Wow... it's not even a game, just a couple of pretty cutscenes put together. Very pretty cutscenes, though, quite good use of UE.

Well, DL DVD-R costs less than 2 bucks so I guess it was worth it, but I'd never buy such game.

Better watch this game on youtube if you don't want to pirate it but want to know what it's all about.

My opinion...

 

TL;DR: Definitely rent this for the story and visuals, perhaps even own it once it's $30.

 

I'm definitely glad I'm playing this because it really is like no other game, but it still has its problems. The pacing is rather odd due to how it's set up in an "anime episode" progression. That wouldn't be bad so long as each episode wasn't that quick. I mean, if you think about it, it's like watching an anime marathon. It's a game so you want to dedicate a good amount of time to it, but all the recaps and flashbacks are not going to seem that necessary.

 

I haven't finished the game, but Asura's Wrath is an interesting mix of anime and video games. If anyone wants to follow down this path again, I would add more "video game" to the mix.

Having finished the game (89%), I'll write down my thoughts.

 

Actually, they're pretty much the same, but I would put greater emphasis on how the story is really great. If you're into anime, it's not that far off in presentation as the folks at CyberConnect2 are huge fans of manga and anime. They're the ones that do the latest Naruto fighting games for PS3 and 360.

 

Anyway, the common issue people will probably take with the game is exactly how much is interactive, and in what way. Asura's Wrath is definitely a cinematic experience for half the time, where as a quarter of it is QTE interactive and the rest is linear-based combat progression. I was initially worried that the game would become formulaic in gameplay, but it has interesting twists and turns based around the story.

 

Again, with presentation it's amazingly unique and gorgeous. The music and illustrations are all superb and contribute greatly to the atmosphere of Asian mythology and technology. I'll get into the problems though.

 

You can read my last post about the pacing. I know IGN suggested that maybe Asura's Wrath could have been a downloadable episodic game. That seems like a good idea, but there are 18 episodes along with the true 18th episode you'll need to unlock. At what rate would it be distributed, and would any of the latter episodes see success?

 

I believe naturally that you'll need to take a break as going through the whole game in one sitting, which seems possible, would actually be pretty exhausting given how much information you would have to take in and the energy spent fighting, whether through QTEs or directly. If you consider yourself a good gamer, you'll probably unlock the true 18th episode right away, but it's essentially the hardest part of the game over again. It's why I relaxed a bit before having to face the final boss again.

 

The controls work great, and I love the unique moves Asura uses on his enemies, but there is one hitch: The Burst. "Burst" will either trigger another scene, or you'll actually have to attack the enemy first before progressing. That seems confusing, but what I mean by it is that a few times when I achieved Burst, there was actually a window of time I needed to reach the enemy. Asura will automatically run towards the enemy, but if they're a boss and are still standing, they'll probably teleport away from you.

 

In the final boss battle, it took me till the 5th time to defeat the boss. Two times to familiarize myself with its moves, but the next two times I failed because the distance between me and the boss was too long. As such, the boss would move out of the way and pretty much kill me because if a Burst fails, your Burst Gauge loses a little progress which means you have to fight a little longer. Kinda a problem when a Burst can be the deciding factor between success or defeat.

 

I don't regret having purchased this game for $50, but this isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. QTEs don't exactly have a solid reputation, but to me the QTEs seem fair in Asura's Wrath. You'll have enough time to react and it doesn't mean automatic failure if you miss one. Sometimes you may have to start a sequence over, but other times your "Synchronize Rating" is lowered.

 

You have to experience the game, so definitely rent it. It could go down in price soon and I like having it in my library because of how unique it is in presentation and story. Of course, if you just want to play as an angry, angry, angry demigod, still rent.

Oh, I should also mention that once you finish the game (personally or an actual 100%), Asura's Wrath could be considered as an anime box set as you're allowed to view the game as episodes of a series. It makes a lot of sense since that's the format CyberConnect2 was aiming for.

 

EDIT: Scratch that... I double checked and it's only the interlude segments. I guess you would miss out on a few things that were player oriented too.

It bothers me that so many people are being elitist about this game. It's something bold, something new. Uncharted territory. Are the graphics good? Yes! Is the audio good? Yes! Is the story good? Yes! Is it a new IP? Yes! Is it a new spin on story/gameplay? Yes!

 

Is the value (dollars per hour of fun) great? No. But there are solutions to that. Rent it! Buy it on sale! Borrow it from a friend!

 

The decision whether or not to buy a game right away at launch should be a different decision than whether to play the game at all.

The only thing that matters is

Is the value (dollars per hour of fun) great? No.

Because this game doesn't even have a minimal replay value.

But there are solutions to that. Rent it! Buy it on sale! Borrow it from a friend!

Or just pirate it.

Yeah this game if anything is the first game thats like a tv show. The episodes are literally separated like animes [with episode synopsis before an episode]

 

 

Replay value of this would be the same if... say you want your friends to "watch" this show so you let them play it as you watch.

 

The game wouldn't have complaints, and probably would have a higher chance of a really good meta score and big sales, if it had been released for 30 or so.

So the game sold 36k across all platforms in the US, deifnitely going to be less than that here and Syndicate tanked to 34k across all platforms (which is worse cause it's on the PC as well...)

 

I'm enjoying Asura's wrath though.

The first DLC came out today on PSN, and without knowing about the following schedule, I instantly payed the $2. Thoughts afterwards...

Yeah, anyway, I sorta wish I didn't exactly pay for this considering the actual extension to the game comes out later. The current DLC, Episode 11.5, is a half-stylized, half-assed anime cutscene. I like what it's trying to depict, but there are sequences that even I could draw better. Of course, the money I used was part of my Best Buy Rewards certificate.

 

(Was hoping to save up for Mass Effect 3 epilogue, but it looks like there will be two epilogues to look forward to.)
