Kindle Fire

So Amazon revealed their tablet officially today. I have to say, at $199 its the first tablet I've actually seriously thought about getting. The 8GB with no SD card slot worries me though. I have trouble enough with the lack of space on my iPhone 8GB version.

I'm probably a lot more likely to get a Kindle Touch. Thing looks sweet

Does this belong in the game section? In the games sense, it's just another android tablet, and one limited to Amazon's app store at that.

Anyways, looks good, but I'll wait for root/CM7 and whatnot.

You'd be missing the point of this if you rooted it. It's a tablet that is designed around the kindle service. It's supposed to connect you to the amazon cloud so that you can get books, films, etc through that interface. With only 8gb storage and no external storage options, it's not really intended to function as a jack of all trades tablet.

What did I tell you before? :P

I honestly don't understand the hooplah surrounding this one. It's either an enhanced Kindle or feature-starved tablet. Basically, the Nook Color.

The big hoopla is that the Kindle and Amazon brand have much more weight than the the Nook and the price could give a nudge to other tablets (the Touchpad should have already been a giant flashing light already) Amazon also have their own content network which other companies don't have(including the entire AWS n EC2 backbone to their bidding, which even Google doesn't have for Android). It'll still have access to Amazons App Store so it's not going to be totally gimped as far as tablets go(some of the cheaper tablets, including the Nook, only tend to have what they come with, or a limited market). It's no lightweight in hardware either, it's 8GB internal and zero expansion slots it's about it's only hiccup.

It's not an ereader, but it is piggybacking off the pretty strong Kindle brand (Kindle accounts for almost as many eReaders as the iPad counts for tablets). If you're wanting a tablet, then this is 40% the price of the iPad. For many people it's a no brainer. (Oh and I wouldn't be surprised if it's selling at a loss too, with a 30% cut on apps sold in the Amazon App Store as well as ebook sales they're in a position many other tablet makers aren't)

Yeah if you don't give two shits about owning a tablet (I'm rather happy with my Netbook as it is, though since Fire is US only I don't have much choice) then it won't matter to you either way. But if folks are interested in tablets then this should give a fair bit of shaking up in the market.

Yes, I know that, I'm an Android user. Are there emulators on the Amazon store? No, there are not. I just looked up one of my faves. "They Need To Be Fed" is not on the Amazon App Store.

This is why I'm going to wait it out. I don't believe in limiting myself to one store or another.

If I'm remembering this correctly, I think Amazon said that you could side-load apps onto the Fire, without needing to root it.

Just watched the video on the Amazon web page. I was somewhat iffy on it. Sure its a cheap tablet, and it would act like one, but then after watching the video I thought how amazing it was for the price. If you decide to get amazon prime (free for students with student emails, jump on that students) for movie streaming, along with the tablet, your still only paying around 280 for a very competent tablet. A good price along with a bunch of amazing features.

I just had to deal with Amazon on returning the original Kindle Fire I got for the Mrs. back in January. Might I say, she loves that thing. And, Amazon was super easy to deal with. The set up of the new one went well. A lot of the items we bought from Amazon, including apps and books, all reloaded or prompted for reloading without any type of recharging to my card.

But, like what was said above, the memory is the only issue. But, we aren't using it for the music feature (we have iPhones for that). It's mainly for books and apps, which include some games. So, I'm not going to be concerned, since the lifespan of such tech is about 2 years, at best.

So, I'd recommend this as an ereader to anyone who doesn't have the type of cash to get the iPad.

Why would you ever think that this would happen?

I wouldn't recommend either of those for books due to the screen and battery life. Get a dedicated e-ink reader for books, then a tablet for magazines, comics, movies, and games.

And, see, I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy a real tablet for anything. Tablets are like PCs, but for soccer moms, bros, and used car salesmen.

I do like the e-ink readers, but why spend that much cash on an e-ink reader and then buy a tablet, as well? Might as well as buy the iPad to try and show up the neighbors.

Well I'm of the belief that tablets are fairly pointless and shouldn't be purchased at all. =D

Maybe as a laptop replacement for people who just use google and facebook.

See that's exactly why I want one, I have a 17" laptop which is a PITA to have balanced on my knee when I just want to flick through a couple of blogs/playing a simple game etc. while lying on the sofa watching TV, like right now my laptop screen is blocking half the TV.

I also have a 17 inch laptop. If I could go back in time I would get a smaller one, but I got what I got, and so I want a kindle fire to browse when I'm on the couch and what not.

The other reason I want the kindle fire because when I'm traveling (and I travel a lot) I can have some games or movies loaded up and watch those as I'm on an airplane/train.

I'm waiting to see if a second generation Kindle Fire comes out at the same price with some better hard ware, but we'll see if Amazon goes that route. I have a kindle e-reader, and I love it. I love the service, I love the way it works, and everything about that kindle that I love makes me want to buy a second device from Amazon. So far I have a choice between another e-reader (which I don't need) or a tablet (which I don't need, but don't have one). Along with a $200 price tag, I can't really say that's out of my price range.
