TheMightyEthan
Except 2 things: 1) Too much input lag on the Vita (at least the way they have it set up on the PS3). 2) Hardly any games use it, and that won't change unless one is included with every console sold. deanb
From my understanding of how you use the Gamepad on Wii U you don't want the games to make use of it, just the system to allow Remote Play. I can't see the input lag between Vita and Gamepad being any different, they're both doing the same job over the same signal, but I'd have to take your word on it. Strangelove
Remote play on Vita has almost no input lag. I suppose it would depend on your internet connection.
TCP
I get almost no lag on my PS3/Vita remote play... I would imagine if PS4 was built with Vita remote play in mind, there wouldn't be any problem. My prediction: every game in the blu-ray drive / on the PS4 HD was playable with remote play. deanb
Both Remote Play and Gamepad use Wi-Fi so unless you play with a faraday cage and/or wall between you and your console it shouldn't have any affect.
TheMightyEthan
Huh, I didn't realize the Gamepad used wifi. Maybe the input latency on the Vita is being introduced somewhere in my home network then, since I've got it on the Vita but not the Gamepad (while still wifi it is at least connecting directly to the Wii U rather than using my network). Even if that's the case, it could easily be solved by putting a special "video out" wifi connection on the PS4 for the Vita to connect to directly. Yes, if they enabled remote-play at a system level that would be great, but atm with the Vita you can only do remote play if the specific game has enabled it and not a lot of them have. Luftwaffles
The gamepad uses Bluetooth, not Wifi. Edit: Nevermind, yo soy mucho stupido. Edited February 17, 2013 by Luftwaffles
TheMightyEthan
That's what I thought, but I just looked it up and it uses 802.11n. It also has NFC and infrared, but that's not how it's talking to the console. *Edit* - Here's a less Wikipedia-y source. The two sets of antenna wires go to two independent wireless controllers: one for 802.11b/g/n WiFi, the other to a dedicated 802.11n controller to handle Miracast display streaming between the Wii U and the GamePad display. *Edit 2* - Wait, I'm retarded, the "n" probably explains why it works better, my home network is g. deanb
Remote Play connects directly the the PS3 too. And there's no such thing as a "video out wifi" Remote Play at a system level is theoretically possible however since PSone titles can utilise, and since they're made before Remote Play was ever a thing it can be assumed the PS3 F/W is giving them a helping hand. I imagine it's locked game to game in order for some games that push the PS3 to not be extra strained on top. PS4 would assumedly be able to bear the brunt a bit better, especially as tech has advanced in that area too over the years. edit: No it uses Wi-Fi, bluetooth is for the Wiimotes. TheMightyEthan
And there's no such thing as a "video out wifi" It's obvious from context that I meant a dedicated wifi connection between the console and the handheld/tablet, a la Wii U. The Vita does not connect directly to the PS3, it connects to my home network, which the PS3 is also connected to, and uses that to get the signal through. TheMightyEthan
Okay, I just went and tested it with PixelJunk Shooter, and there was only the slightest bit of input latency, and at least at the beginning it was entirely playable. The latency I experienced before must have been due to the game I was playing (SotC HD). Since the selection of games that it works with is so limited I just assumed it was a limitation on the system's part because I hadn't been able to test it with anything else. It was running at a fairly low framerate, but I'm not sure which end that was on.

It wasn't obvious from context as the PS vita does connect directly manuals.playstation.net/document/gb/psvita/remoteplay/viaprivate_lan.html I'd actually figured you might have thought there was some special way of optimizing wi-fi for video. TheMightyEthan
Okay, well whatever, I'm satisfied that if the PS4 is designed with remote-play on Vita in mind it can close the performance gap between the current offering and the Wii U's. FredEffinChopin
Here is something I'm likely to be totally alone on: I love the addition of a media button, but I really was praying that I would see something with a communication button in the new controller. I'd be so much more likely to participate in voice chat if push-to-talk became the standard, and with a dedicated and well-placed button for it, the push-to-talk option could always be present without the threat of taking up valuable game inputs. I can't stand autospeak, for myself or others if we're talking about a room/group with several people in it. Between the coughing and the cursing and the barking dogs and crying babies and the rapping teenagers.... I don't know. A little order would go a long way for me. I understand that I am in the severe minority, I just want to vocalize this whopping disappointment. I was even hoping Steam might let something similar happen in BPM mode, since home+LT = screenshot in there. It wouldn't have been the most convenient thing in the world to hit home+____ for voice chat, but I'd still probably use it here and there. Waldorf and Statler
Everytme a developer adds a push-to-talk button they tend to add an option to remove it somewhere and most do. People don't want yet another button to push. I get your desire to not have to deal with the stupid shit but options to lower those exist. Mute and lowering the volume being two. Sony has the upperhand right now over MS. All they need to do right now to absolutely obliterate them [at least for me] is to NOT announce a Used-game preventing mechanism and to not have some mechanism in it to fuck with gamers. Saturnine Tenshi
I dunno. I prefer push-to-talk.
Waldorf and Statler
A survey needs to be made but I'm gonna take a stab in the dark here and say most don't. 2 more days. The console has been all but confirmed now. They won't announce pricing for a while I'm assuming. Heck it'll probably be announced after the nextbox. I would estimate it'll be 400-500. TCP
For what it's worth, games with push to talk are great. Not so much for the other people, but I like being able to keep my mic turned off 95% of the time but be able to turn it on the odd time I need to say something. TCP Official Outlandish Predictions:1) They won't announce price (but when they do: 399)2) They won't announce date (except for Fall 2013) (but when they do, two weeks before Xbox) 3) Games will be shown, but not playable 4) All games streamable to the Vita 5) It WILL be backwards compatible 6) Vita price drop will be announced 7) More Vita connectivity fun for PS4 8) It will NOT be called the PlayStation Four 9) The Last Guardian and/or Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be announced as a PS4 game 10) I'll have a nerd freakout panic attack due to excitement
deanb
Going off the rumoured specs, the EA comments on lackof BC and the purchase of Gaikai I'm beginning to think that B/C is only going to be via streaming or keeping hold of your PS3. Which means your disc games won't work with PS4, could be a silly move but I mentioned aaaggggeeeessss back that I think it's stupid people would offload their old console so quick anyway. I can see it becoming a potential sticking point for people. I wonder if PS4 will be as open to homebrew as previous consoles or if the abuse of Linux in PS3 pretty much burned Sony on all that business. Hope not, now is the time to strike on strong homebrew and indie development.
TCP
BC would be nice if only for freeing up an HDMI input on my TV and removing some clutter behind my TV (well, I guess, since I'll be adding a system in, it would prevent clutter from increasing). I otherwise have no problem keeping my PS3 around.
CorgiShinobi
This "push-to-talk" stuff reminds me how I have a mic button for my headset, so I guess whatever a game features for voice chat doesn't bother me too much. Knowing Sony, they'll want people to keep playing the PS3 for a bit longer, even with a PS4 out. I imagine though that the console will be as closed as Sony would like the PS3 to be, if not more if some of the rumors are true.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Considering the architecture of cell and the rumored chip that's going to be in it I think streaming BC makes a whole lot of sense
