deanb
The issue is that I now have a job lined up. But it doesn't start fully for a couple weeks (I've some odds n sods to do tomorrow though) because it's kinda requiring the office to be gotten that I'd be working in. I'd be working for a small software company a friends dad started a year or so ago. Me and coding don't get on, so my friend, his dad and another friend will be doing that. I'm computer literate enough to do everything else, thus leaving them to code. (so QA, admin, reception ,research etc). So yeah this is all pretty much in the bag. So I go to my fortnightly sign-on, expecting to go "well I've a job, what's next". However instead of going to my normal guy n saying Iv'e got a job I was taken to a woman and told that the Job Centre are starting a scheme for 18-24s that involves me going to a mandatory event next Monday to watch various "job providers"(local business, army, college) give presentations, then going around their stalls and signing up with an "action plan". Then on Tuesday going into the Job Centre again to talk with another guy about the action plan I'd chosen, as well as giving feedback on this new event*. So yeah, I've mentioned I've a job lined up, and they're pushing me to sign up to another job through them, mandatory. So that's going to be fun. Even more is the bummer if I come across something interesting, the dilemma of do I go for it, turning down my friend and his dad, who have given me an opportunity where they didn't have to after I've been unemployed this long. Or turn down a potentially exciting career opportunity to fulfil an obligation to a friend. I've a feeling most members of the Job Centre would struggle to their arse from their elbows. It's all preset plans. Working off a sheet and policies. Pushing their numbers. (seriously they have something that's very much like a sales chart you'd expect at a used car shop.) *srsly, it's a new event. They've only just started on this. A fucking Job Fair. You'd think it'd be pretty much simple common sense for the Job Centre to have something like this? This is the kind of stuff I thought they did when I signed on. TheRevanchist
without posting it here I keep thinking about that English vs English thread: Spotted dick. Oh, the horror of it all! Another good tip about interviews. Make sure your shoes are tied and your zipper is up. Small things matter in an interview.
Battra92
Dress slutty at your next interview! My wife went to an interview for a promotion (well to move up in another department where she works) and she asked me about her choice of attire. I mentioned this at work today to point out how I know absolutely zero about fashion and one of my female coworkers said (direct quote) "Have her wear the one that makes her tits look biggest" Oh and obligatory: Another good tip about interviews. Make sure your shoes are tied and your zipper is up. Small things matter in an interview. True story: on the day of the interview my only dress shoes ripped. I fixed them with black duct tape and went on my way. No one noticed or they thought I was really hard up and needed the job. Either way, I've been there for five years now. Thursday Next
They were probably too busy looking at your dress to be phased by your shoes. @Dean, if you haven't already, you should talk to your dad and friend about career opportunities. See if they would be ok with you scaling back to weekends or a couple of hours in an evening. I'm sure your dad would rather you got on with a career than helped out him and a friend. You should never burn your bridges, and you shouldn't renege on a deal, but you've got to look out for number one. Sort of on this topic, by the way, if anyone is in the Guildford area between 1st July - 30th Sept and has a law degree (or preferably has done or is on the LPC), I'll be picking up an intern. It's only minimum wage (unless I can wangle more, just setting reasonable expectations), but I write a first class reference, and much as you might hate on EA, it looks pretty damn good on a CV. deanb
I may have worded something wrong, but it's not my dad and his friend. It's my friend and his dad. If my dad could have given me a job I'd have had one months ago Wanna know what doubly sucks? That event yesterday was actually good. Woot for giving us a feedback form to fill in. "Additional comments: Could have done with this 6 months ago". Also cos they don't let us out of the door until we've signed up with someone (and the army was there...eek), I'm now semi-signed up with Middlesbrough College on some burst course type thing. So now I've got to deal with declining that. Though I guess depending on how many hours I'm put down for initially with Ben's dad I could maybe do both, get qualification and experience. I put down my field of interest as IT. The courses are 16/hrs a week for 6 weeks.
Thursday Next
I read it wrong. Was editing a document at the time. Advice still stands though, you should talk to them about how committed you are to their project and how committed they are to you being part of it. If they're just doing it as a side project and aren't really fussed about how seriously it gets taken, then they shouldn't mind you stepping away from the business when your own career pops up. On the other hand, if this is what they're dedicated to, then they should look to formalising your involvement, as a minority partner, or an employee (probably the latter). deanb
It's his dads business, not a minor side project. Also I am being taken on as an employee. Heading over later half of this week with P45s n shit to get it done-done.
Battra92
They were probably too busy looking at your dress to be phased by your shoes. I was wearing a suit that they later told me that they commented on my suitcoat being too large for me. I had recently lost 25 lbs and didn't have the money to buy a new suitcoat. Maybe they thought I'd work cheap?
Thursday Next
I was going for a wordplay on dress shoes, as in shoes that you would with a dress, thereby implying that if you looked like this: A worn pair of smart shoes would have gone unnoticed.

deanb
So to reverse the topic a little: What's the best way to leave a job? i.e the differences between quitting, firing and redundancy (And if there's any others)
TheMightyEthan
I have no idea about the UK, but I know in the US if you voluntarily quit from a job then you can't get unemployment benefits.

P4: Gritty Reboot
Redundancy/being let go is best for getting benefits in the U.S. for sure.
Thursday Next
Depends on how you are leaving. I can give you a bit of a run down on your rights but it is very dependant on your situation, and may be a conversation better held in private... Thursday Next
I'm thinking that was an Oracle = Soothsayer / Prognosticator joke. As in "An entity with supernatural knowledge of everything would in all likelihood have foreseen your departure." Anyways, here's a way to get a job... If you can get to Guildford, are available from June to September and have a qualifying law degree, I've got a 3 month internship coming up. It's only minimum wage and short term unfortunately, but it's still a great opportunity, and much as many of you hate on EA, it'll look good on your CV and I write a kick-arse reference. Feel free to spread the word amongst your friends.
