P4: Gritty Reboot
Curious who's got what musical talents around here? I play bass mainly, some poor guitar and piano as well. Here's me kickin' it old school style, laying down the grooves hot n heavy: Here's the bass I have, approximately. I need a new one: I would someday like to learn the cello, as well. INB4 Hairy banjo. No, I used to be able to play a little piano by ear but I lost it over the years. Also, you look like Dante from Clerks. o_O
deanb
I am the music man, I come from down your way and I can play What can you play. I play the piano. Pia-pia-pia-no, pia-no, pia-no; pia-pia-pia-no, pia-pia-no (Well the keyboard, and not overly good, due to space restrictions I've not had it with me at Uni so probably lost all I had learnt with it.) Mr. GOH!
I play the piano, cello and the various clarinets. I am far and away the best at the cello.
Hot Heart
This is probably known to most people but I play bass. Have done for years but I've never had any lessons. Maybe of interest to other players, I've been playing tuned down a step for a long time. Firstly it was because a friend suggested it after seeing Reel Big Fish did it for live shows but I got used to it and it does mean you get a few 'extra' notes lower down the guitar (a low D usually comes in handy) while I've never needed the highest stuff you sacrifice. Wanted one of these for a long time but they're really hard to get hold of in the UK and I can't really justify the cost right now: I actually really wish I'd started learning keyboard or guitar when I was younger but I guess my parents had never shown an interest in that stuff themselves so it was only when I was 17 that I decided to start learning bass after listening to The Offspring and Less Than Jake and other punk/ska stuff EPIC BAND-RELATED POST INCOMING I play in a couple of bands in different 'forms'. Oldest band is Sucks To Be You, which is a pop-punk/ska band started with a couple of friends way back in 2002 when the drummer and I first started learning our instruments. We've played a few gigs while supporting another band I was in (Muck Fe) but we're not great. We hardly play now and the drummer never really kept at practising. Some recordings from 2008: http://www.facebook.com/stbyband?sk=app_178091127385 A live performance from our first gig (love the chorus lyrics) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mb-lf6oe2V0 I am also currently helping Monster Movie record an album. They describe themselves as a sort of 'indie dreampop' band but either way it's certainly a departure from what I normally play and a nice challenge too. It's about keeping things simple rather than taking a lead like in the other bands. They've never played live but have released a fair few albums over the years and seem quite popular in certain parts of the world. We've got some stuff recorded but I shouldn't share it since the album's not out yet. I can provide this cover we did for an EP though (warning: it's a large file for an MP3) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9621731/01%20Stars%20Fall.mp3 And up until recently, I'd been part of punk/ska band Muck Fe since 2009. The lead guitarist/singer is at uni and has decided to focus on his other band because he wanted to start 'taking it seriously' and felt Muck Fe weren't doing that after the drummer let him down. We'd played a fair few gigs and I loved being part of the band. All the guys were fantastic at their instruments and we could've done great things but now this guy has started a reggae band which, no offence to the genre, is a waste of his talents. I was never on any of the self-produced albums but they can't compare to the live stuff, especially when we used to improvise little bits. Just a shame we never got any proper recordings. If only his new band sounded half as good as this. B)
jayc4life
I play a bit of guitar, but that's about it.
Connorrrr
I played piano in school, haven't played in a long time though, I'm very rusty.
WTF
I could've sworn we had a thread on this before... Anyways I play bass when I jam with friends (haven't done so in about a year). Played a JS2CH regular. I'm looking to get this sometime in the next 12-15 months if I can get a factory discount by reconnecting with an old contact -.- I've learnt the piano, can play the keyboard, learnt to play drums as well. Music lessons always conflicted with tap dancing classes... I don't play professionally but I can still jam with friends. Every tiny band I've been has always broken up due to people literally having to move between countries. These days if I do work on sound it's just on the engineering side for post-pro work on films. AMS Neve with Protools = Bliss (if you're into it of course).
MetalCaveman
I play guitar and piano, I also own a drum kit, but I never learned how to play that, however, after watching dudes like Derek Roddy I kinda want to try and actually learn about that stuff. Only instrument for which I actually took lessons is the piano, but since it conflicted with my school schedule I stopped with that, guitar is pretty much self-taught since I prefer that method than having to deal with schedules and stuff. Currently trying to get one of these: After that maybe I'll actually record something. Currently own: Old Yamaha PSR-260 Squire Strat Don't know the brand or model but it looks like a Strat except with a Humbucker in the bridge position. Drum kit. Hot Heart
I have down-tuned as low as C before to get that nice rumble, a technique common in doom metal and other metal genres. I've always felt my guitar wouldn't accomodate a string tuned that low, that it would just sound wrong regardless of what gauge you got. I know 5-strings usually have a thick ol' B string! Is that just for the lowest string? I know drop D is popular but I actually tune the whole thing down. FredEffinChopin
Drums. Self-taught, and it shows in ways. I no longer own a kit, sold it a few years ago when I felt that I was neglecting it, and was pretty much done playing with (shitty) bands. I only starting playing again last summer when, pretty much simultaneously, I began to play Rock Band at home (I sincerely hope that's the geekiest confession you'll hear today), and a friend of mine was looking for a drummer for some casual jamming. I've been playing here and there with two different groups since then. It's good to be back.
TheFlyingGerbil
I play the clarinet and taught myself the piano. I haven't played either for years though, which makes me sad when I think about it, but I don't often think about it I've no reason not to play the clarinet, but when I came home from university one time to see my piano hacked to bits in the garden by my parents I had that decision made for me! I'd love to get an electric piano, but I never found one that felt enough like a piano to justify the expense. I did try to learn the flute once but I was allergic to the nickel in it, making my nose run and my lips tingly.
Gyaruson
I play drums. Have for about 10 years now. I don't own anything fancy, because I don't see it as a viable money-making opportunity, but I am pretty damn good. At least I like to think so.
