my sister turned the console off. Whether on purpose or accident I'm unsure of, but it was sure annoying. So got that level to do again probably tonight.
TheMightyEthan
I played about halfway through that level, got frustrated with how little progress I was making and quit. I also don't like having to grind in games, so that probably contributes because I haven't done any skirmishes. To avoid the turn-off problem in the future, you should do what I did and save at the end of every turn.
Mister Jack
That tank mission is probably the hardest one in the whole game, so the good news is that once you finish it the rest is mostly downhill, with one or two exceptions.
CorgiShinobi
The tank in... Chapter 6, right? (In the desert, etc) Yeah, there's a spike in difficulty there where placement and all those abilities of each soldier are vital. It's been forever since I've played the game, as much as I love it still, but I do remember the time I finally beat that mission. Freaking Lancers were key, but then... Well, no spoilers. Mal
That is the only mission where I lost anybody. Also... sacrifical units.
