I have a feeling the Trayvon Martin case will end up as another Duke Lacrosse media case: basically a trial by media before any facts (if any) are presented. The media is looking for a story that fits their narrative and will alter the reporting to fit what they want to hear. This is why all the pictures of Trayvon are him pretty much as a clean cut teenager and not those that were on his twitter account.

This isn't new, of course. The news media always lets the agenda set the news stories and not the other way around. It just depends on the agenda of the paper.

As for the Treyvon Martin suspensions; entirely based on being tardy. He has no history of violence or anything of the sort.

And regardless of who struck first, the fact that a fucking Neighborhood Watch person was allowed a gun speaks more about our insane gun laws than anything else. Civilians shouldn't have firearms, but more to the point, the shooter was clearly an unstable, suspicious person. As soon as the police saw the nature of his frequent calls, they should've been able to just strip his license from him and take his gun away.

Yeah, I don't think Zimmerman behaved well at all. He clearly ignored the 911 operator. That being said, there's no evidence that there's any racial motivation behind this stuff. What is crazy is that this case has been turned into a racial flashpoint. People are out protesting when there are so many other things going on in our country and government that could use a bit less voter apathy.

I also doubt it was racially motivated, but I DO think he should be reprimanded. We all make mistakes, but they still have consequences.

And putting aside whether the stand your ground law is good or not, not charging him because of it is pretty ludicrous. They should charge him and then whether or not he had a reasonable fear for his own life should be for a jury to decide.

So when will Spike Lee be charged with harassment for posting the address he thought was that of Zimmerman (it turns out it was an innocent old lady)? Probably the same time when the Black Panthers are prosecuted for offering a bounty on Zimmerman's head (soliciting kidnapping across state lines is a felony and also a crime in Florida)

I think the reaction is more about race than the actual event, even up and including the president inserting himself into the story.

Yeah... those should be prosecuted too...

So Canada has officially taken the plunge and eliminated the penny. And thus columnists across the fruited plain have brought up the "Hey, let's eliminate the penny here too."

I support the elimination of the penny and either putting Lincoln on the Dime or mixing things up a bit and changing the coins around. The dollar coin will never be accepted by the people unless forced to and quite frankly, the math has been dubious as to whether we'd actually save any money.

Interestingly enough, the US used to have a half cent until 1857 and people rarely used it for its last few decades before being tossed on the ash heap of history. According to The Inflation Calculator an 1857 half cent is worth twelve cents in 2010 money! So eliminating the penny is long overdue!
