How to get a job?

This is the best place to rant about this:

When someone calls from a potential employer, at least try to sound enthusiastic on the damn phone. I see your resume, and it looks fantastic. But, I'm not going to hire someone who is a debbie downer or a negative nancy.

You don't have to be confident, just pretend to be, damn it.

This is what helped me get a job, actually. Went in all self-confident and decisive and got the job the next day.

Ive been in a few group interviews and im almost certain being overenthusiastic and self confident will get you the job.

I personally find that kind of ego driven type annoying, but employers seem to love it, no matter how fake it may be.

And I also dont think they really buy it. They know you dont feel that passionate about that job, but it still shows that youll try hard to show it.

I fail at interviews often because i try to be bright and positive, but im self conscious and dont want to overdo it to the point of being annoying. I try to balance it out.

It turns out employers love annoying enthusiasm. Then again, im easily annoyed. It just might be my problem.

So I'm doing kinda dandy at the moment (beyond the upcoming Xmas job as an elf sorting out packages for Xmas for all the kiddies and bills for the adults), setting in a few foundations for potential future employment. Had two half days at Newcastle College today after putting my name down for interest in an adult learning course couple weeks back at a jobs fair. Been filling forms and assessments, aced the literacy, numeracy and IT assessments but as expected had stumbling blocks on the "empro" (employability) stuff. This should lead on to starting a part time course in January.

As part of past two days session I was directed to an opening within the college doing pretty much what the course would aim towards, so fired off an application for that, which given how many boxes it ticks I'm rather hyped for (compared to the "applying cos I have to" ones that you do 99% of the time), so fingers crossed on that. Though the application process itself was a pain in the arse, filling out an oddly formatted word documents. Would have prayed for an online application and personality test by end of it.

Which contrasts sharply with an application I did last week where it was in 5 steps and pretty much just had me upload my CV, used this to auto-fill the following pages of information, then hit okay at the end and I was done.

heh. Just fired off an application to the same college. What a difference three months can make. (I clearly didn't get that job). Not long after past post I became a guinea pig for the northern roll out of this "CIPD Mentorship" scheme. So since late November I've been meeting with my mentor every 1-2 weeks discussing various application process, expanding pool of employers, working over CV, organising work experience etc.

That work experience was a pretty big thing, was at the IT Support dept. Same place I'm now applying for an apprenticeship role at. Apprenticeship does mean sub-NMW but comes with stuff that balances it out; being twice what I'm on with job seekers, it's a course so you get a qualification at the end of it, they'll likely take me on afterwards or failing that they're obligated to help me look for a job, and as it's a course it's also a guaranteed length of employment (unlike when it was Orion and was booted after 3 months with wibbly pay n all that). Also it's a 10-15 walk away so transport isn't an issue either unlike many other roles.

So yeah if you're in UK and are or know of any young unemployed get em to ask their Jobs advisor about the CIPD mentorship. My Jobs Advisor has pointed out it's essentially a head hunter scheme, which I guess is pretty true, but it's worked out/working out fine for me so far.
