Waldorf and Statler
Actually I take that back. The Hylian Shield can only be grabbed at what is practically the end of the game. Fuck that. I might as well try and grab one more horn so I can eventually upgrade the sacred shield.
TheMightyEthan
I also didn't use the shield much because every time you use your sword you put the shield down and have to manually bring it back up.
FMW
Guys, the shield has been overpowered for a long time. Honestly, how many enemies can get around your shield if you have it up? I'm thinking of three in Windwaker, and... only two in Twilight Princess. And the shield is still just as powerful. It can block anything and even give opportunity for counterattack, only in this game you need to time it with the shield bash. To my mind, this game makes fighting in a defensive way actually interesting for once. Rather than just hold the shoulder button while you wait for the enemy to run the animation you're waiting for, you actually need to do something. You need to avoid attacks because the shields break down, and if you can't get out of the way you need to time your counter just right. And you can't just attack all the time because the enemies have electric swords now apparently. Which is 100% unacceptable.
TheMightyEthan
I actually did like the shield-bash counter mechanic quite a bit.
Waldorf and Statler
Surprisingly I've only recently started to use the shield bash [projectiles not included] I recently met my first "big motherfucker with a lance and shield" guy so I had to use the shield bash. Waldorf and Statler
Oh my god. I think my heart nearly jumped out of my throat. I was doing the desert trial. I grabbed the last seed. And two watchers caught me. I was nowhere near the point..... and and... I had like 1,000 freaking reaper/guardians after me. And by pure luck I didn't go through the sink-sand. Oh my god. I barely made it back sprinting all the way there. Never again.
TheMightyEthan
I found those trials quite peaceful when it's in sleepy-mode, but as soon as the guardians wake up it gets very stressful very quickly.
Waldorf and Statler
When those Guardians wake up... the last time I was THAT stressed out is while playing Alan Wake.
TCP
5th temple spoilers: <br>I'm in the 5th temple.... thing is, I didn't even realize I was in a temple/dungeon until I got the bow. That's never happened to me in a Zelda game before. This is awesome.
Waldorf and Statler
So I beat the game. The Hylian shield wasn't necessary as the goddess shield was more than enough. First Zelda game I beat it without it, but hey that's awesome. To be fair in OoT I used the mirror shield at the end. It looked so cool.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah in OoT I always use the mirror shield and the fire tunic at the end.
excel_excel
But then your wearing the Fire tunic in the ending cutscenes! ITS NOT RIGHT! I change back to green during the Ganon fight
TCP
Tunics are one thing this game is lacking, but I guess if you were to change Link's tunic colour, that wouldn't make sense. Post 6th Dungeon Complaints: Ok so I beat the 6th dungeon, The Fire Sanctuary, purified my sword in all three flames, than I got to the woods, and they're flooded, which is kind of cool.... then the musical notes. That was awful. But I put that behind me and moved on... only to have all my equipment stolen by moblins. Why?! Why Nintendo! Don't pad the game with this bullshit!!!!
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I thought the music notes were stupid, though I didn't actually mind the process of catching them. Totally agree though, rule #1 of any game that revolves around collecting shit: don't take away the player's shit. If it makes you feel any better though, those complaints are completely overshadowed by the awesomeness of the game. I'd forgotten all about them by the time I finished. Waldorf and Statler
Spoilers dealing with ending somewhat. I am extremely disappointed that the game pushed trailers out to emphasize how big romance was in this game, and again we didn't have much besides a mutual crush. I mean the ending implied they stay together, but still.... it's like Nintendo is too afraid to show anything bigger of romance because they're prudes
TCP
Just beat it... here are my thoughts: This is probably my second favorite 3D Zelda, after Ocarina of Time, ahead of Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and lastly Twilight Princess (I still liked it!). Though I do wish to replay Wind Waker and Twilight Princess soonish (HD on Wii U please). I did spoil the whole "Ganondorf origin story" premise for myself... so the entire game I was constantly on the lookout as to how they were going to incorporate him in it. At one point I half expected Groose to turn into Ganondorf, given the hair, thank god he didn't, that would have been terrible. I did like how they tied it in though, he was sort of Ganondorf. I felt stupid for not realizing the old lady was Impa, duh. I really hope they do a direct sequel in the vein of Majora's Mask or Phantom Hourglass (but preferably better than the latter), as this was my favorite incarnation of Link and Zelda. Though I'm still wanting another sequel to Majora's Mask (the set the game up that he was looking for Navi, then the game ended and he still hadn't found her! I need closure, dammit!) so clearly Nintendo doesn't give me what I want. But there's a lot you could buildoff with those characters. It hinted pretty strongly that they got together... maybe this is finally the opportunity to do later in life Link.
