Shameless Gaming Month

I'm working on Killzone 2 right now. I think I'd enjoy it a lot more if I could use my 360 controller and adapter instead of the DS3 because of it's retardedly loose sticks and giant deadzones, but mandatory sixaxis actions make that impossible. Still liking it though. Feels similar to Call of Duty. I really wish I could set it to let me use the left trigger for iron sights though.

Finished Killzone 2 today, now I'm working on inFAMOUS.

I liked Killzone 2 quite a bit, but there were a few parts where OH MY GOD, just give me another fucking checkpoint. I'm okay with games being hard, but I don't like it when failure at one part means I have to redo a long period before that part, over and over and over again. There was also one difficulty spike on the train involving a tank that made me want to stab someone, but other than that I really liked it. The train one wouldn't have been too bad if my ally was even remotely competent, but oh well.

Finished Infamous 2, so marked it out. Also added Dead Space 2. Not sure why I neglected to put it on there originally.

*Edit* - Also straight-up removed a few games that I got for free from PS+ and so decided they don't really count toward my "backlog" since I didn't buy them. Infamous 1 & 2 should have been in that category, but I'm keeping them since I already finished them, and because I downloaded them because I actually wanted to play them, not just because of slight passing interest like the others.

So, as we near the end of this month of shameness, I thought I'd update you with news on the games I focused on finishing this month. I set out to finish three games by the thirty-first and have not held myself to that. For those of you who clearly care about this more then me I say: "... sorry?"

Allow me to explain.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PS3): I purchased this game at the start of the year. I began the game playing as a psuedo-pacifist stealthy dude (I would sneak about and try not to kill, but would if I was caught or surrounded) who dabbled in hacking. This was how I played until I lost interest and left it for a few months. Bad move. Upon picking it back up, I had forgotten most of the major and minor plot points, as well as the characters. This was not helped by having a newly acquired distaste for stealth gameplay, as I attempted to take a somewhat more traditional FPS approach to gameplay with a character who was not kitted out to do so. Needless to say, I grew tired within a few hours of play-time and abandoned it again.

If I were to play this again, I'd start from scratch. At least that way I'd know what's going on.

Half Life 2: Episode 1 (PC): I had gotten this game as a free achievement award during last year's (2011's) Steam winter sales. This game does not hold up. The objectives you're given for the first few chapters of the game are "Go here, talk to a dude for a while[rather, get talked to], go there." During my time playing this month, I played through the chapters Highway17 and some of Sandtraps, which are chapters substantially lacking in narrative, differing locations or anything remotely fun. Hell, that's pretty much a valid description of most of the game I played.

I'm most certainly not going back to this game or the rest of it's series, even if the fabled 3 chapter/title-game comes out.

Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery (iPhone): I'm unsure as to exactly when I picked up this game, but it was some time ago. Unlike the last two games, I really enjoy S:S&S. The only reason I have yet to finish it is that it literately takes an entire lunar month to play. Two of the items-of-high-import in this game can only be collected during the dark phase and light phase of the moon, which coincidentally line up with the middle and end of this month, respectively. Yes, I know I can just set my phone's date to match, but come on, this lines up way too well to 'cheat.' Since I've yet to finish it, and plan to in a couple of days, I'll reserve judgement.

I think I'll be able to get The Last Story finished before August begins. I got stuck into it last night and played it until the wee hours of this morning. I battled through the final boss battles, dying right on the last sequence. At that point, I decided to turn it off and get some rest but that little push tonight should do the trick. I'm a bit disappointed by the length of the game, I have to say. I'm just closing in on 27 hours.

Anyway, even though it's still been a pretty shameful month of gaming for me, I'll be happy to be able to put The Last Story back on shelf.

How does one game ruin 2 other games that are in the same genre but not related?

It had an excellent story (Spec Ops), and Crysis 2 and Syndicate have bad stories. Couple that with terrible FOVs, bland shooting, and suddenly Crysis 2 and Syndicate sort of have nothing going for them. Not that Spec Ops: The Line had this fantastic gameplay or anything, but the story was good enough to easily make up for that. Crysis 2 and Syndicate, although they're not terrible, just seemed mediocre throughout, even though their mechanics were better than Spec Ops in some areas.
