My best bud's stepdad was exposed to Agent Orange (was sprayed while in the jungles). His body was riddled with cancer for years before he died, but he didn't place the blame on the US government. He placed blame on Dow, one of the chemical companies who made the product under direction from the US government.

That is why I find it amusing that Dow is one of the companies that has been contracted to do the cleanup.

"A lawsuit brought by a group of Vietnamese nationals against US manufacturers was dismissed in 2007." This lawsuit was against 30+ companies that were involved with Agent Orange in some way, Dow being the biggest contributor.

Now, Dow has on their website: http://www.dow.com/sustainability/debates/agentorange/ Please notice the part where it says, "The very substantial body of human evidence on Agent Orange establishes that veterans’ illnesses are not caused by Agent Orange."

Yes, Agent Orange did nothing, people. Nothing to see here. Let's move on.

If it really did nothing, then why be involved in cleaning up the mess?

/end rant

Paul Ryan is Romney's VP pick. This is the same Paul Ryan who tried to foolishly privatize social security in the 2000's. He also claims that "Ayn Rand taught me my values systems and my beliefs," which would be frightening to any Republican that knows Rand once said "Faith in God is a sign of moral weakness."

To play devil's advocate here, I took what he said to mean "actual rape" as in "if you're not lying", rather than any distinction between certain rapes being "real" rapes and others not.

That said, obviously the stuff about women not being able to get pregnant from rape is complete bullshit. But I didn't think the "legitimate rape" phrasing was anything worse than a poor choice of words that has been distorted by his opponents. I count myself among his opponents, but I still think that that particular choice of words is a stupid thing to be focusing on.

I can see what Ethan's saying. The guy's an idiot (just to clarify: the senator, not Ethan...) , but I can understand what he may have been trying to get across.

If you want the original exchange to judge for yourself:

"OK, so if an abortion could be considered in the case of, say, a tubal pregnancy or something like that. What about in the case of rape? Should it be legal or not?"

"Well, you know, people always wanna try and make that as one of those things, "Well, how do ya...slice this particularly tough sort of ethical question?" It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."
