TheMightyEthan
So, the NDAA passed (the one that allows US citizens arrested within the US to be held indefinitely without trial). Obama says he's going to sign it. I now have 0 candidates for whom I could in good conscience vote next year.
P4: Gritty Reboot
Hilariously enough, Dean pointed out this White House tweet earlier. Classic. https://twitter.com/#!/whitehouse/status/147396050519457792
deanb
I also tweeted As well as https://twitter.com/...454927562752000 and https://twitter.com/...448653949304833 This SOPA hearing has been interesting. Not sure I'll be able to follow to the end, they've stated they'll be going into the night. That's early morning for me. Basically the main players are: Rep. Issa, Rep. Lofgren, Rep. "Bring in the Nerds" Chaffetz and two others I'm unsure of* (the video is really small, I can't read all names) are on the anti-SOPA side. They've being trying to push many amendments and I think ultimately aim to delay the bill in order to bring in more expert debate. They've brought up the fact it won't actually work at all (both with the existence of TOR, the fact taking DNS and searches doesn't take down the site), how it can't touch Int'l sites, it potentially weakens cyber security, and going for the prude angle with the Porn thing(porn is legal, it's also heavily pirated and SOPA would make attorney general working for porn studios) Then you have Rep Watts and Rep "I'm bored, let's just pass it" Waters. On the..I don't know what side. Obviously want to push it, but unsure if they're helping or hindering it. btw, what is "yeild"ing? *Sanchez-Lee, and what I think is Rep Brandez(Blonchez?). He's the guy who submitted "The Internet is for Porn". edit 2. He's Polis, the "internet is for porn" guy.
deanb
Fuck it. Closing the SOPA stream. I predict that all amendments put forth will be struck down, and the unamended SOPA bill will be voted in. And then a sad and terrible form of hilarity will ensue. Mal
SOPA is adjorned till 2012, if you haven't heard already. I didn't watch the stream but from what I heard from EVERYONE... its terrible. As for NDAA passing... eh. Almost makes me not want to vote. Hell, I don't want to vote for president. As for representives and senators. It will depend on a number of things like them not being absolute idiots.
deanb
Awesome news regarding SOPA. With the reaction of "I'm bored, let's just push this bill through already" I was afraid it'd just be pushed through. Then again 2012 is only a matter of weeks away, but it does provide time for folks to bulk up opposition some more. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jared_Polis - this guy alone is like. wow. He's a gay father who has founded several web start-ups. (Which also means he has a somewhat personal experience and stake) Oh and guess the representative from Silicon Valley (it's only fair to point that one out since the others are all highlighted on the left)
Mr. GOH!
What I find really promising about that graphic is that folks from both sides of the aisle are on both sides of the issue. It shows that the issues might actually matter and get a real debate instead of partisan politicking. Or it could just mean pro-SOPA interests have bought off both democrats and republicans. At least it still won't be tied up with partisan politics. Hopefully.

deanb
Zoe Lofgren, aka representative from Silicon Valley has done a reddit AMA http://www.reddit.com/r/SOPA/comments/nfhhy/member_of_house_judiciary_committee_ama_on_sopa/ If you wish to have a peruse. deanb
See, I said this happened. You can also tell this is only a couple hours in cos he's rather active (I stopped watching 6 hours in, it went on for 12). I have to say after hearing of the prudence of the US it's kind of amazing that this amendment never passed. It was I think one of the main signs that those pushing through SOPA really wanted to push it through raw.
TheMightyEthan
after hearing of the prudence of the US Can you elaborate on this? I'm not sure what you mean.
deanb
America is (considered) a prude nation. Tits = no, violence = yay. Oblivion: Kill people, murder, thieve = T for Teen. Oh no there's a mod that makes women topless = M for Mature.
TheMightyEthan
I've never heard "prudence" used with the meaning of "prude" before, but rather always "prudent". And I'd never thought America was considered prudent, hence my confusion.
deanb
Ah right. I may have fucked up a word.
Mister Jack
I think the word you were searching for is "prudishness". And I agree.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, America being known for its prudishness totally makes sense.

Mister Jack
Something is deeply wrong with Iowa when it gives the most votes to Rick Santorum, who has got to be the most alienating, unelectable candidate in the entire Republican roundup. Battra92
Something is deeply wrong with Iowa when it gives the most votes to Rick Santorum, who has got to be the most alienating, unelectable candidate in the entire Republican roundup. Four years ago Iowa gave the most votes to a man who hates his own country and his own people.
deanb
Hated them so much he ran for president. edit: http://www.livescience.com/17743-romney-santorum-tied-iowa-caucus-experts.html Didn't know it was only 8 votes apart.
