Playstation 4

Eh, I'm half n' half on this still. Sure there's the Wall Street Journal bit, and it has been over the 5 year mark where new consoles usually show their face. There is some talk that you can see some "4" shapes/lines, but that could always be a result of whatever effects that were loaded into the small clip. Anyway, there's got to be more to this than them simply saying there's this new console. The supposed dev kits that were given out? We have to see something next-gen.

All Sony has to do is make a console that is more technologically impressive to win me over. Microsoft needs to literally BLOW ME THE FUCK AWAY to keep me with them. As I don't play nearly as many shooters as I did before they need to have something major for me to go "damn, i want that"

Well there's always that Final Fantasy XV built close to 95-05 era FFs that could woo me. I dunno, I guess not many games and potential games I'm massively looking forward to at the moment. Be interesting to see what they could bring to the table in tech/functions/features and what games that might lead to.

If I buy a PS4 it'll be for many reasons.

1. I can't afford a high-end PC to play fancy ass games.

2. Exclusives.

3. Coding is supposed to be easier so the difference between 360/PS3 games shouldn't be as big in the next-gen

4. J-RPG's and jap games in general. I'm a much bigger anime fan than I am say over military shooters.

I wonder that too.  I also wonder what effect it will have if the rumors are true and the PS4 significantly outclasses the 720.  Seems like that would make console development less attractive because you wouldn't be able to make multiplats as easy.  Either that or the PS4 version of multiplats would just be gimped by the 720's capabilities.  And depending on how far apart they are you could end up with a weird situation where you have Wii U/720 multiplats that are developed to Wii U's capabilities, and then 720/PS4 multiplats that are developed to the 720's capabilities (with each console obviously having their own exclusives as well).

@Goh: I don't think so, especially as the current rumours are the PS4 n Xbox 3 are basically just IBM-compatibles inside so porting to or ,probably likely given current next-gen titles known, from PC should be simpler than current gen.

Of course there will be a ton of exclusive first n second party titles since they need to make their new console look pretty awesome.

@TME: Most console multi-plats now are already gimped by X360 capabilities. I'd say it depends how much the Xbox 3 sells on which would become lead platform for 8th gen development (though as already said I reckon PC if current spec rumours are true)

I know, but the 360 is a lot closer to the PS3 than the rumors are suggesting the 720 and PS4 will be.

*Edit* - Also, and now it's my turn to sound like a fanboy, Halo 4 looked as good as anything I've seen on PS3.

Oh you're talking in Ghz not in architecture. As long as they're the same architecture the Ghzs n cores shouldn't matter too much. PC games already deal with a broad range of Ghz n cores.

Current gen:

PC - X86

X360 - PowerPC(tweaked with Cell components)

PS3 - Cell BE (Highly modified PowerPC)

Wii - PowerPC

Next gen:

PC - X86

Xbox 3 - X86(I think it's rumoured)

PS4 - X86 (rumoured)

Wii U - PowerPC

Ouya - ARM

OnLive/Gaikia - X86(but anything, it's virtualised)

I think it's worth mentioning the main difference is that ARM, PowerPC and it's variants are RISC, which is why these types of processors are used for things like phones and consoles. Whereas X86 used on general purpose computers, are CISC. CISC isn't great for consoles, but I've a feeling the potential use of x86 chips for 8th gen consoles is likely a response to the seemingly increasingly dominant position of PC gaming. It would allow with it an ease of porting and increase in third party support (something Sony enjoys a fair chunk of over the years up until Cell) with PC-centric/multi-plat studios.
