FredEffinChopin
Not that I'm surprised at all, but it hasn't even been a full day and it seems like the people who are normally just very susceptible to a favorable spin have taken control of things and have already spun it for themselves. They don't even need to wait for the pundits to get creative anymore! Aside from the expected complaints about Dems' overreach of power and the expected threats of how this will backfire in the future are some things I didn't even quite see coming.... "Time to dust off the militia" and such. I know, they're just very vocal... Still though, that stuff scares the crap out of me. Not that I think for one second that anyone is really going to do much more than talk that way, but I'm starting to worry that that train is just picking up more passengers as it rolls along. Mr. GOH!
I'm a fan of the rule change for appointments. Hell, I'd be a fan of the rule change for legislation, too. Requiring a supermajority of fucking senators is as undemocratic as it gets. Full disclosure: one of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals nominees at issue was my professor in law school and she was phenomenal and will make a top-notch appellate judge. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I'd be totally in favor of getting rid of the filibuster altogether, no matter which party has the majority.
Mr. GOH!
Then again, I'm a dangerous radical who thinks state-based Senate seats should be scrapped and replaced by an upper house voted on by every citizen.
TheMightyEthan
Haha, so do I.
Mister Jack
I'd be willing to try just about anything at this point because the system we have now DOES NOT WORK.
TheRevanchist
It will never work as long as lawyers are involved. They like to argue about everything and generally believe that however THEY would run the show would be much better than what is currently at work, which is currently ran by lawyers. Mister Jack
Yeah! Fucking lawyers! FUCK EM! Oh, Ethan! Uh, were you there the whole time?
Mr. GOH!
John Boehner, Speaker of the House, is not a lawyer. And a lot of these guys are not really lawyers, just assholes with JDs and MBAs.

deanb
Dammit. Saw the start of it in the title and figured it might be "to begin each speech with 'his right honourable gentlemen'"
Mal
http://www.9news.com/news/article/371498/339/Pot-sales-exceed-1-million-on-first-day Two days, one million dollars. Colorado and Washington, please don't mess it up. Sales wise, I think it'll level out soon enough with a stabilization of prices. Now it depends on who the buyer wants to support. In theory the illegal dealers can undercut the legal dealers easily but the illegal dealers might have some sources that are far from kosher. Might be some random homegrower or all the way to the Mexican cartels.
Mr. GOH!
Illegal dealers will not be able to undercut legal sellers for long. Marijuana is a bulky (and therefore risky to grow, transport and store) and low-margin (at the retail level, at least) illegal drug. It's also just so much more convenient to buy from a legit store than from a dealer. The biggest pressure on prices in CO at this point is that not all areas have legal retailers and not all retailers are operational at this time. I think pot sales will remain fairly high (ha ha) for the foreseeable future.

staySICK
This is a great start, will drive out illegal dealers who aren't willing to push harder product. It should also provide a new tax revenue stream. I hope it works well enough other states follow suit. In the meantime, as someone who lives in a bordering state with friends in Denver it's making travel quite precarious. I haven't been to Denver since before the passing, but have been hearing KHP (Kansas Highway Patrol) is very vigilant near the border and attempting searches with every stop however minor hoping to catch any who try to bring spoils back home with them. I hear the other border states are doing similar.
TheRevanchist
And that will also bring in revenue to those states. Kind of a win-win for all states!
staySICK
...except it will end with more incarceration, borderline or blatant illegal stops / search and seizures, further abuses by LEOs...
TheRevanchist
The NSA has already taken your personal freedoms. Does one more personal freedom for the price of public safety matter?
Mr. GOH!
Possession of legally purchased marijuana does not threaten public safety. And it's a waste of police power.
staySICK
The NSA has already taken your personal freedoms. Does one more personal freedom for the price of public safety matter? Yes. Very much so. This type of thinking is very dangerous, just like the "if you have nothing to hide" mentality. And legally purchased weed from a shop across state lines has no bearing on public safety whatsoever.
TheRevanchist
Goh, DUIs are a matter of everyone's safety. Possession is just an additional charge to add more revenue to the state.
staySICK
Who said anything about duis? I was talking about possession.
TheRevanchist
I'm sure Kansas is racking them up like a champ. I should have clarified what I thought sooner.