CorgiShinobi
Once tomorrow is completed, I'll finally return to Skyward Sword. Ugh, I can't believe how many times I've had to drop the game to finish assignments!
danielpholt
My girlfriend picked it up for me, i'm not allowed it before Christmas though. It's my first and only Wii game. Really looking forward to playing it. I hear its long, Perhaps too long?
TheMightyEthan
I lot of the reviews say it's longer than it needs to be, but there was very little that jumped out to me as filler.
TCP
My counter said 50 hrs but I'm pretty sure it's because I left the game paused a bunch of times while I had dinner/shoveled the driveway/etc. It's probably a 40 hours to do the mainquest and some of the sidequests. There was a little bit of filler at the very end, when you return to the forest/water area and the fire area after the 6th dungeon, you'll know what I mean. Waldorf and Statler
The whole game takes place in three areas if you want to look at it that way. There are 6 main dungeons, all taking place within these three areas [kinda how ocarina of time had a couple of dungeons in the same area as previous versions]. The other "filler stuff" also takes place in these areas. But you honestly never really notice it. You're too engrossed by the story and gameplay. For anybody who is gonna start out on the game here is some advice (it is under spoilers but doesn't give away any plot. Only item info and stuff like that) -Don't bother upgrading shields until you can buy the purple shield The other shields all have some kind of weakness that makes them worthless at the end of the day. If you HAVE to use these shields, use them with the power bash as it doesn't lower your bar. Near the end of the game you have the chance of doing this complicated shit to get the Hylian Shield, but it really isn't necessary as the fully upgraded purple shield is BEAST. - Upgrading items.... this is really up to you. There will be certain items you will never touch again once you get others [example I never used the slingshot once I got the bug]. But every other item works just fine without the upgrade. I personally only upgraded the bow. -There is a major glitch in the gameI recommend reading the spoiler online so you know how toa void it as it really is a game breaking glitch. It's once you've done the 6 dungeons. Read it then or pray to god you don't do the one thing that fucks up the glitch.
CorgiShinobi
I haven't finished the game, but I will say that at times the whole idea that everything you're doing is a pseudo-dungeon can wear on you if you don't take a break. I'm trying to finish it quick, so the whole time I feel like I'm still stuck in a temple. As far as upgrading items, it's a good thing the shield bash doesn't affect the condition of the shield. Seriously, shield bashing is an effective technique against quite a few enemies. So yeah, if you feel like all the treasure you're collecting isn't doing anything, upgrade a shield. Of course, I've upgraded everything I have, but the bags and bug net were the greatest ones so far. Actually, having the fully upgraded Beetle is pretty awesome. Waldorf and Statler
The game never really requires you to have an upgraded item which is nice. I've never been forced to have more than 10 bombs. The ONLY time I was glad I upgraded something was the bow and arrow carrying bag thing. Especially for the shit you have to do before the final two battles.
CorgiShinobi
I like having a large bomb bag because bombs can be the "screw it" option against certain enemies. A giant Yellow Chuchu? Roll a bomb right into it! A bunch of Quadro Baba? Throw a bomb! Part of me wishes there were a few specific upgrades because, to be honest, the Beetle upgrades kinda spoiled me.
TheMightyEthan
I never upgraded my bomb pouch because there were enough bomb flowers around that I could almost always refill it. I totally agree though that the "you're always in a dungeon" design gets exhausting. I couldn't play it for long stretches at a time, and that's unusual for me.
