Playstation 4

That's sexy.
I just hope the boxart is consistent. My shelf looks weird with most of my PS3 games having the later logo on the side, but every once in awhile you run into an Assassins Creed, MGS4, or Valkyria Chronicles with the old logo. They just looks out of place:

You didn't buy many games early on. ;)

Anyways, I've always thought the later PS3 boxart was an improvement. Trends can change pretty fast so we'll see how it ends up this time around. Especially if we get longer console lives due to games being augmented by cloud computing.

Agreed! If only they started with that boxart...

All sort of a moot point as I'll likely be doing what I've done on Vita and buying almost all my games digitally.

Sony, plan this shit well. You coming in and saying "You know that used game bullshit a certain competitor of ours has? We don't have that. We believe in traditions. And gamers!"

And you'll get so many god damn blowies. Do otherwise and while the PS4 will most likely still have a lead it won't be a landslide one.

I'd be surprised if only one next-gen console has used games restrictions. Seems like it's more about servicing the third-party publishers, and if they're cool with Sony not restricting used, why would MS go through all the time and money to make their platform less desirable?

Then again, MS may be greedy idiots.

See discussion about telecoms in the Xbone thread.

Also, it sounds like Sony was planning to have restrictions but now is waffling.  Maybe they've decided that the good will they'd gain from the third-party pubs isn't worth the bad will from the fans?

That's what I'm getting as well. What will publishers do if Sony doesn't have used game DRM? Let's be honest here. Outside of hardcore fanboys and regular folk who think Kinect is coolio, if Sony releases a console with no used game drm a LOT of gamers willbe going there. These publishers can't just decide to not sell games on the PS.

Plus install base.  Publishers will go where the consumers are, regardless of whether they like the design or not.  Assuming that having no used game DRM makes more people buy a lot more PS4's than Xbones (which may not be a good assumption, but anyway) then the publishers are going to make games for PS4, no matter how distasteful that may seem to them.

It's potentially one of those chicken or egg scenarios.  People buy the console that has better games, but people make games for the console people buy.  In theory, could publishers not gravitate toward the Xbox in its early days in order push people toward buying it, despite its many, MANY problems?

I guess what I'm saying is I'm not sure how strong the average gamer's willpower is.

Yes, but the same thing could happen in reverse: gamers could buy more PS4's near the beginning, drawing more publishers to it.  I doubt most publishers are going to, as a group, cancel the games they already have well into production for the PS4, so it's the games in the earlier stages of development that could be at risk, and by the time we get there PS4's lead might be big enough to draw the pubs in anyway.
