Fish and chips at a local place by my work. Nom'd it nice and slow since tonight I'll be having more leftovers from CNY... I think they changed their fish supplier and their batter a bit.

Are fish and chip shops common in the USA? I only imagine them being popular in the UK.

California-wise, fish and chips are practically nonexistent. Not sure about the other states (particularly east coast; I know of a few fish n' chip shops there), but California doesn't seem to embrace it that much.

I've had fish and chips before, though to say if they're actually good or accurate to UK fish and chips is probably a whole 'nother story.

Over here in Seattle, all burger joints, excluding chains, have to have Fish and Chips, so fish and chip shops in particular aren't too popular, but it's not hard to find fish and chips at all. There is ONE fish and chips place in Seattle, though, and that's Pike Fish Fry, which is very good. They have curry ketchup, which is the only condiment I will ever need for the rest of my life.

I've seen a few in the SF Bay Area.

One place that pretty much anybody can find is in that foodcourt in the lower level of the downtown Westfield mall. The one I had in my post is from Gamin's. I also seen one in the Westlake shopping center in Daly City and one on El Camino Real in San Bruno/Millbrea.

Okay, I doubt any of these are UK style fish and chips but man... fried fish in general is good.

And @Brainhurtboy... I think I heard of Pike Fish Fry before....

Folks, as you can tell. I love me some fish and chips, no matter what style.

Edit:

Damn it Tali... now I'm going to regret not hearing back from Cal Poly. Its so close to Morro Bay...

Edit2:

I now also recall that diner styled place on the Embacadero having some. Then one place in Monterey/Pacific Grove.

Up north in New England (an area that was at one time first populated with Puritans and other Englishmen) and is in an area where cod and other fish are plentiful it's no surprise that seafood shops aren't uncommon around here. Granted, they aren't exclusively fish n chips but they are a menu options on both seafood shops and non-seafood shops alike. Though depending on the place you may get great fish or crappy frozen crap.

Somewhat ironically the best Fish n' chips around me comes from a local grocery store chain. You can get a nice haddock and fries for about $5.

In New England and the Capital District of Upstate NY there is another phenomenon called "Fish Fry." This is a strip of fish (usually haddock, pollock or cusk) that is fried and placed on a hot dog bun. Usually it is served with chili sauce (not the same thing as that stuff from Texas but more of a relish with tomato sauce) or tartar sauce or in rare cases, catsup.

Here's the best picture I could find online of this New England/Upstate NY find:

Fish n Chip shops here don't just sell Fish n Chips btw. While popular, not everyone is a huge fan of fish. They do battered sausage, up north(primarily scotland) battered mars bar too, apple fritters, spam fritters, etc. And some expand to doing pizzas n other takeaway foods.

Well the Fish Fry places here don't have just fish; they have hamburgers and stuff too but no one really goes there for that.

But in thinking, there is one place by my parents that actually calls themselves a fish n chips restaurant. I ate there once and it was good but rather pricey.

Yeah, in San Francisco there's Fish and Chips at a ton of restaurants - depending on what kind of food they serve, of course. The nice ones, too.

Beach Chalet, the restaurant that looks over the ocean, by the windmill at Ocean Beach? Beer Battered Fish and Chips. Pretty good.

A bunch of places by my house, too, do them. Have a Pacific Catch, seafood chain, by my house that does some pretty good fish and chips.

Well, I thought they were amazing, but that was after six beers.

When I went up to Washington last week, I realized I was burnt out on Fish and Chips - been getting them too much recently (ever since I saw Dean make a status about Fish and Chips and started in on a mad craving for them), and when I got some at the restaurant/bar where my buddy works, I ended up not being able to eat all of them and feeling nauseous the whole day - and they were damn good, too!.

It was a sad thing indeed.

On the topic of Fish and Chips- I'm currently holding a 'Sausage Supper', "supper" being a chippy suffix meaning "with chips". Battered fried long sausage, with chunkified chips, and a shit-ton of good Scottish brown sauce (like HP brown sauce but waterier and with vinegar) and salt.

I had a shit shift at work, and I need a treat. Pretty nom.

if it is the thing with the god-awful brain and talking stomach advert, then no - the advert would forswear me from using that site.

Joe

edit: although coincidentally we did have a chinese meal. Deep fried duck was gorgeous but the Cantonese sauce was a bit too sweet for me.

My mum bought me some chicken thighs. Now the current thinking is to put some spices n herbs on it, bit of salt on the skin, maybe steal some of my housemates peri peri sauce (I'm not sure we still have some Reggae sauce. heck maybe Lea n Perrins might work on chicken as much as it does beef). And have it along side some chips or something.

But I'm open to ideas and recipes n such. As long as it can be done with regular kitchen materials and no breaking the bank. I've got three portions so I can experiment. Maybe do my original plan today, and your lots ideas later.

thighs make great stews/casseroles.

If anyone in your house uses honey you can make sticky sauce for them.

Whatever you do save the bones (they're freezable) and when you have them all boil them to make a tasty stock for soup.
