Nah, just fired it up to make sure and when you start a new game it warns you that you can't change it once you start. You can only change it once you get to NG+, at which point you can customize it and (I assume) change it at will. Maybe that's what you're thinking of, Jack?

Also, it's actually five difficulty settings: Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard and Very Hard. Personally, I'd recommend normal. Like I said, it wasn't very challenging. The game has this weird difficulty curve where it's actually more difficult early on because you have fewer party members and you can't replenish your MP. It gets easier later on to the point where most people recommend clearing the later dungeons in a single day, so that you have the rest of the month to focus on everything else.

I watched the IGN trailer analysis thing, everything so far is pretty cool.

Although there was a part in the trailer, at around 1:14, where the page tears and the guys assumed it was the new way to show dialogue/cutscenes. I don't know about that, but I don't think I'd like that. I think it'll end up being too distracting IF that was the case. Also, page tears should be saved for group attacks in combat or summoning personas, something cool. I don't know... Hopefully they're wrong there.

I'm utterly loving Persona 3 FES and you know what? It's heralding a return to the JRPG genre for me. I have literally never finished a JRPG and haven't even tried getting into one since I was about 12 or 13. I think I just didn't have the patience. But I feel like I'me getting it now. The whole thing. Nailing the mix between engaging with the mechanics and gradually pushing forward into tougher territory.

Thanks for the tips in my status update the other week, Tenshi & FLD.

There are only a couple of minor things I don't really get yet. I think I'm in the swing of it for the most part. Fantastic craic.

Tiredness is something which causes me a lot of bother. When a character gets tired, is it generally safe to keep on trucking through Tartarus? (Basically I'm asking if there are any longer-term/wider detrimental effects to being tired. Obviously it makes your character perform worse so I know to bow out whenever the stakes are getting too high.)

Is there any way to find out good Fusion Skills? I'm comfortable with fusing Personas at this stage, and it's totally worthwhile – but it doesn't tell you if you'll have a Fusion Skill available with them? Is this just trial/error?

Also, dat music.

Dat music.

Some of the best I've heard since Jet Set Radio. Bar some choons which are slightly too cheesy, but that's part and parcel of the whole thing.

Looks like P5 is set in Shibuya/Tokyo. Social links are back, if there was any doubt, and some dungeons won't be randomly generated.

It's interesting how they're bringing back guns and demons. At least, they sure seemed like demons in the trailer. I hope that doesn't mean negotiation is back too, though. That was the main thing I hated in the older games and in SMT since it's nothing but trial and error.

Oh, and don't worry too much about fatigue, Kenshi. Not your problem if your party members are being a bunch of bitches. I just wouldn't go to any boss fights with a party that isn't fresh. Aside from that you'll be fine.

It only happens when you go back to the first floor. Party members can also become sick, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't happen until after you leave and they'll be fine if you let them rest for a couple days, so get as much mileage out of Tartarus as you can in one night. The calendar does not give you a lot of free time to build up social links so you don't want to go to Tartarus more than a couple nights a week if you can help it. Considering that, it's not a big deal if party members get sick, although it does mean you can't work on their links until they're well, so you'll have to focus on someone else.

Yeah quality advice all round, thanks chaps

I've read elsewhere to push as far as possible in one night as a rule of thumb, so will do.

My main concern now is SP. I can push all night, sure, but I don't have very many/any SP-replenishing items. Is there any sure-fire way to get these?

You can trade gems at the antique store for SP items, but I'm not sure that's all that reliable.  Later on in the game you can also get skills or items that will regenerate SP for you, so just hold on a bit longer.  If you're exploiting weaknesses properly you should still be able to get a good amount of distance before you have to head back to 1F and someone leaves.  If you're really getting low, I would recommend just skipping as many fights as you can and make a beeline straight for the boss floor just so you'll have that progress.  You can always go back down on another day to grind or look for treasure.

Does this advice apply to P4G as well?

I don't believe characters get tired from the dungeons in P4, so you can stay in there for as long as you want.  I think you can buy SP items from the store in P4G, but I wouldn't advise it.  They're really expensive and the money is better used for other things.  Like I said above, just exploit weaknesses like you're supposed to be doing anyway and you should still be able to get a pretty decent number of floors in before you have to turn back.  Also, shuffle time has cards that will restore SP for you after fights, and if you're playing it right you should be getting shuffle time fairly often.

Not really. There's no fatigue in P4G but running out of SP is something that will artificially increase the length and difficulty of early dungeons. There's a way to spend money to replenish it at some point but it's overpriced and not worth it. Before long you'll be able to clear most dungeons in a single sitting, anyway.

Whoa, is 'lawyer' a front, Ethan? I think the secret message in the pseudonym is too specific to be a coincidence...

I don't know what you mean...

(This is not a coy "I don't know what you mean," I mean I actually don't understand what you're saying.)

Persona 3 FES has my by the goddamn throat

It's amazing fun. Suddenly the prospect of a 40+ hour JRPG – which in the past was one of the reasons I was apprehensive about even starting one – is really exciting and I can't wait to get through it.

Btw, I assume the game doesn't take place over one academic year, like I suspected? I'm level 15 at about month 6 and I know people level up into the 50s at least. Is it over 3 years?

No wait, don't tell me, just tell me if it's more than one year :)

I'm actually about 15 hours into the game as well – which is a pretty slow start. It feels like it just got going, really. I assume Persona 4 gains momentum far quicker, and this may be part of the reason it's rated above 3?

Well, I'll go ahead and answer those questions for you.

It's one school year.  However, if I recall correctly by the time I beat the final boss I was in the late 80s or early 90s as far as my levels were concerned, and I didn't go out of my way to grind much except at the very end.  It was the same deal with P4 for me, mostly because the most useful Personas in the game require really high levels.   I had put in over 90 hours by the time I beat P4, and I think I put in 70 or so with P3 but it's been a while so don't quote me on that.

P4 takes about two hours or so before you really even get past the intro, but most people feel that it's better paced because there's more than one dungeon and each dungeon is directly tied into the story as opposed to Tartarus, which is "explore the dungeon because I don't know!"  Still love P3, but P4 edges it out ever so slightly if you ask me.

Oh yeah, I also like P4's cast more.  I'm actually not that wild about P3's cast except for Junpei, who is a total bro.
