Mister Jack
I'm not fond of the party system either. Usually I'm fairly liberal but I'm not voting for either candidate this time around. I WAS going to vote for Obama but that whole NDAA thing and ESPECIALLY that leaked document showing that he planned to give a LOT more power to large companies really turned me off. At this point I can't say I really care who wins anymore. Fuck it. Edit: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/13/obama-trade-document-leak_n_1592593.html Found it. This is what cost Obama my vote. Battra92
Moo-Chelle Obama, is that you? Oh yeah, I TOTALLY go for whatever the president does, despite still being absolutely pissed by the unmanned drone laws. You're free to say you don't care for the health care plan passing, but I am not some sheep that simply accepts whatever the Democrats say. My arguments can't just be written off as bleeding heart liberal garbage, because I do not side with either party. The party system is SILLY. I'm simply voicing my support for many Democrat policies recently because most of them aren't insane ramblings of a generation too selfish to let anything change for the better, and who falsely believe that ANY time was better than the present. Wow, you totally missed the joke. Michelle Obama (in)famously said she wasn't proud to be an American until her husband got elected.
TheMightyEthan
I WAS going to vote for Obama but that whole NDAA thing This. I just won't be voting for a Presidential candidate this year, unless I decide to vote for a third party candidate. I have the luxury of knowing my vote for President actually makes 0 difference though, because Kansas is a winner-take-all state and Obama has no chance in hell here. Mister Jack
You might as well not even bother getting dressed to go to the polls if you support a third party candidate.

Johnny
@MDex: Technically, a true democracy would have each member of the democracy voting on every single thing. This is of course not practical, so we have representative democracy.
TheRevanchist
Here is the bad part, which we all hate to look at with this ruling by the courts: Congress now has the power to mandate what you purchase/how your money is spent beyond regular taxation. This is the core problem of this ruling. This isn't taxation anymore, or enacting laws for the benefit of the public. This is very unique to this country, as this is an entrance to the dictating of your spend. Now, depending how "coverage" is defined, a good capitalist can find a way to make bank on this. Johnny
Ehh. I'm not sure how unique this is. At least in Sweden, you're required to have insurance on your car. Then again, we all know how much some people here love Sweden.
TheMightyEthan
You're required to have car insurance here too, but the difference is you're always free to not have a car. While theoretically you're free to not live if you want, that seems like a much more significant burden to place on someone wanting to avoid the requirement.
TheMightyEthan
I also left out an important facet of the difference: Requirements that you carry car insurance are state laws, whereas this health insurance law is federal. The states have much broader powers to regulate individuals than the federal government does, so lots of things the states have the power to do the federal government doesn't.
Johnny
That difference doesn't exist in Sweden; those things are national level, not provincial.
Luftwaffles
Something I think few people realize about the US is that our two party system is actually a direct result of how our elections are structured. Look up Duverger's Law. It states that in every single-representatave plurality election (like the US has) two parties will eventually emerge. The opposite holds true as well. In proportional representation based systems like many European parliamentary systens employ multiple parties will be able to exist and thrive, even. The second point seems obvious, but I find thst the first gets glossed over far too often when talking (and complaining) about two party systems. That's why I laugh every time I see small party sob stories from groups like the Tea Party or even the Greens. The same people that thump the constitution at every chance they get don't seem to realize that the way our elections are structured is why they don't currently have seats in Congress. Of course, I'm not trying to advocate an overhaul of the US election system, nor am I trying to call Ethan or Jack out, just saying there's a reason the parties are the way they are.
TheMightyEthan
Oh yeah, I'm well aware that having individuals run for individual offices will inevitably lead to two major parties. I would love to change our system to proportional representation.
Vecha
I'm extremely mixed on the health care law. I really, really need that pre-existing clause. If I lose my current health insurance. I. Am. Fucked. With that said. Where are the hospitals going to come from? What about new doctors? etc. etc. We need infrastructure, we need teachers, we need a whole bunch of shit. I hate the Dems and Reps. We need a third party...hell make it a fourth, fifth, and six and let them all duke it out.
