The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

I ended up just upgrading my potions and using them once I got down to 1 or 2 hearts during boss fights. The fairies were pretty useless with only giving you 6 hearts, especially near the end when I was only missing two containers.

I wouldn't have minded some armour like in Twilight Princess (sans the ruppee charging) or great fairies courage from Ocarina... but I probably only say that because I went straight from fighting whathisface to Demise without reloading potions... needless to say I died in my first attempt.

It was a great shield (Goddess), up until the Demise boss fight. If you wanted to shield bash, you needed to be spot on because five quick hits to the shield from Demise and it breaks.

At least, that's how many hits it seemed to take when all of a sudden I got the message "Your shield broke!"

Good thing I didn't say "time it perfectly!" (D'oh oh oh oh!)

But really, I agree except for Demise and his electrically charged death stick murdered my shield pretty good. It makes sense given that he's one of three enemies that does multiple swings whereas Bokoblins and even Ghirahim do one swipe of their sword.

It's not like you're receiving damage, but you might not recognize you're actually just defending yourself and thus diminishing the shield's durability.

EDIT: Looked at the boss fight again (online) and I noticed why he got the best of me. Even when you shield bash, he keeps swinging. Every single enemy in the game usually staggers or is stunned. It turns out to be the proper way of defending yourself without diminishing the shield's durability.

Then again, if you had the Hylian Shield you wouldn't have to worry about this.

EDIT2: YOU COULD CHARGE THE MASTER SWORD WITH LIGHTNING TOO?! OH THANKS FI, YOU REALLY HELPED ME OUT!

/SARCASM  (Seriously, if only I knew this my battle wouldn't have seemed so "punk" like with only jabs and backflips...)

What's the deal with Fi? I frickin' love her character, but I know I checked with her at least three times. Yet she kept telling me, "He's [description], and it doesn't look like you can use your Skyward Strike." I'm guessing after "the change," Fi must have had something after a while of that hazard striking behind me.

"Tell Me More!" would always have her give the lecture on using Analyze. Seriously, whenever I needed her in the whole game for fights, she didn't know any "information" at the time.

EDIT: I know it must seem like I'm harping on the game, but I still very much enjoyed the hell out of it. It's definitely in my Top 5 (of LoZ), but I'm not sure if it's second... or third... I'll have to play Hero Mode to see how great that part is.

This this this. It's always been that way in Zelda games though.

I finished it at last! What a game. It'll take time for it to settle and for us to see how it holds up over time. Since most of the design is in how the levels are laid out though, I suspect that it will end up being pretty timeless. Good design never goes out of date (Mario vs. Donkey Kong on the GBA Ambassador list proves that emphatically).

I didn't have any trouble figuring out the final boss fight, though I did struggle with the execution a little :) When demise went for a skyward strike of his own, I took that as my queue to follow suit. I didn't talk to Fi about him at all - actually I think only once in the game did I need her advice. It was good advice though! I didn't realize you could climb giant iron shields.

As far as the narrative goes, this game does some things I like and some things I don't.

I really like what they do with Impa. The Shekiah clan deserves to be a franchise mainstay like the triforce and the Master Sword. I really like what they do with the Master Sword. It's always been a big symbolic thing, but now there's a narrative and a back story to it. There's a reason to care about the master sword now.

Demise, on the other hand, I wish they had done something different with. He looks cool, and the boss fight is fun. And that you've been fighting the equivalent of his Fi all game is really cool. But as far as establishing a backstory to Ganon? I guess they weren't interested in doing so really - we get one text box acknowledging that there will be a cycle but nothing really beyond that. It's not BAD but... there's no substance to it.

On the other hand, if Girahim were to come back at some point in the future that would be super cool. Ganon deserves his own blade to define him, don't you think? Girahim fits the bill perfectly (and has a WONDERFUL personality to boot.

From here on out, Fi's theme (one of the better bits of music in this game) should be the theme of the Master Sword. If they sneak a remix of that in whenever I next discover the Master Sword, I'll probably tear up a little.

As far as I'm concerned, it's Grooseland. Grooseland field, Grooseland castle, and Lake Grooselia.

In Nintendo's ever changing spin on Zelda art, I hope they don't stay here. They can return to this if they want, but I hope this doesn't become the norm. That said, this game did one thing better than any predecessor, and I think that's faces. Most every NPC, even the unimportant ones, has a memorable face. I don't say this lightly, because Wind Waker had incredible faces, but I think these are even better.

I agree to some extent, but

I wish they had actually had you forge the Master Sword, rather than having you imbue even more power to an existing mystical sword. The way they did it came across to me as no more important than returning the power to restore evil to the sword in Wind Waker. Sure it's major, but it's not creating it.

Just finished the first dungeon. The sword fighting has finally clicked, and I can't get enough of using the beetle so fun and smooth to use. the 2 sword Stalfo fight was fantastic, and the boss was fairly hard.....even the dungeon itself left me a head scratching once or twice......so far so great!

Finished the 2nd dungeon, back to the sky.....just fantastic. Loved the boss fight, but the Lizalfos! So badass, so much more aggressive than any other normal enemies in the Zelda games.....so far this is one of the best Zelda's ever, love the way environments and enemies are puzzles and adventures within themselves. Full of that Nintendo magic that makes you smile and go 'woah that was cool'

I've been playing this for the last month or so and I've got over 32 hours logged. I'm currently on the second section of the "song of heroes". I really enjoy the game but all the backtracking and random collecting quests really have me losing interest. Seems like Nintendo wasn't satisfied with the padding treatment they gave Wind Waker and have really outdone themselves on this one. It's strange too because there is a ton of great stuff in here. The padding is totally unnecessary.

Also, I failed the part where you play the harp in the giant pumpkin like 5 times and finally gave up. Stupid harp.

I've just finished the third silent realm and have played about 40hrs so far. Which bits do you think are padding? I haven't felt that way about any of the thing I've had to do, in fact it doesn't feel like there has been that much I've had to do and what I have seems well built into the story, rather than breaking the flow of the story until it's done.

And, yeah that pumpkin patch harp gig was pretty harsh, because it isn't (as far as I can tell) a predictable pattern, though I did find it easier to follow the guy on the left. The time I managed to complete it I didn't really feel I did any better than the times I failed and the singer wasn't that impressed either! I'll have to give it another try an see if there is a knack to it.

The parts that feel like padding are when you have to go down and fetch the pinwheel or when you have to go back and get the basin to pour water on the frog to enter the temple. There's no reason why I should have to go do these fetch quests, it's just pointless backtracking. The silent realms are also kind of dumb. You wander around the same area you've alredy wandered all over a few times only you don't use any equpment or fight anyone. The "stealth" portion though, finding the fire dragon, is probably the first time in the game that I actually thought "arg, I don't want to do this".

I'd like to put an * on my rants. I think a lot of my tired grumpy gamer speech is based on my being old and not having tons of time to play games. It's seriously taken me the better part of 2 months to put in 32 hours to this game and I've got other games like Batman that I'm ready to move on and play. That's probably why I'm so annoyed by padding.
