Thursday Next
Meh, I can live with that. Means I don't have to worry about getting on the housing ladder. Hopefully we'll have a rapture so that we can shed a lot of the population and that will open up more space for the rest of us. Doubly good as the remaining population will be atheistic sciencey types.
TheMightyEthan
But then we'll starve because most of the farmers will be gone. At least most of the ones in the US.

Mister Jack
Looks like right now the GOP is trying to use the fact that the health exchange website is overloaded as a sign that the entire bill was a bad idea. Clearly none of them tried to play GTA Online the day it came out. Even Jon Stewart fell into that nonsense, and he's usually smarter than that. TheMightyEthan
Clearly none of them tried to play GTA Online the day it came out. That's exactly what I said! I too was surprised John Stewart fell into that.
deanb
Actually the health site seems to be quite the technical fuck up from what I'm reading in tech circles. So not just a simple DDOS scenerio. Of ciurse that has little to do wuth the bill and largely sn issue of govt IT contracts going to the lowest bidder. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, regardless of why the website isn't working, it's a problem with implementation and not a problem with the program itself.

Saturnine Tenshi
I feel like I'm missing something in the grand scheme of things. Going to sum up what I've gathered from the situation (which could very well be wrong). 1. Debt ceiling needs to be increased. 2. Obamacare is part of this. 3. Republicans don't like that, say negative to Obamacare. 4. Obama says he'd veto. 5. Republicans freeze gov't. If that's the case, exactly how much of an impact would Obamacare be making on the US debt?
Mal
-$210 billion in the period from 2012-2021 according the the CBO. Its a contested calculation though and I'm not sure of any new numbers. Also, one week till this game of chicken is decided. Majora's Mask Final Hours will be played the the last day.
deanb
@Tenshi: Best I understand is: 1. Extremist groups of republicans want Obamacare gone. 2. Speaker Boehner would like to keep his job. 3. Republicans refuse to agree on a budget unless Obamacare (enshrined in law for a few years now) is de-funded. 4. Because of the way US funding is structured this means government has "shutdown" 5. They're now in a slinging match, both looking bad but Republicans exceedingly more so. a) The debt ceiling is about to be hit next week. b) This is slightly separate, but is also being used as a kind of ransom for the above. c) The extremist horse doctor republicans are feeling emboldened by the shutdown and are trying to push past the debt ceiling too.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, basically that.
Saturnine Tenshi
So it's less of an issue of Obamacare having a large effect on the debt ceiling than it is political agendas?
Mal
Pretty much. Some people do have legit concerns (Like perhaps ACA will come with some debt increases on the short term) but others... not so much. Honestly, this is not the time to pull this sort of crap. Healthcare reform does need to happen and it is okay if the ACA is not the first and final attempt at it. If we screw up, we can make changes. We can also work out ways to work that reform with reducing our debt and perhaps not ever reaching the ceiling. Again, more changes. But if the government and the world economy crashes, I don't think we'll have a chance at changing anything. I have my beliefs but I can be flexible... TheMightyEthan
So it's less of an issue of Obamacare having a large effect on the debt ceiling than it is political agendas? Yeah, it has basically nothing to do with the actual effects of Obamacare, it's all about the Tea Party not having the ability to actually repeal it, so they're holding the budget/debt ceiling hostage to try to force dems to de-fund it. Mister Jack
Real talk? Ted Cruz is beginning to scare the shit out of me. The closer we get to default, the more obvious he makes it that he DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HE IS TOYING WITH. He is an inmate running the asylum. deanb
Yeah, gotta say it's looking fun in the sun over here. madbassman39
I think what irritates me is that there is a group of people who have admitted to refusing to move forward with negotiations until they are happy, yet there are hundreds of people blaming the opposite party! Many times I've thought about leaving the country, some for political reasons, others because I want to try out a new place. My political affiliation tends to lean towards democrat, although I'd say I'm almost down the middle. Frankly I just would have a hard time leaving the wonderful weather California has to offer and would hate to have to rebuy my electronics. Australia would be nice, but then I would end up with shitty versions of my favorite games.
