FMW
Hey, big news! Dragon Quest X is a real things that's happening. All reports indicate that it's basically DQ IX-2. Same sort of single player and multiplayer systems, just with an online option now. They say that single player is a focus, and I hope that comes through. The director is the director of Nier, so at the very least the problem of faceless characters should be gone. Nier, for all it's faults, had fantastic characters. Actually, I think this might be the Dragon Quest to break into the mainstream in the west. The best part of DQ IX was the post game multiplayer, but most players outside of Japan had trouble setting up groups to experience it. If they keep that same multiplayer experience intact for this I think it'll be a hit. There is a very slick write up of all the information available so far at this link: http://www.siliconer...quest-x-so-far/

FMW
DQ 8 did ok. vgchartz.com (the best sales data available to the public) puts it at about 1.3 million sales between the US and Europe. Dragon Quest IX moved about 1.2 million units, just as a point of comparison. Everyone is going to have their own definitions of success, but for a PS2 game across the US and Europe that isn't terribly impressive. I'm sure Square-Enix was able to re-make their investment into localization, but it didn't turn a ton of profit. There's a reason they turned localization and distribution of the next entry over to Nintendo after all. It would be quite a stretch to call Dragon Quest VIII mainstream. It did ok, no more no less.
