You have to go for the centre if you want to be in power. Your best bet if you want to change things is try to nudge the centre ever leftwards.

 

On another note, the DNC was one of the most unserious things ever. Like everyone looks at the UK doing their whole Black Rod thing and be like "ah, how esoteric, such pantomime" and then the US just come out with like... a concert? Rappers announcing political candidates, very strange to an onlooker indeed.

Not saying that it is wrong or anything, just as an outsider, it's a weird thing to look at. Like we have Party Conferences/conventions in the UK, but they are very different affairs. They are built around: 1) Selling the leadership to the party members (which seems to tie in with the purpose of US conventions); and 2) Selling the government policies to the voters. (Which seemed absent from the convention, or was drowned out by the entertainment aspect in international news coverage).

 

There is absolutely no entertainment element to them.
