Saturnine Tenshi
It's too bad. Since DirectX is shit. |: @Faiblesse: Reminded me of this. Edited October 28, 2011 by Saturnine Tenshi
Yantelope V2
now foxnews is getting in on the rumors http://www.foxnews.c...intcmp=features some very juicy rumors in here: "The console reportedly contains better graphics and a resolution better than most high-definition TV sets, with users able to play 3D games in full HD." TheMightyEthan
At first I was like "meh, it can render in 2k, who has a 2k tv?" but then I realized that would allow 2x MSAA on a 1080p TV, and MSAA is quite a bit better than FSAA (standard antialiasing), so that's kinda cool. Yantelope V2
Nobody will ever use that though because the performance impact is to harsh. I think PC games are showing that FXAA is actually the future. It works extremely well in BF3. The only downside is that FXAA is an Nvidia technology as I recall so MS or Sony goes ATI then it will be off the table. I think ATI has a competing tech which isn't quite as good. TheMightyEthan
FXAA worked quite nicely in Skyrim too. But yeah, the only games where we might see MSAA would be ones that aren't terribly taxing on the system to begin with.
deanb
Yeah I'm sure I've already said this before but I'm calling em bunk. 4K is pretty much pointless. At least when the HD consoles came out (And they weren't really even HD, only the 2D games tend to be hitting 1080p, most 3D higher-end games hover around the 720p mark), there was a fair few folks with HDTVs. But folks with 4K TVs? Cinemas and folks with personal cinemas in the left wing of their mansion. 4K is exceedingly niche and I don't see it picking up in the next few years. Folks are still moving on to HDTVs. 1080p makes much more sense, able to easily hit it, support most of the TVs out already, and means 3D should be piss easy (which hitting 3DTVs is much more likely than aiming for 4K TVs, at least 3DTVs are out n about and building a userbase) Just as an example of the huge increase it'd be calling for. Last gen was SD, so pumping out a comfortable 0.3megapixel. This gen as mentioned hovers around 720p, just shy of 1megapixel. 4K is just shy of 9megapixels. (1080p is 2megapixels, with 3D being twice that). Another issue is Sony are still selling Blu-Rays, a film format that caps out at 1080p. That'd look terrible on 4K screens. As bad as SD does on a HD screen now. As for the "no used games" thing we already discussed that many times already. Oh n then the X64 CPU which...well that's a PC CPU. It'd be a bit of a drop from their current 7-core Cell BB beast in the PS3. Especially with rumours it's an AMD CPU. They're not exactly...well AMD CPUs are shit and haven't really been that great since the Athalon X2. Then again I could have saved some time and said: It's a rumour from Kotaku. The guys that had a photo from the FCC of a 3DS and still messed up how it would look and the features it had. I've a feeling they just threw some buzzwords round the office that sounded impressive like "4K" and "X64" before putting much thought into what'd mean. Yantelope V2
Yeah, sorry, when I said juicy rumors I was being sarcastic. I fully expect the new consoles to push 1080p as standard and I'm crossing my fingers that they will be pushing 3D as a requirement for all their games much like HD was a requirement for the last generation. Beyond that I don't expect many crazy things. I do greatly fear social integration is going to be a big part of it and frankly I don't want Facebook posting everything I'm playing and I don't care to tweet that I just finished Halo 5. deanb
You know if you don't have a FB or Twitter account it can't tweet right? And both of them require giving said app permission to do that anyway. Though personally I think it's great. I kinda like folks making screencaps and videos and such and sharing them. Something I hope is possible with next-gen consoles. At the very least it'll stop the whole "here's a fuzzy off-kilter photo of my TV, and no I didn't compensate for the refresh rate" stuff. Faiblesse Des Sens
Both require permission on both ends. Why bitch about something optional?
Yantelope V2
Yeah, it's mostly my grumpy old man side but many times I just want to be left alone to play games. In a way that's maybe why I don't like the social integration. You're right though, I can always unplug my xbox from the internets... hopefully. Uploading videos directly to youtube of your kills in MW3 is pretty awesome though.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, Youtube integration is the coolest kind of social integration to me. Also the ability to take screencaps of any app would be fantastic (the Vita does this, right?). I fully expect the new consoles to push 1080p as standard and I'm crossing my fingers that they will be pushing 3D as a requirement for all their games much like HD was a requirement for the last generation. I hadn't even considered they might require 3D, that would be pretty great.
