P4: Gritty Reboot
Can't believe I couldn't find a topic for this. Anyway, whipped this up over on Press X or Die and was curious what your guys' wishes/predictions were for the next Half-Life installment.http://www.pressxordie.com/2011/06/28/half-life-3-wishlist/
Yantelope
It seems these days just wanting HL3 in and of itself is something of a wish. I predict that Half-Life 3 will be the next major piece of vapor ware. The more I've thought about HL3 the more I've had to realize that Valve has just been making it up as they go along this whole time and they have no idea how to tie things together or finish the story and as such the game will never be finished. Vargras
Honestly, I'm expecting a new engine to go with HL3 (whenever it comes out). Source was released a good six years ago or so, and despite being incredibly robust, it is starting to show its age a little.
deanb
Oh if we're talking old engines don't forget Modern Warfare 3 is still using the original Modern Warfare IW Engine*. And most games still running on Unreal Engine 3 and that's as old as Source. (of course what you're missing with Source and Unreal is that they are upgraded. Unreal just had the recent "Samaritan" upgrade and Source to Source 2011 with the release of Portal 2. You may notice that when Portal 2 came out that regardless of owning the game your other Source engine games updated too. They had a new one with Orange Box and L4D too) Still a new engine would be nice and it has been hinted at. *which itself is built off the id Tech 3 engine which powered the older COD games, Quake III and a bunch of other earl 2000's games. id Tech 4 came out in '04, 3 years before Modern Warfare. IW engine is trash.
P4: Gritty Reboot
From the beginning, Source was designed to be modular so they could turn games around faster (LOL). So they have replaced the shading and lighting and models and all that since the first game's release in 2004. Now, I'm not saying it will last forever or anything, but I'm not gonna sob too loudly if HL3 is released on an updated version of Source. Hot Heart
Boob physics. And a bit on a jet ski. Don't have to be related (but preferable if they are). Also, obligatory: http://www.hlcomic.com/index.php?date=2005-05-01 Edited June 28, 2011 by Hot Heart

CorgiShinobi
I should probably finish up the last bit of Half-Life 2. I'm at the part where I'm dodging huge laser attacks with Barry, or whoever it was...

WTF
You know speaking of game engines I wonder if we'll have a truly revolutionary engine like how the Quake engine was. I mean almost every game engine that exists today owes itself a lot to how modifiable the Source Engine was. I remember when the Unreal Engine came to being and it was different because it did more stuff with Glide and OpenGL (GLut was fun when I was at uni). I remember us tinkering around in LiSP during the AI part of our degree wondering if we could basically work out some good subroutines for AI, when in Soldier of Fortune for once the enemies actually decided to follow you up (till then in most FPS games you could just climb on top of something and they'd run around like muppets). The late 90s early 2000s was a good period to actually invest time into playing games and working on basic design since every game was improving things in massive ways. Not that games aren't improving things today, it's just mostly tweaks, some particle physics, better lighting and things that add to a 'cinematic' feel. There's not a lot of gameplay innovation or even AI innovation to make you go whoa that's a huge jump. yes there's tiny changes that are like improvements but nothing massively changing. On that note, I don't really expect much from HL3, just figure it'll be an improvement over HL2. But to be totally honest, I preferred HL1 and Opposing Forces to HL2 and honestly hated steam when it first came out as a DRM.

Vargras
In Source's defense, you can still do some pretty wild stuff with it. Like this guy!

Johnny
Gee, their work flow and hierarchy reminds me quite a bit of another game developer... If only I could remember the name. The guys who made Half-Life...?

Luftwaffles
http://imgur.com/a/ItaUQ#0 Black Mesa dudes are ramping up to a release now. Maybe I'm crotchety, but I'm finding it awfully hard to care about BMS right now. I was really hyped for it back in 2009, when it actually seemed like they were going to release it in the near future but a combination of Source aging quite a bit since then and well, 3 years have turned my anticipation into something more along the lines of "meh". When I have the game on my hard drive I'll be excited, but 3 or 4 screenshots with some nice lighting and textures or even a release date just doesn't quite get me excited about BMS anymore. P4: Gritty Reboot
I will play the ever-loving heck out of it, but I will try to keep the hype levels low.
