P4: Gritty Reboot
Herein shall we discuss climate change, drowning polar bears, melting ice caps, carbon credits, Al Gore, tidal waves, submerged coastal cities, and the like. There will also be tea and strumpets after the meeting is adjourned.
Battra92
I believe that the whole notion of "Global Warming" as described by Al Gore, Greenpeace, Communists and others is a complete load of crap. Doomsayers may raise a lot of money from well-meaning idiots but as for any debate they just make things more annoying. That said, I work for a utility company and one of our big goals in the last few years has been to increase conservation and reduce usage. It seems odd but we're so regulated by the states that it makes sense to plead to the State for an increase in rates when we encourage less use. This also allows us to then expand to more customers with less added total usage. I'm trying to find the article I read this morning but it was how American residential energy usage actually dropped for the first time ever. They gave CFLs (a horrid invention btw) most of the credit but I'd say the big part has been devices and appliances just simply becoming more energy efficient over time. Quite frankly I think the solution to tomorrow's energy problems will require a lot of different solutions (call it an all of the above approach, if you will) that will still see uses for coal, natural gas and petroleum but additional sources such as geothermal and perhaps even more localized energy generation. Quite frankly I think it would be great if more office buildings and homes could supply say half of their energy usage which would require less to be sent down the pipes. The tech isn't really there yet.
Yantelope
I love these threads. Been a while since we had one. (I can't find the popcorn one)
Mal
I have to run off soon but I will say this... polar bears aren't dumb. There has been reports of them going south and inland a bit more than they are pose to. Hell, they are even cross breeding with grizzly/brown bears. So yeah, I think the polar bears will be around, at least in spirit. Edit: Also, climate change is real. Now you guys can go at each other throats on if us humans can do such a thing and stuff. MasterDex
Battra, are you saying the arguments they make for it are bull or the whole notion of global warming is bull? Personally, I'm only sure of one thing. The climates are changing. The whiterto's and whyfor's of it all don't concern me. I'll leave that to the science guys to figure out. Yantelope
I'll also leave this here: http://www.sciencemag.org/content/254/5032/652.extract I also find the title funny. I'm pretty sure most kids learn that the sun is what warms the earth in 3rd or 4th grade.

Battra92
Battra, are you saying the arguments they make for it are bull or the whole notion of global warming is bull? The arguments and especially their "solutions" to the problem. I don't even subscribe to the notion that the temperature 100 years ago was the best temperature and climate ever. They had horrible hurricanes and floods and typhoons the same as we do. The Earth is constantly in flux. Also, P4, that Jackko image is effing creepy. Mr W Phallus
One alternate theory for climate change that my physics teacher (a doctor no less) told me about once was that we are simply using more and more energy, this energy is released from fuel where it is stored as chemical potential energy and by one way or another eventually becomes heat energy. It doesn't really matter what the fuel is, the more energy we use, the more heat we produce. I'm not really well enough versed in the laws of thermodynamics to give a detailed description of how it works but it always seemed more likely than the greenhouse gas theory to me. The point the teacher was making, however, was that there are a hundreds of theories as to the cause of global warming and none of them have substantial proof. It's ridiculous the extent to which everyone has latched onto the greenhouse theory as fact (a huge part of this is thanks to the media). I'll also leave this here: http://www.sciencema...032/652.extract I also find the title funny. I'm pretty sure most kids learn that the sun is what warms the earth in 3rd or 4th grade. Do you think they got purposefully got a Mr. Shine to comment on an article about the sun?

madbassman39
My biggest problem with the whole climate change debate is the "Global Warming" name attached. Global Warming is the wrong name, because the whole world isn't warming, the polar caps are warming and melting, which is an undeniable fact. The fresh, cold, water is moving south, making the climate near the equator more mild, and storms more severe. Its also not something new, the climate has been changing for centuries and have been recorded. Are humans causing it? Is it going to be the death of us all? Is there a way to prevent it? Is it a natural change for earth? These are questions we don't have answers to, but what we do know is that there is in fact a change in climate. Honestly energy conservation may not be the answer, but I dont understand why anybody would be against more efficient ways of using forms of energy.