TheFlyingGerbil
Doesn't matter if you don't give twitter/fb permissions, if your friends do you'll still be bombarded with crappy tweets/updates. That's what would annoy me about it, rather than the fact that I could post them. Having said that, if it was just posting screen shots/videos they chose to take (kind of the way people use instagram now) it would have the potential to be interesting as you say. Maybe you could choose to set it up to send a tweet/fb update when you started up multiplayer?

Doesn't matter if you don't give twitter/fb permissions, if your friends do you'll still be bombarded with crappy tweets/updates. Filter it out. People have Raptr auto-tweeting posting their days gaming stats. I don't see jack squat of it after the first tweet/status pops up. Same with.... foursquare, Giant Bomb, Youtube, Tweekly.fm, WhatPulse, Yelp, and ZiGGURAT. (And on facebook all the Farmville kinda stuff, as well as the aforementioned Raptr, oh and Horoscope stuff too)
TheFlyingGerbil
I don;t like filtering, as you end up missing some stuff you do want to see. Maybe by filtering the crappy trophy updates etc, you also miss the cool screenshots/vidoes. Plus even if you can filter out the stuff you want and leave the rest it's still an unnecessary hassle.
deanb
Well I guess it's a case of seeing how (and if) it's done, but as it currently stands trophy updates are done through one service, and posting images tends to be through services like Twitpic/imgur/yfrog etc. So filtering them out separately is rather simple. And then there's probably a friend feed of sorts on the console, hopefully on par with Steams blotter. God I hope next-gen consoles get community features on-par with Steam. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, Youtube integration is the coolest kind of social integration to me. Also the ability to take screencaps of any app would be fantastic (the Vita does this, right?). http://pressxordie.c...re-of-the-vita/ Yes. Yeah, sorry, I knew the Vita did it, I wasn't sure if it was entirely system-wide though. And this: Unfortunately, the Vita does allow developers to disable this feature if they wish. Shows that it's not 100%. I'd like it to just be a feature that devs couldn't disable... although now that I think about it maybe a limited-time disabling would be handy to avoid people posting spoilers. Maybe make it so you can't screenshot certain parts of the game before a certain amount of time after launch, like how Bungie did on their website with Halo pictures (though that didn't actually prevent you from doing it, it just blacked out the thumbnail and posted a spoiler warning across it so you had to actually click through to see the picture). deanb
As I said, any developer that blocks it is probably going to see some form of backlash. It's much akin to delaying (or just not having) review copies of your game, it's normally seen as a bad sign for your game. There's also still nothing stopping you just taking photos and throwing them up on Twitter the old fashioned way.

Thursday Next
Pretty sure that Wipeout 2048 has it disabled. Which is a shame cos that game is purrdy.
madbassman39
I read, and I don't remember where, that the PS4 was going to be able to pump out double the 1080p resolution so that 3D games could be displayed if full 1080p. Is that how 3D works?
Yantelope V2
yes and no, It's slightly more complicated than that. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20063310-1/how-3d-content-works-blu-ray-vs-broadcast/
TheMightyEthan
Good article, though it's slightly wrong about passive 3D: It's correct that passive 3D tv's alternate each row of pixels so each eye gets 1920x540. It then says that with side-by-side 720p 3D you'll be getting only 640x360 per eye (half the horizontal res for the side-by-side, half the vertical because of the alternated rows in the TV), which is incorrect. It doesn't just cut the number of vertical pixels in half, because the TV doesn't suddenly change the number of pixels it has to display with. Instead it will sample the 640x720 image to the 1920x540 display resolution, so the horizontal resolution isn't 360, it's 720 sampled to 540. deanb
Just to add here as I've done in status posts: Don't take the RAM to heart as devkits have higher RAM than the main console. I'm still wary on the whole X86 thing.
