I'll give it to Sony, if it wasn't for me preferring the 360's controller like 10-1 over the ps3 controller [i mean who has triggers and doesn't use them for shooters? Because they're uncomfortable] and Halo, I would have jumped ship. Sad how truly, my love for Halo as my favorite multiplayer game ever is keeping me on the 360... and Alan Wake.... and a hope for a new Killer Instinct.... and XBLA.

The tension feels the same to me, but the 360 doesn't have enough deadzone in the middle. I actually had to retire the controller that came with mine because the miniscule play in the stick would cause the menus of games to go berserk frequently.

As for DS3 discomfort, I usually suggest not touching it with palms, but resting it on the fingers of open hands - like NES/SMS/SNES/Gen controllers. Won't fix it for everyone, but I'm amazed how many murder their thumbs trying to full-grip it like an XBox controller.

Yeah, I was talking about it on Kotaku years ago and someone was saying the placement of the sticks makes them impossible to use for shooters, and I figured out they were doing that. I tried it and it was pretty brutal after any length of time. Since then I've mentioned it once in a while and it seems to be a revelation to some people who didn't grow up with older systems without "handlebars" on the controllers.

I held it with my palms for the longest time until my wife of all people corrected me. I grew up with an NES, Genesis, and SNES, but I didn't get a PS2 until 2008 so by then I'd already had 12 years of training to hold it with my palms on the N64, Xbox and 360. I had had a PS1 previously, but that was a long time ago and I'm guessing back then my hands were small enough that it wasn't a big deal (that and far fewer games on the PS1 used analog sticks, I didn't even have a controller that had them). I was so happy after she told me how to hold it right though, because until then I couldn't play PS2 games for more than about an hour before it really started hurting my wrists.

I voted DS3, as it's the ultimate evolution of the SNES (and therefor NES) controller. I like the sticks layout, having the d-pad swapped on the 360 controller never made sense to me, I like the triggers better on the DS3 as well. Having a little bit of motion control AND rumble is great too. Hopefully Sony doesn't ever feel the need to mess with it again!

So some uni research group folks have come up with a new tactile feedback in controllers. Basically little nubs in the tops of the thumb-sticks to provide feedback beyond the usual vibrate. Have a read n watch the video.

360. I wish it had the triggers from the original Xbox, those required more pressure and had more travel distance. More latency, but they just felt better. I still remember when I first tried the 360 and squeezing the hell out of the triggers until I loosened up my grip a bit. Obviously, the dpad sucks, but I've played with some that are worse than others. I don't have too much trouble with mine. I think the Wiimote's dpad would be awesome on the 360 pad. I don't have trouble with the bumpers unless I'm at a friend's or I use the one that I... dropped... then they just don't work at all. I also like the weight of it. I like heavy things: pens, guitars, watches. For controllers, it all started with the N64 with the rumble pak. Slap a chatpad on a wireless 360 pad and I'm in heaven.

The D-pad on the 360 is terrible, but the sticks have the right resistance in them, they don't feel loose, and I love the way it rests in my hands. So I have to go with the 360 pad.

The DS3 is absolutely second, but I with the sticks felt more like the 360s and the triggers were actual triggers. I like the way they are for driving games, but they just feel too squishy most of the time. The DS3 just seems to cramp my hands up after longer play sessions.

EDIT: As far as the stick placement goes, I'm on the same page as FDS, I never notice that they are in a different place, I just manage to not notice it.
