Combat is somewhat like Kingdom Hearts where you can run around with a menu to do everything. You use the triggers to scroll to what option you want. Each familiar has their stamina so you should switch them out with L1 before they run out of it so they can rest up. The odd part to me is the timer but I guess it makes sense.

The overworld is very cool as well for the "dungeons". There are no random encounters. It really reminds me of the Tales games in this regards.

Overall, it is as I expected: A more traditional JRPG in line with Tales/KH flavor. It has a slow feeling to me.

I just realized I need to preorder this game and I want the Wizard Edition. Seems like I am out of luck since it was Namco's website exclusive until Aug 31st of last year. I'm sad. Hold me.

...

And with that, I'm heading to Gamestop to use my giftcards. Hopefully I have at least $30.

I downloaded and played the demo. I thought it looked absolutely spectacular. Gameplay didn't capture me all that much (I also came home from a night of drinking so I might have to play again). I will buy this game down the line. I have no issue paying full price, it looks so good that I have no reservations for buying this game. I'm not buying it for two reasons right now: 1) the gameplay (as I mentioned earlier) didn't sell me on it and 2) I have way too many games to play before I can even consider buying a new game that doesn't scream "BUY ME NOW" to me.

Honestly, its one of those games I will probably buy force my girlfriend (who loves Studio Ghibli) to play it while I watch.

It's a little too hand-holdy for way too long. The ending was a bit anti-climactic. One might say that the story was a bit too all-ages at times, and seemed lazy sometimes as well.

The 4-character final count seemed weird to me. It's not like you can work on different parties/combinations when grinding, it's a situation where one person is always being left behind. I really don't think it would have been too harmful to the chemistry of the game to let players switch one of the character slots out mid-combat. It's enough work managing the familiars. In my opinion, anyway.

About everything else I've got is praise. The demo had me really nervous about the combat when I played it (about which I had a draft in here that I accidentally deleted and refused to rewrite), but I wasn't sure if it just seemed that way (a combination of rough and bad) because I wasn't aware of all the mechanics. Once I played the full version though, and became acquainted with it properly, not only did I really appreciate and enjoy it, but it got pretty challenging at times. At least it was until later in the game, at which point I had already spent lots of time completing quests and grinding spots for xp and familiars. I did enjoy the story, despite its occasional eye-rollers, and it was a lot of fun getting to the end, which kind of made its forgettability even worse. There seems to be a whole lot of post-game content to dig into. I made sure to clear out everything I could before completing the story, thinking I might just quickly mop up whatever might come after it, but it was a little more than I expected, so I'm putting it off for a little bit. But yeah, good times. If you thought the game looked good from trailers, and if you enjoy a good JRPG, this will probably deliver the way you expect.

I gotten up to the place with the Sheikh of Spice (Non-important NPC) and just got the girl. It has taken about 7.5 hours which includes doing any side quest I can find. I feel like this might be a 50 hour game if you do all the side quests, which is totally cool. So far the story is fine and it is what you expect from Ghibli. The dialog is a bit humorous. Subtle curse words and stuff like what Dean posted. Combat isn't hard but there are times where I do get nervous since HP is shared between a character and his/her familiars. I don't recall if its between characters but I don't think it is.

Edit:

That genie battle is such horse shit.

I'm finally going to take this out of my backlog but to reiterated...

I USED THE PHOENIX FEATHER. I SAW IT IN USE WITH LIGHTS COMING FROM THE HEAVENS AND ALL.

But of course a move by an AI that initiate a cut will stop the revival or anything.

I can overlook all other flaws in the game but this is such bullshit.

Seems like it maybe improved on the battle controls someone, they are a bit clunky in the first game especially given the real time nature. Scrolling through a list is not always ideal.

However the world graphics look horrible, what was wrong with the painterly style of the first game. It suited it to a T.
