I'm gonna spoiler this just because I know TCP is thinking about playing the game:

Naoto is obviously trans. The fact that the game tries to send the message that he needs to accept that he's biologically female and act his assigned gender is troubling to me. I respect that he feels like he should be male.

That's not to say he can't be a love interest for the PC, but I saw him just as another of my friends, like Yosuke.

I completely disagree with the theory that Naoto is a trans man who gets "fixed." You have to remember that the game takes place in Japan, a society which is still a bit behind the times when it comes to its treatment of women. What Naoto wants more than anything is to be a detective, but despite her skill she isn't taken seriously because the police force in Japan is almost completely dominated by men. Her shadow didn't accuse her of wanting to be a boy because she feels out of place in her own body, but because it would mean she doesn't have to struggle constantly to gain the respect of her peers. The lesson there wasn't that she should "act her role" but that she shouldn't have to change herself to suit the rest of the world. She's basically the opposite of Kanji. It's okay for Kanji to pursue traditionally feminine interests despite being a boy and it's okay for Naoto to pursue a traditionally masculine career despite being a girl.

That's my take on it, anyway.

I agree that's how it's presented, but I think that

that presentation actually kind of contributes to the heteronormative implications. Like, it's not even a possibility for Naoto to actually feel like a man.

I guess what really bothers me the most about it is that in the true ending epilogue Naoto had started dressing all girly. Like the game's saying sure, it's fine for Naoto to do a manly career or whatever, but she still had to be a girl.

I do get that a lot of this is cultural dissonance, and if this post is rambling it's because I'm still figuring out what I think about it. But the core of my original content is that the relationship I have to Naoto is like with a cool guy who just happens to have a vagina.

I may slightly disagree with you TME, but I can see/understand where you are coming from. And I respect it more than how some of the rest of the internet is acting that have a similar interpretation as you. And by that I mean some attack Atlus/Japan/creators as being

Transphobic/Predjudice against those who are trans.

Heteronormative/dissonace is more persuading than vitriol and anger. ESPECIALLY to those who don't see Naoto as being trans(on the other side of that coin are people that get angry at the mere suggestion that Naoto may be trans.)

I totally understand analyzing literature/movies/video games and coming to a conclusion that the character(s) really would rather be a man/woman. But some act as if Japan is trying to tell the LGBT to not exist.

If the creators didn't want Naoto to be a man and only wanted to show the gender roles as far as a woman wanting to do a more traditional male's career...than they didn't want him to be a man.

However...

That doesn't mean it can't strike a cord in society or be a trans issue.

So...TL;DR. I don't personally think Naoto is trans....but it's a very interesting conversation/thought provoking subject that I totally can see.

As far as the best girl: Chie. Best guy: Kanji/Naoto

Chie is really fun. Her antics during the Naoto/Kanji investigation and her kung-fu training really endeared her to me. And isn't the genki girl usually the most popular?

I was about to do the Christmas Eve event with Rise, I realized, no, this isn't right! I went with Chie.

And then you had to leave at the end. NOOOOOOO!

Chie also has this really cute vulnerable side you don't really see much of unless you are pursuing her romantically.  I believe it was the Valentine's Day event where she said something that just made me like her that much more.

"I still can't believe it...You actually chose...me. I'm so ordinary compared to Yukiko or Rise-chan or Naoto-kun, yet you chose me..."

Really loving how it looks. Seems like a massive improvement in presentation both in the dungeons and in the town exploration stuff.

Oh and, to no one's surprise, delayed to summer 2016. The best part is that until very recently they were still adamant about the whole "coming in 2015" thing. Lol.
