The Last Guardian

Actually there's a little more to that story than reported. The current head of SCEJ was the head of Sony Santa Monica for over 10 years. He saw the development of God of War, Twisted Metal and a bunch of other games. He was asked by Shuhei Yoshida to take charge of SCEJ so that they'd be more timely and come out with better results and other things. he took over in 2011 I think.

All these changes are probably the result of him trying to make it into a much more organised group. SCEJ has been quite lacking the last 5 years or so. Considering he was the head of SM it's quite likely he'd get most of the California based studios to assist due to his close relationship.

I think what we're seeing is the direct result of new leadership at SCEJ.

Getting other studios to input is not necessarily a sign of trouble. DICE chipped in with NfS Hot Pursuit, partly because they know Frostbite 2 inside and out, but also because you might as well have a separate team working on the background scenery while your racer guys focus on the cars and stuff.

Similarly DICE developed the MP for Medal of Honor (personally I think that's an example where it didn't work so well) but it wasn't done because Danger Close were in trouble. It just seemed like a good idea at the time. :)

If the other studios are lending technical support (this is Team Ico's first PS3 game after all) or are coding some of the background stuff, then it's just a sensible allocation of resources.

That said, they could be in deep trouble and the other teams are being drafted in to shore things up.

I wish I knew more about video game project finance, but it seems like the Last Guardian would have to sell a metric fuckload of copies to make money, assuming that it's had a decent-sized core team working on it for the past 50 years or whatever.

Also, just watched that trailer Dean posted for the first time. It's a bold choice to make the player character look like he's in a PS2-era game while everything else looks current-gen.

You mean Zeno's paradox? I look forward to when Sony's Twitter feed is entirely announcements that The Last Guardian has been delayed for another picosecond.

Edit: because I am a pedant, it's Achilles and the tortoise, not Hercules and the tortoise.

Yeah, according to Digital Foundry it runs like balls on a standard PS4, between 20-30 fps, and not much better on a PS4 Pro at 4k.  They say the only way to get actual stable performance is on a PS4 Pro in 1080p mode.

*Edit - Though at the end they do say it still runs better than SotC did on the original PS2, and I loved the shit out of that game even then, so it probably won't be a dealbreaker for me.
