Man, lots o' Gamecube controller hate. Those of us with refined tastes know better of course. :tophat:

Indeed and lots of 360 controller love that was quite unexpected on my part. I mean, it's a decent little controller I suppose but it's not my favorite. The 360's D-Pad is about as useless as the Gamecube's D-Pad. I think the Gamecube's grips and triggers are better than the 360's as well.

I'm also not getting the "tumor" hate on the wireless 360 controller. It never bugged me when I used it, plus I like controllers that use standard batteries. I know it will be annoying when my sole DS3's battery dies.

I might be biased since it was my first console, but the Super Nintendo Controller has always felt great, mainly it's D-Pad and Y button. It fit perfect in my hands as a kid and now a days it still feels pretty comfy, also as a kid I used to think it was modeled after a boombox.

I remember freaking out when I saw the N64 controller, I mean just look at it. "SO MANY BUTTONS! SO MODERN AND FUTURISTIC WHAT DO I DO!?" Then I got Super Smash Bros and everything was Super cool. Didn't really like analog sticks back then, but it was never an issue and the "Z" Button was just awesome, my imagination would go wild pretending I was holding a joystick for an airplane (I was a dumb kid, shut up).

I'm surprised at the love the 360 and DualShock controllers are getting! I knew there was a reason I liked you guys! My only qualms for the 360 are it's D-pad and SOMETIMES how the ABXY buttons feel, for some reason I don't like how they feel whenever I play anything that isn't Bayonetta. Also the naming for "Left & Right Bumper", after living through years of "L & R" buttons it still throws me off when I read instructions and the word "bumper" comes up, I always think of a pinball bumper and press the triggers instead. I love the Dualshocks, even the 3rd's L2 and R2 feel cool with me, but that may be because I don't play many shooters that use those as firing triggers.

Gotta talk about the Gamecube really quick, I love it! The buttons feels great, L & R are different, but feel okay. The Z button once again feels great (as it was on the N64), it always felt like the "Activate NUKE" button. D-pad and C-stick were probably the weakest parts of it, oddly enough anyone who played Melee loved using the C-stick. To me it was all about using the Analog stick and A for a charged up "Meteor Smash!"

And this is for you :P

SOI SOI SOI SOI

I miss old Arby 'n' the Chief. Actually helped write an episode for a friend to make and surprise his now girlfriend with. He was going to say it was a new episode and then, after a while, she'd obviously realise that it wasn't. Problem is, it looked too good. :P

They're still together, coming up to two years, so that's pretty cool. B)

The Gamecube controller was stupidly comfortable. I could play Smash Bros. for hours and never have my hands cramp up or anything. The D-pad was kinda derpy, but I did like the C-stick (and it was great for pulling off easy smash moves in Smash Bros.). And as someone else said before, Wavebird is probably the pinnacle of wireless controllers. Me and my buddies always fought over who got to use it.

I'm gonna go with the Dualshock 3, with the 360 controller a close second.

The only thing I truly dislike about the DS3 were the triggers, which was solved by buying those plastic clip-ons. I also like the weightlessness of it. Makes playing much more effortless in my opinion.

I find the 360 controller to be far too bulky, and the battery tumor on the back (yes, Yante just invented that term) really annoys me. D-pad is crap, and the bumpers are, to put it simply, uncomfortable. Games that rely very heavily on shoulder buttons (like Demon's Souls) would be an absolutely disaster with those bumpers. And strangely enough, I prefer the DS3's looser joysticks for shooters. The stiffer sticks on the 360 makes me less accurate at shootin'-and-tootin' than the 360.

So yes, DS3 for me. I also liked the GameCube controller just because of the epic rumble on that thing. That thing shook like no other.

There's a lot of mention of D-pads being crap, especially the 360, and yes it is crap but I'm struggling to think of any game where it matters that much. I rarely use the d-pad at all beyond switching weapons in Gears of War and similar for which it does the job. So are all you guys just going against it on principle or am I just missing out on some d-pad extensive games? With the exception of fighting games which I don't really play (but at the end of the day any fighting control pales in comparison to an actual fighting stick) I can't think of any myself but feel free to enlighten me.

Edit: On an unrelated note, I'm used to playing Fifa on my mates PS3, earlier today though I played it on another mates xbox and I definitely felt more comfortable playing the xbox version. Maybe they were using slightly different settings but it certainly felt to me like using the 360 controller upped my game a bit.

Pac Man CE sucked using the D-Pad or the analog stick. Again, it's a game better played with a stick, though.

Dualshock. Owned a PS1-3. Never owned an Xbox. Put it down to indoctrination, Stockholm syndrome, whatever. It's the one I always use, so other controllers feel odd.

KB/M is better for some games, FPS and RTS being two prime examples, but the Dualshock is better for FPS than KB/M is for Racing games.

The Duke!

...but seriously, I like the 360. I do with it had a better D-pad but the analog sticks are way better than the DS3 and the triggers are way better than the DS3. It's also long overdue for the DS3 to switch the D-pad position like the xbox did. It would be nice if they'd get rid of the battery tumor on the 360 and use a li-ion like the DS3 though. I actually think the D-pad on the DS3 is a little overrated. The SNES will always be the pinnacle of D-pads. Hasn't the patent on that run out? Why can't we have that on the xbox controllers? Why is it so hard to make a decent D-pad?

Everything you just said. For realz.

Gamecube - Likes: Comfort, buttons, sticks. Dislikes: No L1 button, Z button too small

Dualshock - Likes: Sticks and buttons, versatility. Dislikes: Non-staggered stick layout

360 - Likes: Great sticks and triggers, comfort. Dislikes: D-pad, bumpers, the tumor

Wiimote/Nunchuk - Likes: I can spread my arms apart, pointing, decent stick. Dislikes: D-pad hard to reach, missing some buttons

Super Nintendo - Likes: Awesomeness. Dislikes: None

I liked the gamecube controller too. I think its biggest problem was that mapping multi platform games onto its buttons sucked. Soul caliber 2 comes to mind.

I didn't have an issue with SC2 but standard fighting games were an issue for it. For games designed for it, it worked great. I mean, I can't imagine playing Pikmin with a 360 controller.

Yeah, the games that were made for it worked great. Zelda comes to mind as well.

Isn't that true of Nintendo hardware generally? First party stuff is great and uses the hardware to the max, third party struggles to make any impact because Nintendo kept the hardware under wraps until 6 months before launch.

I was just thinking more about how mutliplatform games tend to follow the standard 4 buttons, 4 shoulders, dual tumbsticks model which the GC kind of threw away. It's hard to do proprietary controllers without alienating multiplatform titles.

Which is why I simultaneously appreciate and abhor multiple controllers for a system. The Wii supports Wiimote, Wiimote sideways, Wiimote + nunchuck, Classic Controller (and Pro), and the Gamecube controller. It's great that some games (like Smash Bros and Mario Kart) can be designed to work around multiple schemes. On the other hand, it means more stuff to buy, own, store etc.
