TheMightyEthan
Yeah. Again, not defending him, I just think people are getting upset about the wrong aspect of what he said. Get mad that a member of the House Science Committee is spreading such misinformation, don't get made about one word that has a slightly ambiguous meaning. TheMightyEthan
Who are these doctors? Imaginary ones. There was a study from 1996 that found that you're about half as likely to get pregnant from rape as you are from consensual unprotected sex, but other studies have actually found that you're more likely to get pregnant from rape than consensual unprotected sex (which is counter-intuitive to say the least). A lot of the differences apparently come from how the studies defined "unprotected". Either way though it's far from impossible. This is all based on info my wife looked up last night when we were talking about this, so I don't have links to back it up.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Romney practically pleaded for Akin to step down, yet he hasn't. If a guy can't get someone FROM HIS OWN PARTY to do something as simple as step down, how the fuck does he have any leverage over any negotiation ever? Every country will just laugh at his demands. Mister Jack
What the hell is the matter with these people? Even if you're willing to forgive his comment, you should still recognize that a man who actually believes that load of made up bullshit should not be anyone's leader.
Popular Post Mal
Akin was an idiot when he said the "legitimate rape" part of which I can somewhat overlook but he went full retard with the last part. I do find it odd that almost everyone is focusing on on the "legitimate rape" part. I find it more damning that he is one of the folks trying to pass legislation regarding abortion and the like. Akin and others like him shouldn't be passing anything when they hold such piss poor knowledge about what they are trying to regulate. It seriously reminds me of the folks who tried to pass SOPA and the like. Those SOPA folks hardly knew jack on what they were trying to do. Its actually kind of scary knowing that such ill informed and ill educated folks are running the country. With that said, cut them all off who hold this damned view on rape pregnancies.
deanb
"Even if he is medically incorrect, still, that is irrelevant to the issues of life that may come before him for a vote should he be elected to the U.S. Senate," I'd say your knowledge on the matter at hand is exceedingly relevant when it comes to making life affecting votes. TheMightyEthan
Their point is that a fetus is a living person with a soul and so whether or not you can get pregnant from rape is irrelevant, you should still ban the abortions. Popular Post Luftwaffles
I think it's great to know that the last time republicans gave a shit about my welfare I was a fetus.

Mister Jack
And then they say that people without medical insurance should just be allowed to die. To be fair, though, that was the tea party, which is an organization I have so little respect for that you wouldn't be able to find it with an atomic microscope. deanb
Just to play devils advocate here, but the last time the US had a black president half of the worlds population was wiped out. There's not really a good track record going (of course that was also the last time an Irish convict was put in the Whitehouse too.)

Thursday Next
Was this a racist thing or an anti-journalist thing? Either way it's bad form, but I do wonder if s/he just wanted to call a media representative an animal and was deeply unfortunate in his choice of victim. TheMightyEthan
It also might have been directed at CNN rather than the media in general, because a lot of people on the right think CNN has a liberal bias. But knowing how some of the more extreme members of the Republican party are I'm not inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Things are getting a little chaotic at the Republic National Convention. The consensus from Ron Paul-supporting delegates is that the Convention's leaders effectively cheated them out of their positions.
