Game Devs Here?

I know some of you work for or have worked for video game companies. Wife has been experiencing some hours and practices I would consider underhanded at her present studio. Anyone care to share what they're going through(in PM) or what knowledge they have with respect to these things? I'd like to know where we stand, and what our options are.

I feel like I'm an EA spouse.

It varies hugely between departments. Some work their staff like dogs, expecting week long, round the clock coverage from people on less than £20,000 a year, other departments insist that you maintain a healthy work/life balance and will practically frog march you out the door as soon as it's home time.

It's generally the development/studio departments that fall into the former, while the publishing (finance, legal, marketing etc) are the latter. I work in legal and we definitely do not take kindly to demands to stay past office hours. After all, we're making video games here, not curing cancer. No one is going to die if a contract gets signed tomorrow instead of today. No one is going to spend the rest of their life in a prison cell because legal clocked off for the night. The worst that can happen is that a game ships a little late and profits for that quarter are bumped to the next.

Thanks for the reply, Thursday. She's currently working on a small salary at sixty hours per week with "threats" of working Saturdays if they aren't ready for gold in time. That is, of course, crunch time. Typically, I might understand. Thing is, they've been like this for the last six months. Sometimes she'll get a good week where they let her go home on time one or two days, but it's rare. Bring it up and you're fired. So many companies like Ganz, Bedlam and Silicon Knights have been laying people off in the area that there is zero job security.

Don't like it? There are one-hundred other folk out there who will put up with it for six months before coming to the same conclusion.
