Playstation 4

So jealous of Ethan. Tomorrow morning can't come soon enough. I was tempted for a bit tonight to go to the midnight launch but it's snowing outside, so fuck that.

No, most definitely Team Nirvana, just rolling my eyes at the cheeseball Nirvana cover in a trailer for a game set in Seattle (but not in 1991, apparently).

DO folks think SS will be any good? I've only played about 60% of the way through the first inFamous, but got very bored with it.

Yeah, I don't understand why Sony just doesn't pay to get a real Nirvana song. If they can't afford it then maybe drop the whole Nirvana thing, it is 20 years later.
Amongst the PlayStation faithful, I think general consensus is Second Son is the most anticipated exclusive.

Alright, EXTREMELY preliminary thoughts I jotted down while unpacking it:

R1 & L1 are a little awkward to get to, but the rest of the controller is fantastic.  The sticks especially feel MUCH better than the DS3.

The supposed wobble issue is just people looking for problems.  You have to press pretty hard on the corner to get it to move, and I can't really see how that would be an issue during normal use.

I like the power light strip on top of the console, very cool and futuristic looking.

I like how far apart the USB ports are.  My USB stick is kind of wide and there's still plenty of room for both it and the DS4 charge cable to be plugged in next to each other.

The shape of the console is definitely much more attractive in person.  Still wish it weren't so long and narrow, but the length is hidden where I have it so it's not really an issue.

OMG the d-pad is amazing.  The edges of the DS3's d-pad would sometimes hurt my thumb after a while, but the indentation in the middle of this one cradles it perfectly.

The on-screen keyboard has no indication of what the backspace button is.  I knew it was X just because I've used the PS3 enough, but it's still odd.

Can't sign into PSN, so I guess that's it for the night.  I was going to post a direct screen capture, but I guess a camera phone shot will have to do.

And now I'm off to bed.

*Edit* - One more thing: make sure to go manually set your color range to Full if your device supports it.  Mine was incorrectly auto-detecting Limited, and when I manually changed it all the colors got much more vivid.

Yeah, it was probably a villain. When I realized it wasn't TLoU and it wasn't Drake I was hoping for a new IP.

Could be Sir Francis Drake or someone Drake betrayed. If they go this route, I feel it would be a nice "reboot" of sorts. It could get me into the PS4, especially so if the slight hope of MGSV and FFVX coming to the PC are sqaushed. Not to mention Kingdom Hearts 3 will eventually show up. Four games with my kind of scheduel is a good start for about the first year.

Not only does Seattle not care about Nirvana this is a game set in the near future anyways so they'd really not care however many years ahead it is.

So here's my initial impressions.  I've only played about two hours of Killzone so far so I'm going to be talking about the system and UI itself.

First, it's fast.  Really fast.  Pulling up the UI and navigating it is pretty much instantaneous.  Tapping the PS button once will suspend your game and take you to the home menu.  Tapping it twice will switch between the last two screens you were on, so you could easily switch between a game and, say, your friends list for example.  Also, while I actually liked the XMB, I still think this is a better interface.  It confused me in screenshots but once you actually play around with it for yourself it's very intuitive.  The main bar is full of tiles to represent your most recent games.  You can also access your video apps (netflix, hulu), streaming channels, and the "library" tile, which is basically a list of all your games.  If you hit up on the d-pad you go to a second row of icons that is similar to the XMB from the ps3, but organized differently.  This is where you go to see your friends, notifications, settings, and so on.

As for the streaming, I haven't done any myself but the "Live from Playstation" tile on the main menu is where you go to watch it.  The channels are divided into separate sections for Twitch and Ustream.  I looked at a few channels, and while the video quality varied depending on the streamer, every broadcast loaded in just a couple of seconds, which is a lot faster than I was expecting.  I didn't have enough time to really experiment with sharing but I think it might actually end up being a popular feature.  It seems quite simple and painless to use.

On a minor note, you can now type on the on-screen keyboard with the accelerometer,  It doesn't sound like much but it saves a LOT of time compared to the d-pad.

Oh yeah, the PSN store has its own dedicated icon on the XMB 2.0 and the shop is now integrated right into the system, and thank god for that because waiting for the store to load on the ps3 could be a real pain in the ass.

What how are L1 and R1 a little awkward to get to? What weird way are you holding your controller?

Like a normal person.  I realized that it was actually just that I was reaching for all the buttons as a test rather than actually using the controller, so I was trying to touch them with the first joint of my finger like I would the trigger, but in actual gameplay I hit it with a different part of my finger and it's not awkward at all.

*Edit* - Has anyone been able to sign in to PSN yet?

Got signed in.

Holy shit going between the store and the dash is fast and amazing.  It takes 0 seconds, instead of the 15 minutes the PS3 takes.

*Edit* - lol, I was signed in for all of 90 seconds and now it's telling me PSN is undergoing maintenance.  Was able to start downloads on my PS+ games though.
