Thursday Next
I guess if everyone gets to pick a race, race does become pretty meaningless which isn't a bad thing. *shrug*
TheMightyEthan
It makes me think of that Dr. Seuss story, the Sneetches.
Thursday Next
Not familiar with it. Dr. Seuss isn't much of a thing over here. Edit: Stars, bellies, sneaky dude... Got it. Edited June 17, 2015 by Thursday Next
TheMightyEthan
Basically some of the Sneetches have stars on their stomach, and some don't. The ones with the stars are "better" than the ones without. Then this guy comes with a machine that will add stars to their stomach (for a fee), so all the non-star Sneetches do it. Then the original star Sneetches say "we're still better", and use another machine made by the same guy to remove the stars from their stomachs (also for a fee), then claiming that Sneetches without stars are better. Things escalate, Sneetches keep getting stars removed and added, until eventually no one can remember who originally had stars and who didn't, and they realize it doesn't matter. Happy ending! Yay! Also the dude with the machines makes a killing on the whole fiasco.
Mister Jack
There's no such thing as a machine that will change your race, though. You can take hormones or get reassignment surgery if you're transgender, but no amount of wishful thinking will ever, EVER change your roots or where you came from, and it seems rather condescending to me for someone to act like they identify with a culture they are not really part of. I know Ethan wants to move away from the Dolezal example but it's the most prolific one right now so I'm afraid I have to use it again. Being a so-called "transracial" means denying your own parents. Any parents of any race can have a child of either gender, but two white parents will never, ever have a black child. You can't "identify" as black and reconcile yourself with that undeniable fact at the same time, which is why this woman faked having a black family. I'm sorry but that's just not mentally healthy. Nobody takes all these nerdy white kids seriously when they say that they're really japanese, so I don't know why it's even a discussion when it's a white woman who wishes she was black. Plus she's LITERALLY WEARING BLACKFACE. Why are people suddenly okay with that? If she had even a drop of black ancestry in her bloodline then I might be able to accept all this. If she was even 1/32nd black and she chose to identify with that heritage more than the 99% of her that's white then fine, whatever. But she isn't. She can have as many black friends as she wants, but she is not black, not even a little bit. To claim otherwise is...oh, what did they call it again...Oh yeah, "cultural appropriation." I thought that was supposed to be a bad thing.
TheMightyEthan
no amount of wishful thinking will ever, EVER change your roots or where you came from This is the first argument I've heard against it that doesn't strike me as arbitrary. Race, as a cultural construct, is largely based on your background, and because it's based on all this stuff that happened historically to your ancestors, not just your actual genetic makeup or the way you're treated now, it can't be changed. Interesting development.
Popular Post Mr. GOH!
I think most trans* people would say they were born trans and that the gender they adopt, though it is a social construct, is an outgrowth of their inborn trans*-ness. It is absurd to say that a white person could be born with a black soul, or vice versa, because those categories are essentially meaningless to the infant before s/he receives the social construct of race through socialization and education. In Dolezal's instance, she has the privilege to choose to appear black or white, but very, very few African-Americans can pass as white. That is, if we accept her rationalization, she is privileged to be able to choose whether she presents as white or black, while dark-skinned black folks cannot. It would be a wholly different situation if she acknowledged her privilege and merely said that she identifies with African American culture and struggles although those struggles aren't in her ancestors' or her past. madbassman39
I haven't been reading or watching any news information for about two days. I guess now people think that it's a bad idea to fly the confederate flag infront of government buildings. Why did it take this long for some one to think that was bad? I mean the flag represents a group of states that wanted to leave this country, then in the mid 20th century it was flown again to protest civil rights where it remained on government buildings. Whats more absurd is that people are upset by the thought of removing the flag.
TheMightyEthan
Lots of people have thought it was bad for a very long time, it's just now that there's enough critical mass to actually accomplish it.

Mister Jack
I hate how everyone has gotten so used to calling it "Obamacare." It's a sarcastic label invented out of bitterness that makes people forget that it's actually called the Affordable Care Act, and whether you agree with it or not affordable care is something that is desperately needed because the health care system in this country fucking sucks. I currently owe 3,000 dollars for a hospital stay of less than four hours.

Mr. GOH!
Yeah, I prefer Obamacare to the bad old regime, but I'd rather have single-payer. I'm reclaiming the term. MisterJack: were you not covered when you went to the hospital? Or did you have an expensive procedure? Or is that your deductible?

Mr. GOH!
That sucks. It should be more affordable. I'm also in favor of adopting the Minnesota solution; all health insurance companies must be non-profit.
TheRevanchist
Shit. That deductible is damn low! I remember that was the case because I went to the Covered California website to check and nearly had a coronary at that time. Now, when I check that same site, there have been some good changes! That maximum has changed and a few other things, such as insurance assistance. Obamacare has improved 10 fold. I'm glad they got the details more in check with what people can afford. Mr. GOH!
TheRevanchist: Of course it took a few years for the market to settle after the ACA went into effect, and it hasn't fully settled, yet. That it's been upheld twice should result in other improvements (or, more realistically, slower price increases from insurers). Gay marriage: this is a good day for love in the United States. The dissents in the SCOTUS opinion are full of tasty and hypocritical conservative tears. I am glad that Kennedy sees the role of SCOTUS to enforce equality and liberty under the law when the states and, indeed, the people refuse to. It will be interesting to see the many cases that will result from this ruling, such as whether anti-discrimination laws must now apply to gays and lesbians (in many states they do not) and to what extent the First Amendment 'protects' folks who do not believe in gay marriage.
