deanb
Only dissolve-ey if you just leave them in your mouth. They're sort of like hard marshmallow. They'll probably sell them in English food shops maybe.
TheRevanchist
I think we have something similar. They are called Circus Peanuts.
deanb
See ours don't quite taste like bananas cos they're so old that thier flavour is based on the old bananas. (Cavendish or whatever)

Mal
My chicken lentil soup doesn't taste the same with grocery store carrots and celery, primarily the carrots. This is the first time that I confirmed it after making it for years with farmer's market ones. Still good but it is missing the sweetness that I'm used to. TheRevanchist
Carrots are mainly sweet during a certain time frame of year. Learned that from a chef who cooked with them daily. But, yeah, farmer's markets generally do have better produce.
Mal
Indeed. They are usually best after a frosty winter. They can handle snow and ice easily and in doing so, they come out really sweet. Almost like candy. So if you ever grow carrots, don't pull all of them in the fall!
TheRevanchist
I ate at Norm's tonight because it was late leaving the hospital. What? You've never heard of Norms!? Well, let me tell you about Norm's. It is a landmark in Torrance. The diner scene in Pulp Fiction was filmed there. They filmed it there because the diner looks like it is stuck in the 70's. The food is great. Good service. And is about what you would pay at other diners, but with a much bigger selection of menu items. Yum!
Mal
Popcorn. I'm discovering the whole wide world of different seasonings. I always made kettle corn but never regular popcorn until last Friday during Movie Night when I made it with oil, some salt and drizzled with butter. I was surprised to find that plain popcorn wasn't really plain in flavor. So cue today where I tried adding black pepper which works. Now I think I'll be toying with the idea of other different seasonings.

Now I think I'll be toying with the idea of other different seasonings. Cumin, red pepper, nutritional yeast, garlic powder... I mean there's seriously a wide variety of spices that work. As long as they're powerdery and not flaky. Also try cooking it with different oils. Truffle oil (I use cheapo Trader Joes stuff so its not overly fancy), peanut oil, and coconut oil are awesome. A bit of truffle salt doesn't hurt, either. TJs for that as well. Edited November 18, 2014 by Faiblesse Des Sens
TheFlyingGerbil
Have any of you (probably southerners?) had boiled peanuts? They sound tempting but I need convincing to spend 4 hours boiling nuts.
TheRevanchist
We make them at home. My wife loves them. And, yes, it is a long-ass process. Boil and keep the boil going while adding more water every hour or so. The nuts are soft, almost like beans. It is worth it for her (not me). CorgiShinobi
This is going to be a strange question, but how do you guys go about lunch in your daily work life? I've gotten fed up with eating around town when it comes to work. I try to bring something from home, but I tend to make the same stuff and that gets boring. At the same time, while fast food can give you variety, it tends to be crap in the end and a few places I've straight up stop going because I've gotten sick from the food. Again, strange question but also straight forward.
Mal
There is really no way around it besides try making new things. I also typically eat out on Fridays to shake it up.
TheMightyEthan
I go home for lunch, but that doesn't really solve the "making the same thing" problem.

One thing you can do is make more than one day's worth of food so you can justify mixing it up.
Mr. GOH!
For weekday lunch, I bring a packed lunch about 50% of the time and go out to a cafe or restaurant the other 50% of the time. When I pack a lunch, I usually just pack a sandwich or two and vary the ingredients weekly, though I usually have roast chicken or turkey for the meat. We also typically have enough leftovers when we cook dinner during the week that either I or my fiancee can bring the leftovers for lunch. If I'm feeling ambitious, I will sometimes cook a massive amount of easily-stored food on Sunday and then bring that in for lunches throughout the following week. Generally, I make stuff like soups, stews, or chili with lunches in mind. Occasionally I'll do up a bunch of pasta sauce on Sunday for lunches and then I'll boil pasta in the evenings or, rarely, before work so it's fresher. I would pack in more lunches, but I don't like bringing my lunches to court when I have morning appearances, so those are the days I eat out for lunch.
TheRevanchist
... but I don't like bringing my lunches to court when I have morning appearances... I'd like to know if there is some phsychology behind a jury seeing you have a sack lunch. I'm not saying it would have an affect. However, as boring as sitting in a court room is for people who aren't working, they have time to notice little things and those register feelings and conditioned responses. I'd be interested in what kind of other things lawyers must consider when appearing in court that are tactical.
Mr. GOH!
I'm not a trial attorney, so I have no idea what jurors would think. I am fairly certain that trial attorneys who pack lunches probably keep them out of the jury's sight. I don't like bringing sack lunches to Court because I often have ingredients I want to keep refrigerated, is all. I have brought sandwich-only lunches to court in a bag in my briefcase or valise and only the security guards see it.
