Chronixal
I'm more excited that the streaming options are going to be vastly improved. Locked 720p and archivable is massively welcome.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, the ability to transfer the files directly to USB is fantastic.
Mr. GOH!
Maybe I'm just dense, but why is it so great that you can offload gameplay clips to a thumb drive? Is it so you can post it to the internet using services other than Twitch (and any other services built into the PS4 OS; I have no idea if you can post these clips from the console directly to YouTube or whatever)?
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, that's why, and also edit them with better software. Currently the only way to upload recorded clips is Facebook, which means that if you want to post something on Youtube you have to upload it to Facebook first and then use a Facebook ripper to download that file to your computer. That would be a hassle on its own, but Facebook also compresses the videos so they look like crap after you do that. Now you'll be able to get the raw file that the PS4 generates and copy it directly onto a computer (via USB drive) to edit and upload wherever you want, without it having gone through Facebook's compression. Strangelove
Correction: you can only dim it. Fuck! I think Sony is trying to make it a "thing." Giving the option to completely turn it off would mean that a lot of people would never notice how different games use it. I think Sony wants the light to be a trademark of the DS4. It sets it apart. Personally, Id never turn it off. Its cool for stuff like Sound Shapes and Killzone SF. Id dim it though. I think most would agree it's too bright as is. TheMightyEthan
I think the idea of having it indicate your health or whatever is kind of neat, except that the way it's positioned I can't ever see it while I'm playing so it's pointless. The only game I've played that I could actually notice the changes was in Thief how it would light up bright white if you were visible, because the change was drastic enough that I could see the change in light down at the bottom edge of my vision. Thursday Next
It's not a big enough deal for me to understand the amount of bleating that goes on about it.
TheMightyEthan
It irritates me because my DS4's battery lasts /maybe/ half as long, and probably more like 1/3 as long as my DS3's, and there's no good reason for it to be there. Thursday Next
Yeah, but I don't think I've had a situation yet where I've started playing on full charge and had it die on me. (I also have two controllers so I could in theory swap if this became an issue). I guess it is testament to how little there is to moan about that DS4 light is the big moan that I keep hearing. TheMightyEthan
Really? That happened to me twice this weekend while playing Infamous. I mean, it didn't actually die, but it warned me the charge was getting low and I should plug it in.
Thursday Next
Yup. Really. Though I don't get to play in such long stints these days. In any event, my phone charger is by my bed so it would be no great shakes if I had to plug it in. Aaaaaanyway. It just doesn't bother me, and the use of light e.g. glowing red when Infamous uber power is ready (or is it a Karma thing?), or changing colour to match the spray paint you are about to tag, entertain me enough to put up with minor inconveniences like charging it every day. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I like some of the things they do with it, but like I said before its position makes it so except when it's changing to bright white I just can't see that it's changing colors. I can't see the light itself when I'm holding the controller, and only the white is bright enough to cast enough light into the room to be noticeable. I can see the light cast by the other colors when I look down, but the changes aren't drastic enough to catch my attention at the bottom edge of my vision when I'm looking at the screen, and I almost never look down while playing a game. If instead of that bar there were a little light patch or narrower strip on the front of the controller, that could be neat for the kinds of things you're talking about. Vecha
New DUALSHOCK 4 Options: New light bar settings have been added for DUALSHOCK 4, allowing you to change it to Bright, Medium or Dim in the Settings menu. The touchpad has also been updated, allowing you to navigate the on-screen keyboard using the DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad. Hell yeah.

Alex Heat
On the plus side, this should mean that media streaming and the DNLA will be the focus of the next update.
TheMightyEthan
Have they confirmed that they're even planning to add that? I'm skeptical that it will ever be done.
TCP
I don't really care about DNLA but it'd be nice if the system could play back video files. Lots of people download movies and play them back on their PS3s, it'd be nice to continue that on PS4.
TheMightyEthan
I don't think Sony has much of an interest in allowing you to do that though. They'd rather you buy the movies from their store, or at least subscribe to one of their partner services.
TCP
I don't understand that reasoning. The PS3 and the Vita can do that, why wouldn't the PS4. Let's make a bet!
TheMightyEthan
It was an experiment that they ultimately decided was unnecessary. PS4 isn't backwards compatible either.
Strangelove
2006 and 2013/2014 are very different times. Did the PS3 even have a digital store when it was released? You can look at this two ways - they want all your money so they restrict playing back video files. Or they didnt feel video playback was necessary since almost everyone who owns a console has Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime nowadays. It's just not a very requested thing. Honestly, video playback is nice, but since I had Netflix/Hulu/Amazon I never felt like I needed it. Not to mention that most people use it to watch pirated movies and tv shows. People need to own up to shit like that. I personally have never played a video file on my PS3 that I legally owned. All the video files I own are of pirated material. And porn. Seriously, unless youre a bro who does shit like stick bananas up your passed out friend's asses or youre a parent with a young kid and records all that shit, there's nothing on your computer that youre dying to see on your tv. It either goes up on Youtube or sent as an email. That being said, I pirate a lot of shit, Id like to be able to watch videos on my PS4. Gimme.
