The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Guys, the shield has been overpowered for a long time. Honestly, how many enemies can get around your shield if you have it up? I'm thinking of three in Windwaker, and... only two in Twilight Princess. And the shield is still just as powerful. It can block anything and even give opportunity for counterattack, only in this game you need to time it with the shield bash. To my mind, this game makes fighting in a defensive way actually interesting for once. Rather than just hold the shoulder button while you wait for the enemy to run the animation you're waiting for, you actually need to do something. You need to avoid attacks because the shields break down, and if you can't get out of the way you need to time your counter just right.

And you can't just attack all the time because the enemies have electric swords now apparently. Which is 100% unacceptable.

Oh my god. I think my heart nearly jumped out of my throat. I was doing the desert trial. I grabbed the last seed. And two watchers caught me. I was nowhere near the point..... and and... I had like 1,000 freaking reaper/guardians after me. And by pure luck I didn't go through the sink-sand. Oh my god. I barely made it back sprinting all the way there. Never again.

Tunics are one thing this game is lacking, but I guess if you were to change Link's tunic colour, that wouldn't make sense.

If it makes you feel any better though, those complaints are completely overshadowed by the awesomeness of the game. I'd forgotten all about them by the time I finished.

My counter said 50 hrs but I'm pretty sure it's because I left the game paused a bunch of times while I had dinner/shoveled the driveway/etc. It's probably a 40 hours to do the mainquest and some of the sidequests.

There was a little bit of filler at the very end, when you return to the forest/water area and the fire area after the 6th dungeon, you'll know what I mean.

The whole game takes place in three areas if you want to look at it that way. There are 6 main dungeons, all taking place within these three areas [kinda how ocarina of time had a couple of dungeons in the same area as previous versions]. The other "filler stuff" also takes place in these areas.

But you honestly never really notice it. You're too engrossed by the story and gameplay. For anybody who is gonna start out on the game here is some advice (it is under spoilers but doesn't give away any plot. Only item info and stuff like that)

I haven't finished the game, but I will say that at times the whole idea that everything you're doing is a pseudo-dungeon can wear on you if you don't take a break. I'm trying to finish it quick, so the whole time I feel like I'm still stuck in a temple.

As far as upgrading items, it's a good thing the shield bash doesn't affect the condition of the shield. Seriously, shield bashing is an effective technique against quite a few enemies. So yeah, if you feel like all the treasure you're collecting isn't doing anything, upgrade a shield. Of course, I've upgraded everything I have, but the bags and bug net were the greatest ones so far.

Actually, having the fully upgraded Beetle is pretty awesome.

The game never really requires you to have an upgraded item which is nice. I've never been forced to have more than 10 bombs.

The ONLY time I was glad I upgraded something was the bow and arrow carrying bag thing. Especially for the shit you have to do before the final two battles.

I like having a large bomb bag because bombs can be the "screw it" option against certain enemies.

A giant Yellow Chuchu? Roll a bomb right into it! A bunch of Quadro Baba? Throw a bomb!

Part of me wishes there were a few specific upgrades because, to be honest, the Beetle upgrades kinda spoiled me.

I never upgraded my bomb pouch because there were enough bomb flowers around that I could almost always refill it.

I totally agree though that the "you're always in a dungeon" design gets exhausting. I couldn't play it for long stretches at a time, and that's unusual for me.
