Warhammer 40k: Space Marine

I did a search and couldn't find a topic about this game yet, so apologies if it was already made.

I'm seriously in awe at what Relic can pull off with the WH40K license. The Dawn of War series has been great, sure - but the Space Marine demo? I'm so pumped for the full game now. The demo is seriously the most fun I've had in gaming in a while. I mean, you're actually ENCOURAGED to stay in combat to get health back. Seeking out cover is a bad thing. And switching between melee and ranged fighting is seamless.

So the demo was fun enough just by itself, but throw in co-op and 8v8 multiplayer, as well as the beloved Army Painter from the DoW series? This game is gonna be great.

I recorded some gameplay footage from the demo so other folks can see what it's like. The jump pack is on display here, as are a small portion of the weapons (bolter pistol, bolter, stalker bolter, vengeance launcher, and the good ole' chain sword and power axe). It's still in the process of uploading to youtube, but I'll post it once it's done.

Due to the time limit on youtube, the footage of the campaign mission will be split into two parts. Jump pack demonstration is a single video.

I saw the Giantbomb Quicklook and I suddenly got a lot more interested in it. I probably won't be getting it at launch, but I'm definitely going to give the demo a shot and see if I can justify spending the $50 on it or just wait for it in a steam sale.

It looks great, but I'm a little wary of how the PC controls will handle as well. It definitely looks like it could work a little better on console.

Already "bought" it thanks to the Warhammer 40K Complete pack on Steam. :P

Unfortunately I can't play the demo on PC now since my current one won't run the game and I'm still missing a few parts for my new PC. :P

Will try the 360 demo tomorrow and then the PS3 demo later this week. :P

Love the Dawn of War games and this looks really fun too.

Also, anyone know if you'll be able to use a 360 controller on the PC version?

I played it on the PC, and it handled just fine for me. You can always tweak keybinds if needed.

You also got to be smart on how you kill your enemies since, you need to get up close and personal to heal up.

That's what kept getting me. Most games these days just have you hide behind cover to get health back, and I was sorta stuck in that mindset. Then I kept wondering why my health wasn't coming back as I hid behind cover.

There's only one way to get health back in this game, and that's with executions. You gotta keep fighting if you want a shot at healing.

Exactly. I can't help but back away from a huge horde, however, you just have to remember that is not how a Spacemarine wage war. Oh no... remember the stories and triumphs of the Spacemarines. How they stand their ground even when the whole planet turn hostile. All in the name of The Emperor!

... Yeah... get into that mindset and you're set. Though, not sure how much that will help if Necrons or Tyranids pop out from the woods...

Note: I never beaten a Warhammer 40k game but I sure do love the universe.

Gears of War is fun!

Looks pretty cool, and you do seem to have to be a bit smart about how you confront crowds, but I'm worried it would just get a bit samey. I've seen them showing other races in trailers but I don't know if that was just misleading marketing or not (as in, it's just showing all sorts of things a space marine faces). A friend said they saw Chaos in there; does anyone know if there is anything besides those and Orks and Goblins? I suppose the story would get a bit convoluted if they threw more in.

And it has the option to 'paint' your own armour? That's wicked.

Chaos dudes will appear. :P

Also, video about the armor customization stuff:

I played the demo last night. I wanted this to be good, but I certainly did not expect such a competent action game from a developer known for its RTS titles.

Also, for some reason, I thought the game looked amazing. Like, the graphics are pretty enough but mostly it's the scale of everything that struck a chord with me.

For example, when you first see the huge crane in the first level of the demo, it's simply humongous and it's right above you. I mean, it's not like it's the first game to have huge buildings in it, but for some reason here it seemed more impressive than it should. Probably because of the art style, I guess.

Yes, Chaos is in there too.

As for the armor customization, that's multiplayer only - something that Relic has been quite good at. According to the videos, there's apparently 1.8 billion combinations in the army painter, and you can individually customize each piece of the armor. Right boot, left boot, right pauldron, left pauldron, etc.

EDIT: I'll let Total Biscuit demonstrate it.

I have to admit, I did have some doubts as to Relic would actually make it good on the PC. After playing the demo, they have more than proved that they can. The controls on the PC feel natural and easy to use, and they got sprinting down to an art (as opposed to Gears of War where you could only sprint in one direction; which, honestly, was very awkward).

And the executions. Oh, man, the executions, especially with the power axe. Reminds me of why I love WH40K and more.

My only regret is that they didn't feature the Heavy Bolter in the demo, but it just gives me more reason to buy it.

I just gave hard mode a try. Not that hard but then again, this is the demo and I went through it like... five times already. Hard mode did give those near death moments a much greater satisfaction of surviving them. Hell, I ended an engagement with a melee slam which left a stunned survivor. I looked at him, he looked at me. He promptly roared back into a charge which ended with a single bolt in the face.

How fucking cool is that!?

So yeah... NO I WILL NOT GET THIS GAME NOW. I can't... but I wanna...

Played the demo (when I finally managed to get hold of it). Pretty good. Looks and runs well too which I wasn't expecting (One of the first things a paycheck will do is upgrade this PC. Damn 9600GT) I played with the 360 pad and it all went together pretty well. I was frankly amazed, as many others seem to be, at how well an RTS studio has put together a TPS. It played pretty standard, felt very Space Marine-y. Shame it was so short. Especially the jump pack segment.

I'm unsure if I'll be picking it up on luanch (not much of a TPS guy) but I'll certainly be looking into owning it at some point. Always a fan of Relic and Warhammer 40K titles.

Still a shame it's Ultramarines. I've come to quite like Blood Ravens, I thought they might have tried to have some continuation of Dawn of War.

The Blood Ravens are a selectable chapter for play in multiplayer (and you get a bonus skin for them if you preorder on Steam).

But I preordered it through Gamestop, because you score a bonus Space Wolves and Dark Templars skin.

Orks didn't feel Orky enough. For one they seem way too articulate and I had mistaken their shouting for my teammates at a few points. Also not enough dakka and shoota boyz are way too fucking accurate for orks.

I still enjoyed it, mostly because they live up to the signature "massive amounts of orks". And it's fun to punch gretchin and instantly kill them.
