On both the front that Apple could change how the console market works, and also that they're douchebags with their closed systems. (not that it's much different to consoles currently mind) They already have Apple TV running iOS, so it's not much of a leap. Being apple though it's not like it'll necessarily change it for the better. (And yes I'm aware of the Pippin, it's not exactly a product of 'new' Apple though)
Yantelope
Steve Jobs was the one that hated gaming too so now that he's out of the picture they could move that way.

Thursday Next
Check out Firemint's Real Racer 2. 4 player split screen racing. Each iDevice is a controller, routed through AppleTV to your tellybox. I'd embed, but I can't be arsed to learn how. Oh... it auto embeds. Coolio. TheMightyEthan
lol, isn't that like a $2500 console right there? Granted it's a cool $2500 console, but still...
Yantelope
Steve Jobs hated gaming? Yeah, I think he was quoted somewhere as saying that videogames were a waste of time.
deanb
Yeah that's not cheap, then again if it's including stuff like phones you'd have anyway it's not really a major cost. It is however very neat.
Yantelope
Psh, you can't put a price on Apple tech. Well, you can, but the actual price is always moot.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, but not everyone has an iPhone. Of the people I interact with on at least a semi-frequent basis 0 have iPhones, 1 has an iPad, and 0 have Apple TVs, so... *Edit* - and the one who has an iPad is my grandma, and something tells me she wouldn't be especially interested in something like this. madbassman39
I would be inclined to disagree. I think that Apple will never appeal to the "hard core" (I hate using that term) gamer crowd. Apple devices love their simple games that don't require much in them, and in order to change those that want a great console/computer experience they have to work doubly hard to change their game image. It's not impossible, but with the Xbox having TV and going to connect with windows 8 along with the windows phone soon being able to connect to the Xbox and act as a remote, I think Microsoft has already beat Apple to the punch. Apple has to break that hurdle, which, given the adoption rate of the iphones and ipads, it won't be hard if they can convince Xbox gamers to switch to Apple gaming
Thursday Next
I certainly am not saying that you should buy an Apple TV, 3 iPhones and an iPad, but the fact is that these are items that many people have (well iPhones at least) and that they can be repurposed into a console is I think, what Gabe was driving at. CorgiShinobi
Much like Apple affects the personal computer industry, I do believe Apple can "shift" the gaming industry. Not simply consoles, but through their practices, The Big 3 will adapt and challenge what Apple brings to the table. Now, when I say "shift," I mean it in the sense that there could be an alteration. Apple is most likely not going to become a large gaming competitor, but their effect will be felt, i.e. "like Apple affects the personal computer industry." Even now with the App Store the dilemma of "content vs. price" is a larger concern. Sure most of the App Store games are time waster, but there are a few notable titles that bring a lot of entertainment for such a small price. Not much else can be theorized because Apple would first have to show a great passion for gaming other than, "Hey, your phone and music player can do this too!" Strangelove
A lot of gamers fail to realize that Apple doesn't need to steal customers away from Nintendo, ms, and Sony. They just need to get the people who don't play on consoles made by Nintendo, ms, and Sony. There are tons of nongamers just waiting to be converted. Its funny how hardcore gamers are so egotistical. These companies don't need you, you need them. If you don't buy their "dumbed down casual" game, millions of others will. If anyone can make the "average" person into a gamer, its probably Apple. While a lot of people don't game because of ignorance, just as many people don't game because what is being offered isn't catered to them. Apple can do that I think. Shit, they singlehandedly popularized digital music. And that changed the entire music industry. I only wonder what they could do with gaming. I figure none of us will probably like it. No more than cd and vinyl collectors like itunes.
Vargras
Also worth noting that Apple put a huge dent in the mobile gaming market, a market that Nintendo used to have an absolute stranglehold on. Forget about Sony entirely. I don't think they'll ever be able to compete with the likes of Apple and Nintendo at this point.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Didn't they sell like 70 million PSPs? Why do people think that this isn't a significant number again?
Strangelove
I don't think anyone has actually challenged nintendos portable consoles besides Apple. The original psp was probably the closest, but they were still severely behind. Shit is about to change big time whether we like it or not. Strangelove
The ds has sold about 150000. I love my psp, but its not even close.

Thursday Next
But still quite a large number of units, especially for a new product. I agree, PSP was a worthy challenger to the DS, and depending on how the PS VIta goes, it could even be seen as the Xbox to the Vita's 360. The fact that Sony were able to establish a solid platform in a market that Nintendo totally owned is a huge achievement. If we're going to say that the PSP did not sell well because the DS outsold it 2:1, then what does that say about the Xbox 360 and PS3 when compared to the Wii? The ratio there is more like 3:1. PS Vita can take the market in a different direction to the iDevices. There's plenty of room for the two to co-exist.

deanb
btw the price on 3DS games is absolutely shocking. It's like they looked at the App Store and went "yeah let's run in the other direction". £35 for a handheld game? Fuck that.

I think I get "better" fun out of a handheld console than I do out of an Android title. Not sure about "more" fun. Experiences on DS and PSP stay with me, gaming on Android is something to do to pass the time while waiting for a train, over the past 12 months I've probably clocked more time on my phone than my DS though. CorgiShinobi
They're practically different handhelds. The DS is a device where you play for the experience, having a deeper emotional connection to the game's plot and so forth. An iOS device is where you play in short bursts to kill boredom, yet further along the line you could technically be spending more time on small 99 cent titles because of a "rinse-repeat" design. Some of the best iOS games are simple, but go along "new challenge, same technique."
